This won't define our season

The Gophers got drilled in the second half because the other team shot the lights out and outplayed out us something terrible. Our defense was brutal. It happens. We don't want it to happen, but it does. News for you. ... unexpected losses happen at other schools, too.

I can never understand the mentality of "We're Big Ten champion/Final Four material" after a big win (i.e. UNC, West Virginia), nor "The sky is falling, we suck" after an unexpected loss. Ebb and flow of a season, folks. Relax. Let's get back on track by beating up on Cornell, then get prepared for our only true road game (Saint Joe's) prior to the Big Ten season.

Thank you. You need to come on here sooner after losses and restore sanity. Or maybe I just need to avoid this board for 12 hours after a loss. But I can't help myself.

What game defined our season last year?

Good point. Multiple games did. Texas A&M defined it was going to be hard. Michigan State @ the Barn defined heading into the ditch. Wisconsin @ the Barn defined the start of being pulled out of the ditch. None of these could be known at the time. Except by Pewter I guess.

they shot 80% free throws and 70% from 3... a team was bound to get hot shooting and it happened.

That was part of it. I don't have the box score in front of me but from watching the game it appeared we got killed on the boards in the second half also. It doesn't help when we take rushed and poor shots also. We also did not do very well on free throws in the second half. If we had taken better shots and hit our free throws we may have actually won. When we were down we rushed too much and just took a quick shot and nobody was in position to rebound so we had very few second attempts. I think they will bounce back in the next game. I am not to worried but we do need Al to run the point for us and push the ball more.

If you're going to call me out, at least get your facts straight. Here's a refresher of my post you're alluding to:

"It can define a season. Remember when Texas was ranked #1 last season? Or Alabama the a couple of years ago? The former was 8 seed and the latter didn't even make the tourney.

If you can't handle success, you're doomed. Just like in business, if you rest on your laurels, you'll get burned. The mentality absolutely needs to change. That effort tonight was disgusting. No fighting through screens. Lazy perimeter defense. Players not staying within the offense in the half court set.

We can go 2 different ways. Let that poison of a mentality infect our team after any bit of prosperity or teach the players a lesson that if they don't play smart or without effort, they're just another afterthought of a team. Believe it or not, this is actually a turning point. Let this slide and this effort and selfishness will become the norm, not the exception.

Make no mistake, som random D3 team could make those wide open shots we afforded UVa. We just got beat at home to a team that has little chance at making the NIT because we thought we could walk thru the motions and win. Time to see if Tubby can check their egos."

It CAN define the season. Notice the word "can"? Notice the absense of the word "will"? What exactly in my post is incorrect? What do you find so appalling that you felt the need to call me out in 2 different posts? What do you think will happen if we don't correct our glaring lapses in effort and intensity displayed yesterday? If we don't fix it, this loss will be the defining point and there are numerous examples of past teams that fell into that trap. If we get back to how we played against UNC and WV, this is just a bump in the road. What yesterday showed is we are completely capable of going thru the motions.

I'll grant you that. But am I wrong to have inferred that you think it's highly likely? Any game 'can' be season-defining, but from your multiple posts about it, I certainly have the impression that you are quite concerned that this will be it for the Gophers.

In any case, I wasn't really calling you out in this case, I was agreeing with the other poster's point that last season had multiple turning points that could only be identified in hind-sight. But I did take a shot at the end, so apologies I guess.

Virginia exposed Minnesota's weakness. Without Nolen Farakahn gets 23 and Harris gets 24. As hard as Hoffarber works he can't play against athletic guards. Combine that with the Freshman and you really had defense problems.

Joseph is definately an improvement from that perspective. He plays better defense and has the quickness needed. Need to get Nolen back.

Why does no one mention how much it hurts not having Rodney on D? Is it only the fact that Nolen was out that we got whooped so bad on the perimeter? IMO more respect needs to be given for Rodney's D and his non-presence in the second half was definitely felt (at the very least on the defensive end).

Um...did you actually watch his "defense" last night? Who do you think was guarding Farakahn?

People have given Rodney a ton of props for his D on other threads relating to the game.

Psychic Pewter, you still haven't explained... what makes this game a turning point???

Guess I didn't see it. Either way, there was a preponderance of discussion revolving around Nolen, bad games from Sampson, Iverson, poor D by Hoff, and poor O by Joseph. I thought that losing Rodney after only 7 minutes of play really opened up possibilities for Joe Harris (who Rodney was guarding - not Farrakhan). With Rodney in that whole game I think you hold Harris off the perimeter shot (at least less than 4-6) and bring him down at least 10 points.

Dear basketball know-it-all, you still never said what makes THAT game a turning point. Because the team could go two different ways? Well, you can say that after every game. Questioning your matter-of-fact statements that are really opinions makes me an internet tough guy? Interesting take.

Dear Internet Tough Guy,

Read my first post in this thread.

Sincerely,
Pewter
