thoughts on Leach

dpodoll68...Hilarious. That is great perspective!

I will harken back to the fact that the offense Leach would run here is different than that of every other team in the BT, thus making Minnesota a tough matchup each week for the opposing defense. Of course, I still would question if the run'n'shoot would work consistently outdoors in November, but am willing to give it a shot.

It rarely gets cold for more than one game each season. That includes away games. The weather might scare recruits, but it shouldn't scare coaches.

His O would very much likely expose a few Big Ten offenses, heck even Weber and our O put up big passing numbers against some teams in the past. It would definitely be a tough scheme to prepare against for some of the big physical defenses we'd see. If we could execute it well like NW does, weather wouldn't be an issue.

If we could execute it well like NW does, weather wouldn't be an issue.

It is a totally different version of the spread than what Northwestern runs. NW implements parts of the spread option and parts of the dink'n'dunk west coast. NW relies on the QB to run the ball and runs some option. Much like the spread we implemented under Dunbar in 2007 and 2008.

Leach on the other hand runs the "Air Raid" or the old school Run'n'Shoot. They do not rely on the QB to run at all and there are no facets of the spread option in Leach's offense. It is spread them out and chuck it around!

I guess I am warming to the idea.

I would be supportive if he could:

1) Not be in constant battles with the administration (in the end who does that help?).
2) Not do things to make himself an an easy target for the media to lampoon.
3) Not treat players in an immature manner (publicly calling them lazy, ridiculing their girlfriends, punishing a player for having an injury, etc.).
4) Have graduation rates that are no worse than 9th in the Big Ten(12).
5) Not vialate NCAA recruiting policies.

In other words, if he could conduct himself properly.

I don't know why you brought up the 4 and 5. He had excellent graduation rates at TT and I am not aware of any major (or minor) recruiting violations.

I'm not aware of any either. This would be a concern for any potential coach.

1)New Admin is an unknown right now, I'm not worried about that one yet. I'd probably take the coaches' side anyway.
2)Media will hate anyone with the title of Gopher's football coach, Leach would draw interest, which is something the media can sell, which may bide him some time until he wins(if he wins)
3)Meh on this one too, I don't want a bully, but some tough love is ok. My old coach used to say"If you have to knock them down, build them up twice as high"
4)he's a big time supporter of academics, don't think this is a problem
5)Never done it in the past to my knowledge

Leach is also becoming an acceptable hire, more risky because of his style, but he would bring a top coaching mind in here, and a sense of flare I think would be good for the mostly mellow fanbase.

I'm going to repeat what I put in another thread, but I think it's important.

I believe Leach would choose to coach at Colorado over Minnesota. So if this is your guy, you need to get him now as Colorado will be looking for a new coach soon. However, you don't know if Colorado would want to take on another controversial coach.

If Minny wants Leach, I doubt that Colorado could outbid the U with its BTN $$ and the obvious attractiveness of the Gopher's new facilities.

Also, the national BTN media platform would give him very attractive recruiting exposure that Brewster was only beginning to tap.

Has leach turned down in coordinator position since he has been let go?

There is a problem with Minnesota football that has been there for decades and thanks to the huge meltdowns in blown games, actually got WORSE during the Mason years despite the occasional success during his years as MN coach. It was so widespread that I wasn't sure if the fans were catching it from the team, or the team was catching it from the fans. It was a sort of "What's next... what is about to go wrong now?" type attitude that only served to solidify that... indeed... something WAS about to go wrong.

One of the things that draws me to Leach is a feeling he'd finally be the one to purge this. I don't have a good reason why I feel this way other than to say a salty personality like his might drive some changes that are much needed in the program.

I am not sure if this has been posted on this site. It was posted by SouthTexasGopher over on GPL. While there certainly may be some spinning being done here by a lawyer in the midst of litigation, this clip sheds some light on the story.

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/sports/2009/12/30/tx.leach.lawyer.shed.cnn.html

That video is Leach's lawyer with his spin on what happened. If you notice, the fan in the garage is an exhaust fan, which doesn't help cool anyone down. The second part of the clip regarding the electrical closet doesn't show where Adams was told to stand. The clip shows the interview room, which has some utilities in it, but the 'closet' is a long, narrow room, that is adjacent to the interview room. I'm just saying that this video contains inaccuracies and is about a lawyer trying to help is client with the PR battle.

leach being a lawyer and a very bright man makes me believe this story was more of a spoiled kid and a rich dad trying to get their way more so than leach "locking a kid in a closet." I never once believed this story and since I have had a few concussions and have been told to go into a dark cool room when I was having migraines and othe concussion symptoms. rich parents always think their kid is better and need more playing time,

I allowed for the fact that this was spin from an attorney in litigation. As for the rest of your points, you may be right. I never offered this up as conclusive of anything, perhaps i should have not attempted the "sheds some light" pun, as I agree it is just one side of the matter. However I did not get much but the James' side of things when the story broke and the video was new to me.

I want Leach. Period! The guy will change the attitude at Minnesota. He's a no bull*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# old school coach that runs an offense that when executed correctly is damn near impossible to stop.

I got the pun.:D
