Thoughts about the fake punt attempt

The call to go for it was fine. The play itself was not. Fake punts work off an element of quick strike surprise. Our play was too slow developing. Like the call, not the design.

Our fake punt this year and our fake FG against Michigan a year ago were not well-designed fake plays. We don't need them often, but when we do, it would be nice to see something effective.

Great win yesterday though! Go gophers!

Kill just said on his show that the fake punt was tried to gain an extra possession. With the way Indiana was playing, he wanted to have the ball last. He also said he was glad Williams scored but we "scored too fast".

I've seen this done dozens of times in Arena ball, which is a fast game.

I've been watching and waiting for a fake punt by Mortell. He's the Australian kid, the rugby player, right? I'm assuming that he knows how to run with a ball, and I've waited all season to see him take off with the ball like Greg Coleman once did for the Vikings.

Took too long to develop. IMO, just let the Punter take it (like Wisconsin did a couple years back).

Like others have said....I don't mind the call (sucks when it doesn't work) but there seemed to be too much lateral movement instead of up the field. It was also a shoestring tackle away from being a 'genius' call though. I like the balls of the coaches (4th and 10 last week, onside recovery against Iowa), they're playing to win instead of playing not to loose. I love the mindset!

Wasn't Wilson motioning to move up to the line prior to the punt?

28 is jalen myrick. one of our top 3 fastest guys on the team.

i actually thought is wan't a bad call but i would prefer to have someone faster then 28, what did you guys think about it?

True freshman James Myrick is one of the fastest players on the team. The guy that made the shoe shoe string tackle saved a long gain. Myrick gets the corner he gets another 10-15 yards.
Great call. Great play by the Indiana DB.

I liked the call. Indiana was moving the ball at will and we needed to control the clock. The play almost worked, good design.

This team is coming together and the foundations laid are starting to pay off. The coaches are aggressive in their play-calling and schemes and players love that. They're making a lot of plays many of the irritating Gopherholers never thought they would. Any call, any play that works is a good one. Ones that don't aren't as good. But, I think the fake might have won the game by instilling in the minds of the team that we're playing to win. And, when it doesn't work out, keep battling.

I'm pretty sure that you are one of those many who were dissing those of us who were asking the coaching staff to shed the conservatism. Now that they've shed the conservatism and success has been gained, you act like you agreed with us the whole time. Hypocrite.

Jalen not James

I can analyze every fake punt:

works=genius
fails=stupid

That's about the crux of it, but I thought it was an incredibly dumb call given the circumstances. We gave Indiana excellent field position twice on their last two scoring drives.

Good play by the Hoosier defender, but there were two guys out there for them, so the late developing nature of the play gave them a fair amount of time to react.

I like Kill and think he's doing a very good job, but he's going to pull this stuff out of his butt every now and then and we're just going to have to get used to it.

You just won't let this go until everyone here bows down to you.

Or love it it like I do! Play to win. It's not always going to work but I like it. D'Antonio (sp) at MSU likes to roll the dice as well.

What makes you think they have shed the conservatism?

You go into every game with a game plan that you've spent the entire week putting together. In many of the previous games, the game plan was largely conservative due in part to the opponent and in part due to the comfort level in our execution.

IU has one of the worst pass defenses in the country. They also knew they had to score points this week to beat the IU offense. The game plan this week was different.

If you think they're going to throw it 26+ times each game in the next three games because the coaches have suddenly "shed the conservatism", you know a lot less about football than you try to project.

I didn't read the whole thread but if others on here like the fact that we are now playing to win instead of playing "not to lose" then I agree with them 100%. I'm bothered much more by the drops we had that put us in a position to have to make such a risky call.

What makes you think they have shed the conservatism?...

Because the coaching staff and players have admitted as such, and the local and national sports media, who talk little about the Gophers, have taken notice at the difference. As the Gophers have won 3 in a row, unexpectedly, let's just try to enjoy and be happy.
