Thoughts on Teague/Ellis

This entire forum seems to have morphed into a combination of Groundhog Day and deja vu. I suspect Bill Murray and Yogi Berra may be the next additions to the coaching prospect list. I've felt all along that a new coach would not be named until after the NC Game on April 8. For those of you with your panties in a wad it's going to be a long uncomfortable wait. Meanwhile keep up the great comments. It's been cheap entertainment for a retiree like me.

It hasn't been cheap for me. in the last week, I have lost God knows how many hours of sleep due to laughter pains, Gone through 3 extra 1.75L of Jack, paced myself with 6 extra cases of beer (but all of my ice has been free), but I have only spent $7.83 in the last week for food with a couple of Whoppers from Burger King.

Wow! You remembered it all.

My doctor keeps me away from alcohol so I have to read this stuff without any pain killers. Also, living in Tallahassee I'm exposed (figuratively) to Tim Brewster and FSU football every day.

It seems as though Teague and Ellis may have overestimated their pull within the college basketball community.

It appears to me that Teague felt threatened from the beginning about the fact that Flip has a big following among Gopher fans and was available. This put Teague in the position of not being the power guy in this deal. It looks like he didn't like it, wanted to put his own stamp on it and the deal with Flip was an obvious way to clear the path of the obstruction. Everyone knew that Flip was likely to consider Ryan as an assistant. It had been discussed heavily on the Hole amongst us dummies. Teague knew it and should have had a friendly discussion with Saunders on day one. Then it never becomes an embarrassment for anybody. I think this points to the idea that Teague thought he did have a prime guy (Shaka?) nailed and was hoping he would never have to deal with Flip. Once the A guys were gone the expectations rose on Flip and he knew he had to deal with it. Dissing him with a lousy offer was the only way to go.

I hope he proves me wrong and gets Buzz or even Marshall both of whom are A listers in my view.

A listers in any fans' views are emotional attachments. A listers that matter are business professionals in the views of Teague/Ellis.

At the end of the day, Teague is a steward, the emotional views of the customers (Gopher fans and boosters) will matter. He has himself in a bit of a hot spot with many Gopher fans. He can recover with a successful hire. This hire will be viewed very harshly if it's just average because of the bungling of the Flip deal.

Could not agree more!

Agree, he ramped up fan pressure. Now it's a matter of finding more money or a diamond in the rough.

The other possibility would be to swallow his pride and take another look. That's not likely but it would be good to see.

I agree with you but Teague and Ellis are going to find out that Minneapolis is not like Richmond. Up here it is what have you done for me lately? If he wants to get the facilities upgraded, which is a priority, they had better get a head coach that will assist them in doing it. They had the candidate to do that but decided that he didn't meet their qualifications. I sure hope that their choice is as accepted as they believe he will be or else the fund raising will suffer and we will be another 5 years behind the rest of the conference.

This, along with MikeAZ's post sum it up for me. I thought the StarTrib article today about mid-major guys figuring out that knocking down $1 million in a place where they are pretty much kings beats $2 million in a place in a major market where everyone is crawling up your butt all the time.

Who knows where this goes. I just think Teague and Ellis think this Villa 7 crap is all the rage when it really is just crap.

Again, I have no problem with letting Tubby go. It's similar to the decision to fire Mason was. The question is getting a top-notch replacement and maybe that's tougher than Teague and Ellis thought it would be.

PS--If Saunders didn't take the job because Teague wouldn't let him put his son on the staff, that's just ludicrous. A bit petty on Flip's part, but uber stupid on Teague's.

Dear Norwood Isaiah Teague

I really hope your middle name isn't Isaiah because I'm having visions of the NIT in 2014 and 2015 with a potential Villa 7 hire.

Agree Agree.......... If not hiring FLip...( An Alum) and big booster was because he wanted to hire his own staff...which included his son ( an alum).....my guess is that this process is far from over....... Teague still has to convince someone to take the job, This person know knows that the AD will be crawling up their program perhaps even before the have had their feet on the ground. Flip never won the big show with the NBA,,,, however his coaching success in the CBA and his ties to the U made him all along the best choice to move the program forward while reinvigerating the past .Weather it was in wins and losses, player development, or just fundraising flip was the best all around best get for the program at this moment in time. No one ever said that his son had to be the successor.... that might have been someone else. I feel that Teague and Ellis...just might have to come back to Flip in the end

I am pretty impressed by the lack of real news on this search and its all been media or fan speculation more than anything. There has been very little public information which is very hard to control in this day and time. I am interested to see who they hire and hopefully its someone who can succeed at Minnesota. That being said many different coaches liked or not will have a shot to be a good coach.

How much of a practice facility have we pissed away on buyouts? 10%?

The homerism in this state is unreal for place that hasn't won anything in a really long time. That goes for all of the professional sports along with Gopher basketball and football. All this outrage over not hiring an alum who hasn't coached in college for 30 years is ridiculous. Teauge/Ellis will bring in fresh blood which is desperately needed if this city is ever going to shed the tag of loserville/mediocreville USA.

You win the prize, 19. I'll PM you all the information I see in the Tallahassee paper regarding Tim Brewster for the next ten years.

The question I'd ask is why so much faith in Mr.Teague?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove me otherwise. You're right he hasn't had to make a lot of big coaching hires, but he also hasn't made any bad big coaching hires either.

As far as the fundraising thing, I think his strategy has to be to convince donors that they can be a part of program taking the next step instead of waiting for results first.

I'm impressed with the takes in this thread including the above and those by bga. I agree with bga that, when you put 2 & 2 together, it's possible if not likely that Norwood thought he had Shaka in the bag - or maybe even had him in the bag and he wiggled out.

Won't repeat a bunch of stuff folks have already said just to assent. In the larger picture I get the increasing feeling that we're doomed to wander in the desert like the Israelites for who knows how many years, and screwing this Flip thing up is only an inevitable event in fulfilling that prophesy. I'll keep hoping, but in the meantime I'm going to try harder to get some work done this coming week.

Yeah, it's a process but at the same time there's an awful lot of people rationalizing & making excuses for Woody. Firing Tubby was the right move, but with no replacement waiting in the wings, while UCLA is simultaneously trying to fill their vacancy was crap management. Stevens was never coming here, can't put that on Woody. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I'm bummed he couldn't bring in 'his guy' Shaka. It would have been a real statement hire. Buzz was never coming here & certainly not now. Instead we move on & whiff on the Mayor (not shocking either). Grant? I'm not sure he's even an upgrade over Tubby? Now Flip's off the list too (not that he was the guy I wanted) & down & down the list we go. Should we really congratulate Woody if he lands their 8th or 9th choice?

THE SKY IS FALLING!
What a pixie. Take your preposterous post line by line and you'll be lucky to find more than a couple of factually correct statements. For now, let's just deal with the question of whether or not Grant would be an upgrade. Here's a shocker. It's not relevant to Smith's termination. He was done here. Not because someone better waited in the wings, but because he was unsuccessful in too many important ways. Would it have been best to have a solution ready? Yes. Necessary? No. And historically many coaching changes have been made in this manner: Decide the incumbent is unacceptable, terminate and launch a search for replacement. Once the new coach takes over, we still won't know if he's the right guy for a season or two. The big name doesn't determine that as we should all have learned from the past six seasons with a nationally known "top" coach.

No more of this uninformed whining. I'm taking a break here until a new coach is named.

Or maybe you can't trust everything you hear from the media. Or maybe Teague is taking his time making one of the most important hires in his career.
