Bright lights, brighter stars
Minnesota is off to its best 14-game start since 2015 — this is thanks to a balanced scoring effort paired with a fantastic all-around defense, one that ranks third in the country with 50.1 points allowed per game. However, one player in particular has stood out for the Gophers: freshman Tori McKinney.
McKinney is one of seven players in the country shooting 50-40-90 splits, and joins just UCLA’s Angela Dugalić as the only players to meet this threshold and have an individual defensive rating under 80. The freshman phenom also leads the conference and ranks third in the nation with a 144.1 individual offensive rating, encompassing her impact on the offensive end. Not only that, but she stepped onto the floor in Minneapolis and has immediately contributed to a winning culture at 13-1.
Besides the dominance from UCLA and USC, Minnesota has allowed the least PPG from opponents and is right there with the west coast schools in forcing bad shots. The defensive efficiency is a big reason why the Gophers are 13-1. (Credit: Gaurav Law/Her Hoop Stats contributor)
In fact, McKinney just dropped 25 in a 36-point blowout over Penn State Sunday — a team which has dropped four of its last five, including three against Power 4 opponents.
