Gopher FB Coach Tracy Claeys appeared on the Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave on Sunday.

Sid: started summer workouts?
TC: kids have got 2 weeks left. then 3-4 days off. start practice August 5.

Sid: what allowed to do (in summer)?
TC: running, conditioning, strength staff works with them. FB staff can spend up to 2 hours doing film and meetings. right now, we're only doing an hour. they do player-only practices - work on fundamentals, go against each other a little bit. They get an opportunity to work on things without coaches around.

Sid: advantages?
TC: keeping track of kids. see them, check in with them. we're responsible for how they act, on campus or off-campus. we see them each week, remind them to make good choices, do a good job in class. good decision by NCAA to change rules.

Dave: redshirts? (reference to QB's & Croft)
TC: last year Garry Moore redshirted. he's gotten better. if there's a QB better than Demry, we can put the redshirt year back on him.

Sid: kids in better shape?
TC: O-line put on weight, improved strength. they weren't happy with how they played. they're doing sessions on their own in weight room. with Coach miller here, great pride in that group - put in extra work this summer.

Sid: what do you know about Oregon State?
TC: Anderson was at Wisconsin. we watched film there. tried to figure out how he's going to attack us. he's added coaches who were at Utah State, so we studied Utah State Video - looked at what they've done at Oregon state. think we've got a decent idea of what they're doing.

Dave: how you doing in recruting? # of commitments?
TC: most years like to have 8-12 by start of fall practice. we won't have a full class this year - 15 to 17 range. we're happy with recruiting. close on some other kids. I'm different - don't pressure kids into making decision. we do our best. had the BBQ - let them know what a special place MN is. We want kids who want to be here. we'll get our fair share. put together class that makes us better FB team.

Sid: everybody healthy for fall?
TC: check in next week. a few kids with rehab going good. looks like everybody back for practice.

DAve: Michigan satellite recruiting? your efforts?
TC: we spend 6 weeks on road - very thorough. for us to spend another 2 weeks on road and do camps all over place - not part of our philosophy. like to be around our own kids. we did 10 or 11 events in 8 days - found 2 kids we didn't know about. I still think recruiting is about relationships. don't believe in chasing kids all over country. people say these camps are about teaching, but they're really about recruiting. if satellite camps continue, like to see a few more guidelines. that time of year is all about recruiting.

I'd have liked to hear that Demry is pressing Mitch and will be hard to keep off the field if he gets a chance...not hearing that. Is Green progressing that fast or is Croft struggling? Depends on optimism or pessimism level.

Thanks, son. Good recap. Go Gophers!

I think it's less to do with either of their development and more to do with this is Mitch's team.

The QB competition will be fun next year.

Edit: oh and thanks son!

Don't think Croft or Green will be "pressing" Mitch this year. Good old Gopherholers overestimate the backups' abilities and underestimate the abilities of the incumbent starter at QB. Always.

That's an honorable recruiting philosophy, but I don't know if it's the most effective. Seems like there's a time and place for a little pressure, even if implicit.

That wasn't my intent. All I was saying is it would be nice if Croft were exceeding expectations...not that I expect he should be able to as a sophomore. I also said it isn't clear if Green is ahead of schedule in his development curve or Croft is behind, based on comments.

Super thanks for the recap. Very much appreciated.

What is clear to me...

is that we don't have a number two quarterback ready to play. One may have to play by necessity but Tracy is not sure who it would be. That's how I read his comments.

Yes, that's how I read it as well

From what I hear, the coaches would really like to redshirt Demry, which would provide better transition and security at the position next season. The most reasonable choice to backup Mitch at that point is Conor Rhoda, since he's already redshirted, while Demry and Seth have not.

Does Rhoda have the ability to run the option game? Serious question as i have no idea on his athleticism. If not, have to believe Demry is ready to step in as a sophomore. If Rhoda can run and is more polished in his reads then maybe he's the best option for a short term fill-in this year.

Rhoda could be that fill in guy and give Demry another year to develop. If the past is any indicator Mitch will play through injury so I bet he won't miss many snaps this year.

Demry is not even close to pressing Mitch so far, and he will not be after camp either. There is about something like a 1500-2000 + play difference in their experience as a starting college QB.

Not trying to be a smartass, but if Mitch goes down the season is lost - from a pure fan's standpoint, I would prefer just punting and preserving any relevant talent through redshirting for the future. This is unfortunate for Claeys because of his contract situation, but I think it is reality. I'm definitely not an expert on our backup QBs, but from what I can tell is that Green/Croft/Williams are best suited to run the style of offense that Johnson wants, but Rhoda may be the best passer/game manager. If Mitch were to get hurt, I would probably go with Rhoda and adjust my offense a bit towards a lot of hand-offs and a simple, short passing game - although my job isn't on the line, so who knows. Stay healthy, Mitch!!!

Obviously I worded that poorly. My concern, once again, is that Demry has not distanced himself from Green despite being on campus for over a year and Green having only spring practices and looking awful.

The first part of my statement was just wishful thinking.

He sucks. ;)

Is there any chance Rhoda will be the 2017 starting QB?

Best case scenario - Mitch stays healthy & Connor Rhoda is the backup. Seth Green & Demry Croft redshirt.

Without question, the Gophers must aggressively recruit at least one high caliber QB in each class. Open competition will sort out who the better QBs are.

Williams will be the starting QB.

Despite being much a much lower ranked recruit than Green it's not outside the realm of possibility. Was there ever any talk of bringing him in as an athlete rather than QB? Big knock on him has to be his height but he looks very athletic which could offset that deficiency. Johnson's guy, so have to think he will get a fair look.

"He threw for more than 2,300 yards with 25 touchdown passes and just four interceptions as a senior, while running for another 1,200 yards and 21 scores. As a junior, he passed for 1,145 yards and 13 TDs and rushed for 542 yards and seven scores. He finished his high school career with a 24-4 record as a starter."

Talent is the great neutralizer.
