Top 5 Candidates Lists (Be Realistic)

I don't consider some of these guys as potential candidates, only because I don't think we could get them.
-Harbaugh, I think will hold out for a top notch position.
-Patterson, turned down a deal of 2 million a few years ago. How much would it take to get this guy now? 3 ish?

So my list goes like this...
#1: Mike Belotti - I realize that he is older. However, Ferentz, M. Brown and Nick Saban etc., are all in their mid to late 50's and I don't expect these guys to be done anytime soon. I don't know why we'd expect Belotti to hang it up before being here 8ish years. I am sure he would then help us find his replacement, like he did at Oregon with Chip Kelly.

#2: Troy Calhoun

#3: Chuck Martin : This guy is a bit more of a gamble, but I am really starting to think he might make the most sense. I doubt he will be in consideration, considering that Maturi keeps talking about wanting a big name, but I think he is somewhat ideal. Martin has a ton of head coaching experience. He is a legendary Division 2 coach (winning 91% of his games at Grand Valley State and a couple nat'l championships). Additionally, he is a defensive minded coach who also is thought of as a really good recruiter with ties to the midwest. I only know that because I read that it is one of the main reasons why Brian Kelley wanted him at Notre Dame.

#4: Mike Leach : A little bit of baggage, but he did an awesome job at Texas Tech.

#5: Gus Malzahn : He sort of goes against everything I would look at (previous HC experience, etc.). But the guy has been able to build a dominant offense everywhere he has gone.

1. Calhoun-AFA- Established HC, making some waves this season. Varied background with a seemingly high class style, would bring with him an attacking style of D, probably a zone blocking motion based offense, maybe a triple option wrinkle that could be effective in small doses.
2. Venables-OU- Big name coordinator from top team, high energy, known big time recruiter, known developer of linebackers and a solid defensive mind. Just screams success to me, OU's coaching tree seems to spit out good coaches like a pez dispenser(Magino, Sumlin, Mike Stoops, Leach)
3. Belotti- ESPN- Big name, Former BCS HC, could make hay with Quies at QB, gotta think he'd be able to establish a solid base out of the athletes assembled here. Been around the block, but might be burning to get back into coaching after AD fiasco and ESPN gig.
4. Sumlin-HOU- Fact is he's built a winner at UH and has laid down pipelines in TX. He hasn't fielded top D's, but he's upset some big names and made a name for himself.
5. Major Applewhite/Josh Heupel- If you can't find an established/seasoned HC or coordinator, get yourself a top up and comer. Both these guys are bona fide future HC's, the fact they are young can be offset by a veteran coaching staff of loyal and experienced people. I for one could see a Heupel-HC/Mangino-OC combo being effective, maybe I'm way off, but these two are going to be big time coaches in the future.

Offer Gary Patterson close to 3 million, show him around the new stadium (which wasn't there during the previous hire attempt), and then watch him turn us into a Big Ten powerhouse, built on a lights-out defense.

I don't really care about the other four people on my list. This is the only guy who I think is really a can't-miss hire.

Realistic candidates

1. Golden
2. Calhoun
3. Hoke
4. Venables
5. Frazier

Don't rip me to threads, it's only my first post. I don't feel that Patterson, Peterson, or Leach would be realistic candidates. Leach, could be, but I'm not sure the U would be willing to hire him. Richt could be on the list if he becomes available but I worry about the disciplinary issues he has had at Georgia. I actually like Hoke and what he has done while at Ball State and now SDSU. He beat and his team beat Calhoun last week.

I've been saying Golden for a long time now but Hoke is really growing on me. The guy just flat out wins everywhere he has coached. My concern with him is, would he be willing to leave SDSU so quickly. W/o looking it up, if I remember correctly, this is only his second year there...third at the most.

Golden would still be my top choich though.

1. Fickell
2. Venables
3. Smart
4. Stoops (any of the six)

My top 5

;)

1) Norris Wilson - Head Coach Columbia (Neighbor of mine)
2) Scott Anderson - Third string linebacker for the U (onetime roommate)
3) Bubba Sullivan -- Pipeline to Northfield! Go Raiders!
4) Bronco Mendenhall -- Any guy named Bronko!
5) Al Golden -- Golden on Golden.
6) Audrey Jo, my daughter -- because she already is smarter than most of the others.
