Thoughts on the new Gophers football billboard in downtown Mpls?

OP has it in its post.

Now, here is what I really wanted to say. The billboard has lots of people noticing it and talking about it. It did its job.

That is the power of advertising.

The problem with that is the people who are noticing it are already big fans. They want/need to go after those casual fans.

One thing that immediately came to mind when I saw the N in the advertisement was that Lyon's Pub in the area, only a couple blocks away, seems to be a Nebraska bar with a flag Nebraska flag hanging outside much of the year. Targeted advertising to Nebraska fans in the area?

I don't like the block "N" for Nebraska on the advertisement plus no phone number.

I would have at least highlighted or offset the word "Pass" not the block N. Really dislike the block N.
Believe it or not people still do call for tickets to the sales office, there not just ordered on-line. Why no phone number?
That and I dislike the "N" is for knowledge on the Helmet Nebraska logo. If that's not a subliminal message to Husker
fans to buy season tickets I'm not sure what else it would be. Finally they already have a good theme going on Gophersports.com
about the webisodes and theme "Brick by Brick" Gopher football, 2013. Why not build off of that instead of this
no passive all agressive thing. The block N actually catches your eye in the billboard more than the block M.

Oh hell! It's not so bad. I'm sure it would have worked for our new Norwood back in Richmond IF VCU would have played football. So, I'm certain that our new Norwood's crack former VCU staff in the ad department there who now work for Norwood here KNOW what they are doing. Some of you have been real Norwood fans...I guess you all just need to have a little more faith that Norwood knows football just as well as you think he knows hoops...

An overt act for Husker fans to buy tickets.
Agree with the Brick by Brick thing, include bricks, color, and get non-fans to ask "What is this brick by brick billboard?"

My wife and I saw it while going to Target Field last night. A casual Gopher fan at best, she said, "What a terrrible billboard. What's the deal with the N? It doesn't make any sense."
I cringed when I saw it in person. People walking near us were laughing at it.

I work in advertising and this is terrible. I have an intern that could produce better work in about 5 minutes.

Has anybody thought that that just could be a placeholder?

There might have been a last minute artwork change, or it can be a board that changes during the next few weeks.

Gosh I hope so, because that billboard is just awful.

Like Bleed elluded to, the 'Brick by Brick' slogan they came up with is actually pretty good. I like it, anyways. Why not continue with the same message? Oh wait, that would make too much sense, they certainly do not want to confuse anyone.

I would think the majority of billboard viewers(even downtown) are drive by viewers. It needs to be bold and simple. Not something that leaves you wondering what all it said.

It appears that sign is a new advertising campaign from the U. The same thing is on the scrolling subject bar 1/2 way down the http://www.gophersports.com/ homepage. There are more of them also, I saw one that had something about a blitzing linebacker in the exact same style. ugh, how dumb.

Here's the other one I saw.

Oh great, it looks like we did this in honor of our long time rival from Tuscon.

I think it's time to form the mob and visit the marketing dopes. I have a pitchfork. Anyone have a torch?

Brick By Brick was the Big 12's slogan last year. I can't find any video or photos online, but it had all the coaches and mascots doing construction work to lay a foundation after they lost four teams to better conferences.

"Woody" needs to be asked about this - as the athletic director I'd like to hear his thoughts. I haven't seen it up close and personal, but from the pics posted - it just lacks color to grab your attention - and the big N looks very weird. A billboard needs to get your attention - and in about 2 seconds - make a statement to make the reader take action - this does neither.

Well, that is interesting. I did not know that that was the Big 12's slogan last year. Thank you for making me aware of that though!

What color is the sky in your world?

I did see the other ad you were talking about. Still don't like the campaign. Maybe they should have done more with those ads before putting up a billboard.

Every time I see the commercials or advertisements out and about I just hate that block N even more.
