Gutsy call, and showed the kids that they were playing to win. It would have worked had he not barely been tripped up by his toes; he had the corner for the 1st down in his sight. Not only that, but it didn't matter where Indiana got the ball, they were going to score. The best hope for a win at that point is to keep the ball, and a fake punt may just have been the best bet. Though I'd have rather not had a fake punt play that took as much time as that one did...

I liked the call. There were gutsy calls all game so the call itself was on par with what I was expecting. Don't have a problem with it.

I'm honest about this kind of thing, despite hindsight. I didn't like it. At all. Gutsy, yes. And I don't mind taking some chances on the road, but this one was too big for me. When I armchair playcall, I get way too conservative in tight games.

I didn't mind it at all. Indiana was going to score regardless. Almost worked too!

The IU player made an amazing play. He covered a TON of ground from the other side of the field and made a shoestring tackle.

Also, as far as speed, isn't Myrick one of the fastest players on the team? I thought I'd heard that once. Not a bad choice if that's the case

Hated it, but didn't have time to dwell on it.

I can analyze every fake punt:

works=genius
fails=stupid

maybe so, when i watched it he did't look that fast

Great call.

Wrong kid carrying the mail.

A bad block didn't help.

I walked away to grab a water for a couple seconds and saw after the fact that they had faked it and had been stopped. I still liked the call.

I think there was about 6 minutes left on the clock at the time, so my thinking was if we punt it there, and Indiana has to go 80 yards (which they were going to do, no doubt in my mind), they might purposely take their time once they got on our half of the field and we might be left with little time to score, which would be horrendous, seeing that we don't know what a hurry-up offense is. So basically in my head we just shortened their TD drive haha.

That's why it made sense to me at the time, too. And in reality, that's just about how it worked out. The only thing that went differently than expected is how quickly the Gophs scored on the rebound.

I hated the call at the time. In hindsight, they were probably right, we had a better chance of picking up that play than stopping Indiana.

Side note, Myrick is extremely fast. He was a track star in Georgia in HS. I don't blame the OP though, he didn't look all that fast on the run.

The one player that Mortell kinda blocked is who gave the other guy the opportunity. Myrick had to run backwards to get around him.

I didn't mind the call. If it were me I would have just had the punter act like he was going to punt, then take off and run with it. Indiana was bailing out big time all night long to try and set up the return.

I liked the call. I wish they would have gone for it earlier on 4th down from the 35 for the very same reason. I felt Indiana was just too good on offense to keep giving the ball back.

Don't know if anyone else noticed it but sometime earlier in the game (2nd Qtr?) the Gophers punted from around their own 30 and if the fake was called on that play it would have worked to perfection. Indiana didn't rush the punter and sent everyone back to block for the return. If the punter would have tucked the ball in and ran he would have picked it up easy.

When Kill coached at NIU they were extremely ballsy (PAUSE) so I wasn't shocked at the playcall. It's no different then the 4th & 10 last week against Nebraska... if it works you're a genius... if it doesn't you're an idiot...

I thought it was a good call, and a very well designed fake. There was no indication the Gophers could stop Indiana and it was a gutsy attempt to regain control of the game. A shoelace tackle broke it up.

I've been watching and waiting for a fake punt by Mortell. He's the Australian kid, the rugby player, right? I'm assuming that he knows how to run with a ball, and I've waited all season to see him take off with the ball like Greg Coleman once did for the Vikings.

No he's a walk-on from Wisconsin.

I think Mortell is from Green Bay (same as Australia).
I liked the call myself but think Myrick made a bad move.
Seems to me the Gophers still haven't come close to their best game

I like the idea of the fake in theory, but I felt like there was too much going on. It took too long to develop and gave Indiana a chance to recover. I agree with GophersInIowa that I would've rather seen the punter get it and take off with it, or snap it simply to the first line of blockers and have them take off with it.

Obviously in hindsight it's easy to second guess it, but I saw exactly what Coach Kill did. We weren't stopping them no matter the distance of the field, may as well try to roll the dice and try to pick it up with Indiana on it's heels.

Indiana had all the momentum at the time, we couldnt stop them on defense, field position at that point did not matter, because IU was likely to score a TD regardless of where they got the ball.

I liked the play call, even though it seemed a little desperate, and seemed like a call that is made for a team on the ropes, even though we had the lead.

We were desperate though, and we were on the ropes. I liked it.

This team is coming together and the foundations laid are starting to pay off. The coaches are aggressive in their play-calling and schemes and players love that. They're making a lot of plays many of the irritating Gopherholers never thought they would. Any call, any play that works is a good one. Ones that don't aren't as good. But, I think the fake might have won the game by instilling in the minds of the team that we're playing to win. And, when it doesn't work out, keep battling.

For those who were harping that the Gophers were too bland on offense, you are seeing some progress with Jerry Kill's system. It just took time to bring to fruition. Gopher football is starting to get exciting and entertaining. Play to win baby!

GO GOPHERS!

I did not like the call in that situation. Granted, it doesn't matter what I think, but I would have punted in that situation every single time.

If they are going to score on you every time, then you don't make it easy and give them the ball at the 40. Punt it and make them drive the length of the field. They score all of their points in 3 minutes anyways so you would have had time to get the ball back regardless. Plus, if you make them drive further down the field then you increase the chance of a turnover. Just my opinion.

I like the decision to go for a fake. Not sure if I like the actual play that they used. Indiana seemed to be moving the ball at will, and if we would have gotten it, our defense would have gotten some more much needed rest.

I like the call. Because of field position, the opposition won't expect it. The Indiana player stayed home just barely enough and made an effort play to dive and get just enough shoelace to trip up the ball carrier. If he doesn't make that play, the fake works and the Gophs are in business. A great play by the defense doesn't make it a bad call.

As for Myrick, I believe he is one of the fastest on the team. Further, I believe is is normally on the punt unit. If you sub in another player, you potentially tip off the defense. Came within a shoelace of working...I like the aggressiveness!

I liked it. Indiana scores on that possession no matter what, even if they start at the 1 (that's what it felt like anyways). I trust this coaching staff, and Claeys said afterwards Indiana was lined up exactly how they thought they would and they were comfortable with the call. It didn't work out, but I'm still happy with it. It was a yard or two short, if Myrick keeps his footing we're all saying how great of a call it was. I like that this staff has some risk-taking qualities. That will pay off.
