Using game results since January 1, 2000, here's how I'd rate the 73 major-conference basketball programs. Surprisingly (but really only just a little), North Carolina is not #1. Though dominant since the 2004-05 season, the Tar Heels were hindered by their back-to-back non-NCAA seasons in 2001-02 & 2002-03 (thanks Matt Doherty). Top program honors go to Kansas, followed by (#2) Michigan State, (#3) Florida, (#4) Duke and then the (#5) Tar Heels.

The seven criteria used to rate the teams are: (1) average RPI rating; (2) record vs. NCAA qualifiers; (3) NCAA Tournament winning percentage; (4) NCAA Tournament appearances; (5) Final Four appearances; (6) NCAA runners-up; and (7) NCAA national championships.

Here's where the top 5 rank (among all 73 teams) for each criteria. It's pretty apparent Roy Williams has reason to be very proud of what he's accomplished at KU (with Bill Self perhaps even elevating the program) and UNC.

1. Duke (4.5)
2. Kansas (9.9)
5. Michigan State (20.6)

How long did it take to form this????

"How long did it take to form this?"

Started tracking this stuff at the New Year 2000, have just added to the numbers every season since. Get the RPI numbers & record vs. NCAA qualifiers from CollegeRPI.com, the rest is easy to track.

Excellent work.

One minor quibble though.

The 21st Century began on January 1, 2001. :) :) :)

Oops. Thanks for the correction. How about I just stick with since we hit 2000?

Just teasing..

Absolutely ! Just teasing. It always bugged me when the media jumped the gun on the turn of the century.

As usual, excellent post. I look forward to next year when the Gophers have moved on up this list! :)
