There was a lot going on in today's game to talk about. Our guys played hard, we failed to capitalize early, and then we lost momentum. This play when the score was 7-7 with just over 5 minutes to go in the first half was huge. I believe this obvious holding penalty is called, it would have made a difference. Their QB was in the end zone, and our guy was held with both hands around the waist (right in front of the ref). A pass was completed for a ~20 yard gain and a long td drive ensued.

I was screaming at the TV on this play....should've been holding while the QB is in the endzone....SAFETY!

Would not have been a safety, but would have been placed at the 1 or 2 yard line. For a safety, the penalty itself would have had to occur in the end zone. In this case, the penalty was committed around the 2 or 3 yard line. Spot foul - half the distance. Either way, could have short-circuited a drive that ended in a TD.

Yeah, thanks for clarifying that it wasn't a safety, but unbelievable the call was missed.

Given the way the game went today, not really unbelievable. The pass interference call that gave Mich the ball on the 2 was way to ticky tack to me

I was also screaming at the TV when this play went on, safety would have completely changed the game. You have to admit though, after watching the replay, it wasnt as obvious of a hold as it seemed and I can see how it could have gone either way.

During the game I screamed from the stands that the refs seemed to give Michigan calls because they deserved them. That seemed to irritate Michigan fans in my section. I am now a tosu fan in that rivalry game. So many bad calls. I always know when kill is right when the refs ignore his yelling. I am appalled at the aristocracy of college football anointing the likes of Michigan ans stamping on man when they challenge the elite. Makes me gag!

Can't disagree. I suspect MSU and their fanbase would also agree with this after I watched the end of the MSU-NE game yesterday. Didn't watch the Pittsburgh-Notre Lame game but if I had to guess.....

One word describes the behavior of their fans, entitled.

I think that the refs called what they saw. But when its a close call, Michigan got the benefit of the doubt every time.

The refs call what they see. Do they get it right all the time, no.....do they miss calls...yes. But I am so tired of listening to fans act like the refs sit down before the game and decide how they are going to screw the University of Minnesota in that game.

First off, the refs are not why we lost. But I think it's very reasonable to think that refs can be influenced by certain players/teams even if they don't realize it. Go to the 6:13 mark here. Watch the total cheap shot on Nelson. You don't think a penalty is thrown if it was on Denard Robinson?

Just once I would like for this to happen:

Hey Ref...Call them the way they are, not the way you see them!!!!!!!!!

Ref threads after the Gophers weren't even competitive. Never change Gopher Hole.

Definitely not something that is confined to Gopher hole. I always find it funny that when a team loses the refs were against them but when they win you rarely if ever hear a peep about poor officiating during the game. My issue is with the conspiracy theories about the refs are for one team over another team.

I actually got to know a college ref a few years ago and we talked about a lot of the gripes you hear from fans. Thing is these guys get evaluated on every call they make regardless of the opponent. After every game they go through and grade every call that was made during the game to see if it was the right or wrong call. They also get plays submitted to them by the coaching staffs that they felt were missed. They are constantly working to do the best job they can and they take a lot of pride in what they do. The last thing they want is for one of their calls to change the outcome of a game. On top of that most of the guys at the college level have the goal of getting to the NFL one day, the only way you do that is through getting calls right and doing the best job possible.

Both are wrong. Offensive penalties behind the line of scrimmage are enforced from the previous spot. In this case 1/2 the distance from the previous spot.

If that is true, (and I do believe you, just griping) why aren't they getting better? Maybe it's just being a fan of an underdog team for most of my life, but it seems like every questionable call goes against the Gophers, especially when the game is still in doubt. The Goph's didn't lose the game because of the refs, but that doesn't mean that I have to just accept bad calls and pretend they didn't happen. If there is so much review and analysis, why is there no accountability?

Why is it okay to trash the refs but one comment about the Gophers coaching staff is a crime against humanity?

If you can do better get out there and do it.

There is accountability, it's just not public. Just like players and coaches f-up on the field, so do officials. It's the human part of the game.

Maybe it should be public. The job that they are doing is very public. Why not say that a change has been made in the crew based on reviews of the last X number of games. I'm not saying put the guy's home address and phone number out there, but more public accountability would definitely shut up blow hards (like myself sometimes, especially after a loss).

Yes, good catch. Enforcement from previous spot, so the ball would have been around the 4.5 yard line. I think the original spot was at the nine. The resulting play took the ball out to the 26.

The thing is it wouldn't. Not talking about you specifically, but fans are always going to bitch about the officiating when their team loses. It happens at all levels from youth leagues to the pros. As fans we really discount just how hard the job is for these guys. They don't have the advantage of slow motion replays on every call, things are moving a million miles an hour and they are watching a lot of different things all happening at the same time. I get as frustrated as anyone when they miss or blow a call but I really feel like people don't give them enough credit for all the stuff they get right as well.

Well said.

I just thought this one was pretty obvious and right in front of the ref. in the Purdue game, I thought we could have been flagged for some pi calls.

I guess your sarcasm meter was turned off? Sorry, I should have known better.

I thought the PI on Carter was even more suspect.

The replay showed that the Michigan receiver had both hands on Carters back and pushed him.

It should have been offsetting penalties, offsides on the Gophers and offensive pass interference on Michigan.
