40% seemed low to me.

If it would've been all football stadiums more than 40% would've been drinking... It depends who they asked too.

Interesting study. It would be necessary to read the entire study to know what they did. It sounds like they did a cross sectional study, and compared rates of tailgating among those with a positive alcohol and those who did not, etc. They probably asked people in some random(ish) way such as every 100th person to leave a certain gate after the game. I would agree that who they asked is important. It would be interesting to know how many refusals they had for the breathalyzer test. A high refusal rate could greatly skew the data and make the results meaningless. It would also be interesting to know if only males were included in the study, if they tested minors (with parental consent), etc. My guess is that the investigator answers all of these questions and more in his write up of the study.
