Tim Brewster will be the new head coach at Charlotte

We might be seeing more next year of Brew. He has 2 games left: Florida Atlantic and UAB. Both are at the bottom of the AAC (both are 2-8). If he goes 2-0 convincingly; my guess is they may want to keep him on. Charlotte is not in the place that they can be choosy.

I expect to see Hot Chili in Charlotte.

Brew doesn't get enough credit for building a relationship with local high school football coaches. Both Kill and Fleck have been able to build off of what Brew built in that regard. When he took over there was a very sour taste from any outstate coach towards the U because they were viewed as if they didn't matter from the previous staff. I was coaching at an all-state school and our school and area schools loved that he sent a coach to every school in Minnesota. It was a big deal.

Hopefully he can parlay the interim job into a more permanent position.

I remember him flying in on a chopper to one of my HS games. (not to see me)

Brew was close to having sustained success. He had some guys committed here who ended up as college or pro stars like LaMichael James, Taylor Lewan, Sheldon Richardson. He had coaches here like Jedd Fisch, Ted Roof, Everett Withers, Thomas Hammock, and others who went on to be FBS head coaches.

There was simply no consistency except Adam Weber through that era. Revolving door of coordinators, players having off field problems, lots of big recruiting chases that amounted to guys going elsewhere.

I think Brew would have been better in the NIL era where he could talk guys into being 1 year solutions and the sketchy guys can be more easily transferred out.

Not sure how close he was to sustained success but he was definitely learning on the job and getting better at the nuances of being a head coach.

Agree that he would have been more well suited for this current college football landscape than the one we had at the time. Love him or hate him Brew was not afraid to try and recruit against the big boys.

The only thing I remember from TC is being a little bitter/ornery when being interviewed right after he was fired, which, given the way his name was dragged through the mud, I can't really hold against him. I have zero ill will toward TC and wish him well. Jerry is a different story but that horse has been beat to death by this point.

Maybe I'm wrong on TC but I don't remember any insults coming from him.

Right! He fundamentally changed the perception related to Minnesota not being able to bring in bigger name players. Even though many of them ended up not coming here or not panning out, he was a shot in the arm in terms of the energy and enthusiasm about the team. Plus we got a Jeff Horton win vs Iowa out of it!

If I recall correctly, some of those higher rated players he was successful in recruiting were off the radar of a lot of programs due to various red flags. As a new head coach he was willing to take a chance.

I always hoped he would get another opportunity at a spot better suited to his skills and limitations (not intended as a set up for a punchline) where he could use what he learned from his failures here. Never should have been given his first college HC job at a Big Ten school, but he's just as qualified as a lot of people who start at a lower level and try to work their way up. Don't know if he ever pursued that. If he was going to get another shot, this would be a good place for it. He has recruited North Carolina a lot over the years. Pretty much the same Brew, although a bit more subdued than I remember. He does say that he would like the job permanently if that was a possibility.

I really don't know much about Brewster besides his final year at Minnesota. I was a freshman and every game had people chanting "Fire Brewster" so that was a nice onboarding.
 

I was at the Purdue game in 2008 and the talk from Gopher fans in West Lafayette was Brew was going to go to Tennessee. That was the hottest the chili got. 2010 loss to South Dakota was the end of my support for him. The Horton Iowa game though was so much fun! Bedlam!
 

well....he did get them to two bowl games here, so Charlotte just might work

That 7-1 record was a mirage due to the guy running the show behind the scenes, back then. Brewster shoved him aside and then we got to see the real Tim Brewster. And it was all a downhill race after that.
