Tom Crean Instructs Team to Start Flopping?

Hey Crean...

Have you been on /r/collegebasketball tonight? It was all over there! Wish I would have thought of it first!

That is the greatest episode of the Chappelle show.

Excellent, but I have a tough time putting that over Clayton Bigsby, and there was a skit that I don't think was shown that was Sesame Street in the Hood that had one of the best/most inappropriate songs that I've ever heard. Don't know if I've ever laughed that hard.

There was one play where a blocking foul got called on Trevor right in front of me (I think it was Trevor, I was so excited all game the whole thing is blending into a big blur). The crowd was really upset, and Trevor had gotten there in plenty of time, but it sure looked like Trevor was falling down before the Indiana player even got there.

There was a telling of Sheehey with a sh-t eating smirk after the ref had said no call.

The charge call is almost always a "flop" and is different than a player pretending he got elbowed in the head.

People need to realize that Tom Crean is a Grade-A tool. There are many stories of him getting into it with fans while he was at Marquette. There are stories of him treating assistants very poorly. He oversigns every single year. He has been known to yell expletives at opposing players. He blows off press conferences after losses. He blows through handshakes after losses.

Last night doesn't surprise me in the least.

As disgraceful as it is, the NCAA is asking for trouble when there is no repercussion for the flop. As brilliant as it is, I'm shocked that Crean pulled it out of his bag of tricks in a relatively meaningless game for IU. As big of a win as it was for the Gophers, it shouldn't really have much of an effect on their season. I would think he would have saved it for a must-win tourney game.

I find this deplorable. There should be technicals, fines and suspensions for this type of behavior lest college basketball becomes Italian Soccer. Nip it in the bud.

You have to keep in mind, Indiana is shooting for the Big Ten title. This game may have screwed up their chances for an outright title.

I like what someone else proposed...

Apparent injuries due to elbows and such cause a stoppage of play so that they get reviewed on the spot. If the offensive player is deemed to have done something flagrant, there is a justified penalty. Conversely, if the defensive player is deemed to have *clearly* fabricated the injury, a technical foul is in order. It would have to be clear, though.

Flopping on charges already have a potential penalty.

Exactly. If your flop makes the game stop, then there should be a penalty.

Knowing that video replay was involved I doubt Crean would tell his guy to take a dive but I absolutely think he coached them to put themselves in position to get elbowed in the face and to try and draw the contact if possible. It is still unsportsmanlike and shady but not quite as blatant as telling a guy to take a dive.

I also agree whole heartedly that in the case of a replay like that where they can clearly tell the defensive player was faking it there should be a technical foul assessed because there is just no place for that crap in the game.
