"Six years later, his squad went 8-1 and was named unanimous national champions after the conclusion of the 1960 regular season. The highlight of the 1960 season was the seventh game of the year in Minneapolis against No.1-ranked Iowa. The Gophers were ranked third in the country going into the game. Minnesota won soundly 27-10 led by the two-way play of All-American guard and Outland Trophy winner, Tom Brown. The next week visiting Purdue upset Minnesota 23 -14 and the Gophers dropped from the No. 1 ranking in the country. However, in the season finale, the Gophers beat Wisconsin in Madison 26 -7 and were back on top of the polls."

I was to young to remember but reading the article on Gopherhole about the death of Murray Warmath, I found this part to be very enlightening; The Gophers victories over both Iowa and Wisc in 1960 helped us secure the national championship. It must make you feel proud to be a part of Gopher History!
Go Gophers!!

...I was to young to remember...

I'm not. I was there at Memorial Stadium with our High School Football Team in '59, '60, and '61. What some do not realize is this...Back then, the NCAA allowed only 4 or 5 offense to defense substitutions, therefore guys like Tom Brown, Offensive Line and Defensive Line, Judge Dickson, LB on defense, Sandy Stephens and Bill Munsey, defensive backs were true All-Americans. They played both ways.

And Les Bolstad be damned.

we will..... we will never see real athletes like that again. The game and players have changed. Offensive specialists, Defensive specialists. Special Teams specialists. Kicker specialists. Sorry, but I was lucky to see the REAL All-Americans. You, my friend, will never get to. And that is too bad. But it is, what it is. Therefore...

GO GOPHERS!!!

Dr. Don - I would put you in the neighborhood of 65-70 years old if you were in HS during the 59-61 seasons. Are you saying you will see another National Championship in your lifetime? I hope you get to.

You are right on, badgerman. I am 66. I will not say I will, but I will say we CAN. I saw them then, and do not know if I will see it again, I do not predict the future, but the fact is... that is what keeps me a Gopher Fan, both Football and Basketball, that we still CAN. Things people can never take away from me are those memories. I can only hope that you and other younger Fans can cherish what we older fans do. Gopherbadgerman, this is an awesome thread, and I hope other posters kick in with their memories, not what they were told, but what they actually witnessed. Remember the old Dean Martin song..."Memories Are Made of This."

I can tell you my first, and maybe best, memory was Foggie beating Michigan. Others include Tyrone Carters TD's vs Syracuse and the win at OSU by Mason...

I have much more fond memories of the BB team as well.

What is the reason that the NCAA only allowed 4 or 5 substitutions per game?

I didn't know Wisconsin had a team before Alvaraz???

That's good stuff. I didn't know the Gophers had a team after Warmath.

If I were an idiot, I would point out that you spelled Alvarez incorrectly. But since we all know who you were referring to, I am not going to do that. I will leave that juvenile stuff for Dpodd.

Why would he give a fuc& how to spell the name of some coach who never won a National Championship??? 10 yrs he'll be forgotten altogether by anyone not associated with Wisconsin.

One and two platoon football was a huge issue and created a lot of controversary and rule changes back in the history of football. College football bounced back and forth between one and two platoon for years prior to the rules changes in 1964 that allowed two platoon football, but not to the point it is today. Limited substitution was put in place where a coach could sub between periods or when the clock was stopped. It has gradually evolved to todays very specialized use of players.

Prior to 1941, it was all one platoon football which put a premium on highly skilled and conditioned athletes. Five time-outs per half were allowed. During WW2 and the Korean War, the switch was made to two platoon due to the lack of skilled players and that continued until 1954. It was OK to put in one sub between plays. That ended again in 1954 as the pendulum switched back to one platoon football due to financial concerns; costs of more scholarships, equipment, travel, etc. General Neyland at Tennessee labeled the two platoon as "chicken*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# football" which gives one an example of how contentious this was. The hard nosed critics, three yards and a cloud of dust types, of the two platoon hung around as late as the early 1970's.

Back in my "glory" days of the 60's, we seldom substituted. That was just the way the game was played. You were lucky to get a breather on a kick-off.

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt on the spelling (my bad). Just joking around.

He's the wisconsin version of pantherhawk pretty much. Honestly that is pretty sad...

The sad thing is he has claimed to have a son. Think how big of a boner that kid is if the guy he looks up to is spending his days trolling on Gopher Hole. How soon til that kid gets caught in a bath house off the freeway high off crank?

Actually today's players are far superior athletes and couldn't play both ways because the players are too good and the game is too demanding today. Sorry to break it to you, but the 2010 Gophers would slaughter the 1960 Gophers, even if they had to play both sides of the ball.

I am not so sure of this. Yes, today's players have the benefit of superior conditioning and science. But the glamor of today's sport scene hurts the modern players. A lot of these players goals are making the pro's than getting a college degree. They have rivals and the top 150 recruits of the year. Guys can grab a hat on national TV to announce were they are going to play college ball. They are treated like celebrities- sometimes the news is positive and sometimes negative.
The intangibles of growing up in the 50-60's can not be overlooked. They had to endure tougher everyday life. There was no internet, MP3 players, cell phones, and no personal computers. Not everyone owned a car and some people shared a telephone line with a neighbor. This was called a party line. Now if they lived in a rural area they were lucky to have a phone and some did not have electricity. Most of this era player had limited choices of recreational activities and so on a lot of days they played sports.
I guess what I am saying is they were a lot tougher mentally and that is the reason they could play the whole game and not need all the specialist. I would have liked to have watched them play. I did get to watch them play pro football. Guys like Eller and Bell. It would be awesome to line up this game!

His mailman said that he had a son...

If today's players had to live like players 50 years ago, they would probably quit the team the first week. In any case, I don't think it really matters too much comparing teams from different generations.

Just curious, when was the last time that MN beat both Wisconsin and Iowa in the same season?

You need serious psychological help. You do understand we are talking about football, right? I would recommend anger management classes.

You need serious psychological help.

Hold on, the GH troll needs help? Or I need help?

You do understand we are talking about football, right?

Correct, I am a Gopher Football fan on a Gopher Football board who likes to interact with other Gopher fans.

I would recommend anger management classes.

Who is angry? If I found out my father was on a Wisconsin football message boards being a troll I would be angry, but that is not the case.

Thanks Ski U Master - I was too lazy to look up the stats. I did think that it had been quite some time since MN swept WI & IA in same season.
