Speaking with Big Ten Radio on Sirius XM, Dungy pointed to head coach PJ Fleck as a big reason why Minnesota can put together a magical couple of seasons like Clemson and rise to the top.

“I was so proud of those guys last year because as alums, we've been waiting for that for 25 years,” Dungy said. “We saw it happen at other places. We saw Northwestern go to the Rose Bowl. When I was playing, Northwestern was one of those circled wins that you always marked down. We're going to win that one. We might not win another game but were going to beat Northwestern. Suddenly they went to the Rose Bowl and Iowa was not a power franchise and they had a period of time where they were playing great football. It kind of revolved through and Minnesota never had that magical couple of years. I think coach Fleck has done a great job of getting it going. It can happen. I think that's the great thing about college football right now.

“Clemson, I visited with Dabo Swinney a lot. It was not a place where you say automatically, hey if I take this Clemson job, we’re going to be national championship contenders in three years. It wasn't looked at that way. The fact that it can happen at Clemson, the fact that it can happen at Minnesota, that makes college football great.”

2011 was the breakthrough for Swinney at Clemson. The team finished 10-4 and won the ACC, but lost in the Orange Bowl. From that season to present day, Swinney’s Tigers have won 10 or more games every season, including two national championships in three appearances over the last four seasons. Swinney’s squad under his watch was 4-3 in 2008, 9-5 in 2009 and 6-7 in 2019 before breaking through in 2011.

For Fleck, his third season in Minnesota last year was the breakthrough. The Gophers finished 11-2 and were tied for the Big Ten West title, but did not go to the conference title game based on tiebreakers. However, they were winners in the Outback Bowl.

Go Gophers!!

It would be great to be the next Clemson. Forget clemson, let's just win double digits every year. Being clemson will be tough. Florida state used to be the big game now nobody in acc challenges them. If were gonna be Clemson that means were gonna have to roll through the big ten every year. Not gonna happen. Hell, ohio state is not even clemson and were not ohio state. I really hope fleck stays and I see a trip to indy and even a rose bowl, but for us to be Clemson is a tall task.

All right! Tony jumping into the boat. Sort of kidding, but have been a little disappointed over the years that Tony hasn't been more visible as a Gopher, realizing he has another life elsewhere.

Same.

Tony seemed to have a lot going on and ... I kinda suspect just not much time for the U.

He seemed more or less professionally detached from a lot of the teams he was involved with one way or another.

I think he is more personally tied to the religious stuff he does.

Let's become the next Wisconsin first and dominate the west. We've still never won our division yet alone be in a place to be Clemson.

Tony was on the Sunday Night NFL show on NBC multiple times last year hyping the Gophs. Just saying...

Things can change, a lot of folks change focus as they get older, but as I was saying historically speaking he's been fairly detached.

The question was who could be the next Clemson. Which means is there a team/coach who could contend for national championships on a yearly basis that was not there before.

Clemson went from not winning ACC to dominating it in a short span. "Being Wisconsin" first makes no sense - beating them does. I dont want to sit at the edge of greatness for 2 decades with never sniffing a chance of a national title. I want us to become contenders in 3 - 5 years.

Fleck has proven in 3 years he deserves to be part of that conversation. Getting us there is no even close to gaurenteed. Still, if i had to put money on which team gets a national title in next 10 years I would put MN over WI if coaching stays the same

I’m just too pessimistic that geographic isolation from hotbeds is too big of a factor/bias against us.

For the same reason, I don’t believe Nebraska can ever become the next Clemson, either.

Oregon has overcome the geography problem, even though they still aren’t the “next Clemson.” There’s no reason we can’t at least be the next Oregon.

I'm glad you're not running the team (for multiple reasons, but this is just one of them). :)

Oregon is a full step below Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State in my opinion.

Other than appearing in the CFP, I don’t think Wisconsin is far off from Oregon, and I definitely think we can replace Wisconsin.

Every coach tries to win every game, as would I. But my pessimism would be the least of the reason why I would be a bad coach!

Oregon generally recruits better athletes than Wisconsin, despite not being located in a recruiting hotbed.

You’re right, and probably a good portion of them are from California, which is probably similar flight time as to MSP from Georgia.

So maybe Oregon is a great example.

Not sure I agree with Clemson though, and making 4 CFP championship games in the last five years.

Wisconsin hasn’t been close to a national title. Oregon has been a fluke play against auburn away from one (where the running back didn’t have his knee go down as he rolled over the tackler)

I think Oregon is firmly right in the middle of the top tier and the Wisconsin tier.

People saying we can be the next Clemson are underrating Clemson not overrating minnesota.

Minnesota can get in the mix for a national championship one year or two years in a medium term span.

I do think recruiting territory will limit the ability to be a contender every year.

the russel wilson year wisconsin was a Hail Mary loss away from playing in the national championship.
Iowa was close a few years back to being in the playoff.
Michigan state played in a playoff.

none of those programs are too aspirational for the gophers to match. And if you’re a heartbeat away, you could win one if things broke right

Oregon has Phil Knight and Nike behind them. That matters!

Although looking back on it now...Neither of those teams had any business being that close to the playoffs 😬.

I think the point of "Being another Clemson" means you are not a 1-shot wonder. Clemson has been a consistent contender since 2012 with two national titles. that is an 8-year run of sustained success.

So the question is whether MN can become that type of a program. Which means - at the very least - getting up to the same level of Ohio State and having a legitimate chance to win the B1G title and get a spot in the playoffs.

Like it or not, the B1G is not going to get two teams in the playoff - until or unless the playoff expands to 8 teams.

So for MN to be "another Clemson," by definition that means beating Ohio State and winning the conference on a regular basis.

Nah, I don't think wisconsin would have been in anyways. LSU was undefeated so they would have taken one spot. Alabama, Oklahoma State, and Stanford were all 1 loss teams and probably would have been put in front of wisconsin.

Wisconsin was awfully impressive the Russell Wilson year, yet they still yet again pissed away the Rose Bowl

They have lost 3 or 4 Rose Bowls in row, but never got destroyed like Iowa did in their big 2015 year.
