Tracy Clayes on Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave July 10th, 2016. (check out answer on facilities progress)
Sid: what are you working on?
TC: practice begins Aug 5. right now we have 8 hrs a week for conditioning, strength training. 2 hrs toward film work. staff been on a break, - get back Monday. we'll cut back on conditioning and start giving guys an hour on video.
Sid: when did you start this?
TC: two summers ago. a good thing. don't want to take away from strength and conditioning. need to be in shape when fall practice starts so you can devote more time to preparing for games.
Sid: what can you do under new rule?
TC: we can't have footballs or pads. can do footwork, change of direction. watch some video. there's a proposal to expand those things - be able to do more in summer.
Sid: starting O line (if you have to play a game right now)?
TC: just added Greene - has classwork to do. Tyler at Center. Jonah in mix - Vincent and Garrison. Maybe Connor Mayes or Jared at other spot - not sure. we have the first 14 practices of fall camp to figure out how that will work.
Sid: added another JC player?
TC: Donnell Greene 6'3", 320. only been in o-line for a year - went to JUCO as d-lineman. I like JUCOs with three years left. closer to being ready to play. year of adjustment and get two good, full years out of him. if he's not ready to start, provides depth and competition - need competition at O-line.
Dave: you've observed other schools in past - doing that this year?
TC: with change in staff a little difficult. we had Dave Aranda come up and visit. got be to friends with him during recruiting. visited with a couple teams offensively - got a couple things with them. with change in staff, working on what we're going to do. you can always learn from people - never know it all. go out and see what other people are doing.
Sid: happy with new coaches?
TC: good fits for staff. good people. kids at those positions are excited - looking forward to fall. no question we did a good job with changes.
Dave: what do you think about gadget plays?
TC: have to have them nowadays. be careful you don't have too many. need to practice them. I think we need 5 to 7 gadget plays - can't be afraid to use them early in the games - use in right situation. need to practice them so you're ready to use them.
Dave: where do you get them (gadget plays)?
TC: from different places. in fall camp - give kids a chance to draw up plays and submit them - they get them from video games and all that. make sure they're as sound as they can be - can't work against every defense. if you practice them, have to use them in games.
Sid: center position so important.
TC: Tyler needs to improve. identify who we're blocking off of. recognize D front - call out identifiers to set base blocking scheme. needs to improve on that. also something that we could take off center and put on QB a little more. if center can do that, its better. have to understand what's happening around you.
Sid: linebackers?
TC: Jack Lynn, Cody, Celestin, Jaylin Watters, Nick Rallis - Julian Huff. added Coughlin, Martin - very talented group. need to find out what they're good at. they'll hunt out the ball and be in a bad mood when they get there.
Dave: Lingen at TE?
TC: big part of the offense - smart kid. move him around a little more - get some mis-matches. expecting big things. he'll help make offense more balanced.
Sid: facilities? all I see is dirt
TC: they dig a hole, fill it in, then they dig it up again. (laughs) getting sewer and water lines in place and all that. kind of an ugly bunny right now. costs a lot of money to get that work done, but no wow factor. I've been assured there will be structures going up this fall. making progress. street in front of complex is fixed.
Sid closes by making pitch to fans to buy season tickets.
