Ditto. I liked the guy. He actually thought he could win here, he just didn't understand that rah rah sloganeering wasn't enough to win at the P5 level. I'll never forget that year we were 7-1 before it all fell apart, I actually thought he figured it out and we were onto something

I think he probably understood that, but also realized it was all he really had to offer. Glen Mason could say "look at what I did at Kansas." Jerry Kill could say "look at my track record at Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, etc." Fleck was able to leverage his work at Western Michigan.

Having that previous head coaching experience and success can help establish a culture, get buy-in from players and provide a resume to the media to build some legitimate excitement around the program. Brewster simply didn't have that resume, he wasn't even a DC/OC, so all he could really do is use those slogans and be a promoter.

I remember thinking his 7-1 record would catch the attention of other schools and they would poach him away from us. (silly me) :LOL: :LOL:

He was, yesterday he played the Brewster clip "If you go bear hunting, you better be prepared to catch the bear". This was after talking about coach Brewster becoming interim head coach at Charlotte.
 

I wonder what turf he covets now...Rose Bowl won't quite "cut" it...

I will be rooting for him. No reason for gopher fans to have any hard feelings toward the guy. He did his best and exited with grace (which can't be said about all former head coaches). It's not his fault Maturi was an incompetent clown and made that hire. What was he supposed to do, turn it down?

Yeah, Brewster was a disaster here but the fault for that is on Joel Maturi for hiring an unknown first time head coach who was not ready at all for the job.

Hopefully it works out for him.

Brew was close to having sustained success. He had some guys committed here who ended up as college or pro stars like LaMichael James, Taylor Lewan, Sheldon Richardson. He had coaches here like Jedd Fisch, Ted Roof, Everett Withers, Thomas Hammock, and others who went on to be FBS head coaches.

There was simply no consistency except Adam Weber through that era. Revolving door of coordinators, players having off field problems, lots of big recruiting chases that amounted to guys going elsewhere.

I think Brew would have been better in the NIL era where he could talk guys into being 1 year solutions and the sketchy guys can be more easily transferred out.
 

I'll be pulling for Brew. He gets a lot of hate because of his win/loss record but he has never said an ill word about the U like Jerry Kill. Brew poured his heart into the program but just didn't follow it up with the wins.

Brew doesn't get enough credit for building a relationship with local high school football coaches. Both Kill and Fleck have been able to build off of what Brew built in that regard. When he took over there was a very sour taste from any outstate coach towards the U because they were viewed as if they didn't matter from the previous staff. I was coaching at an all-state school and our school and area schools loved that he sent a coach to every school in Minnesota. It was a big deal.

Hopefully he can parlay the interim job into a more permanent position.

Is this his first time in the HC seat since his time in Dinkytown?
 

After I saw that clip of him in the Colorado meeting room last year I was like “really Tim”? - meh - not cut out to be HC IMO

Agree. Kind of like our BB coach. No ill will towards Ben.

If he could’ve maintained a consistent group of solid coordinators for an extended period he would’ve had a much better chance. Not sure if that was on him or the AD.
 


I wonder will he try to recruit from a helicopter like he did for the Gophers. I attended a h.s. game where he wanted to land at mid field prior to the game starting. ( home officials said absolutely not).

Well said. The Brewster Era is absolutely fascinating yet heartbreaking for the very reasons you mentioned. I had no idea he had those three committed. Hell, Marqueis Gray was like the 2nd dual threat QB in his class, imagine if PJ pulled that today.
