Did this team play any defense in the second half? Did they make a single stop? From the point where they started choking away an 11 point lead to the end of the game the ONLY stop I remember is the charge on Purdue. Just atrocious soft play on the defensive end...where was the aggression on "D" from the first half?

Mo and Andre Hollins: Way to start the second half guys. First FIVE possessions these guys combine to miss FIVE easy shots and commit a turnover (yes Mo missed a layup then proceeded to travel after the Gophers secured the offensive board). Two seniors can't come out and do that, lucky we expanded the lead again.

The officiating: This almost doesn't matter with how poorly the Gophers defended in the second half, but this was a ****ing joke. There were TWO complete BS calls on Mo that resulted in four points at the line for Purdue. Their was another play where Eliason was mauled on a rebound which led to two more free throws for Purdue. If it was called tight on both ends, I'd have no gripe, but it wasn't. The Gophers couldn't buy a foul call the entire second half.

Gopher choke jobs: When the **** will this end? So, So tired of watching teams collapse. Nobody stepped up and made a play. Everybody panics and plays soft when the momentum starts swinging the other way. It's brutal to watch as a fan. Is it too much to ask for a team that starts two senior guards to be mentally tough?

What a gross way to start the season, they better find a way to win at Maryland.

Yes

Well stated. It will blow over by tomorrow I'm
Sure, but so frustrating to lose this game. The problem with being optimistic about a game is it sucks when this happens.

I'd also argue a bit the officiating led to playing less aggressive D, guys scared to foul.

Thought the foul call on DeAndre where he had The Purdue player trapped on the sideline was pretty awful too.

I know Konate and Gaston aren't ready to play big minutes, but I'm so sick of watching "No Hands Walker" and Elliason who can't stay on his feet. I know we will struggle next year down in the post, but I will surely not miss watching Walker and Elliason.

Absolutely brutal loss! Every year it's the same thing. You're on the bubble when you don't beat the teams you're supposed to beat. There are too many toss up games in the schedule, you can't afford a loss to a bad team, even if it is the first game of the conference season. And I don't want to hear any excuse that it's tough to win in Mackey Arena after leading the whole game. Purdue is a bad team regardless of location. Amazing how quickly a double-digit lead and team confidence can evaporate!

I'm afraid our boy was out-coached a bit today. :(

Just looked at the play by play. Carlos Morris put the Gophers up 55-44 with 9:37 left. Purdue then proceeded to score 16 points on the their next seven possessions, scoring all seven time including two three pointers. At that point it was 60-58 Purdue. Gophers missed a free throw and committed two turnovers during that stretch while scoring just once and securing a whopping one offensive rebound.

Bad defense, bad offense. Just gotta be more consistent.

I know this will scare some, but we could really use a Miles Tarver type of kid this year.

47 second half points pretty well tell the story. Morris really had a bad defensive game. Welcome to the B1G. He'll get better, but remember if you saw his JC video he was all offense.
Andre Hollins is Andre Hollins. Will it be the good Andre, or the bad Andre? Today it was bad.

Absolutely, even a Stamper or Puchtel would help this team. I miss having someone that could be described as mean and nasty or hell, just physical on the Gophers roster.

We had a really bad half, it's that simple. We weren't aggressive, didn't play defense, and didn't get a whole lot of calls. It happens, time to move on to the next one. The season is far from over.

Agree. On all fronts. I don't like mentioning refs, but those guys were awful in the second half. The point is pretty moot however considering how equally awful our effort was on defense.

How did playing 6 straight creampuff teams at home to end the non-conference schedule do anything to prepare this team for the conference season? Felt like our guys started to panic as soon as Purdue made it close. I am pissed off that, no matter how hard I try not to, I get my hopes up every year that the Gophers will surprise me come conference play.

I watched the second half of the Illinois game at Michigan yesterday and told my wife that I sure hoped the Gophers don't do the exact same thing against Purdue.

And yep....they did. :(

I agree - for 30 minutes, we didn't play to bad, but the last 10 were terrible. We have to continue to be aggressive, especially on defense, and make the easy shots that we get on offense.

Goddam. This fan base sure likes to beat the absolute sh1t out of horses.

This all sounds eerily reminiscent of the St. John's game. Not as much official stuff though.

Hey, the truth always hurts. Maybe you should quit reading then. Find something else to do than read every post in every thread on here religiously every day.

I loved Miles Tarver!
But remember - KFAN's Common had a bet that Miles would have more fouls than points his senior year. He lost the bet, but barely.

Had to listen on Sirius today and the Purdue announcing team ws extremely pessimistic. It sounded like they felt like they only had a chance because Painter is undefeated at home against the Gophers. Bad loss.

No synergy. It was like Fennel Cartwright trying to maneuvers a sailboat out there. This basketball team is NIT. AT BEST! They're lost at sea!

You're insufferable bet all 46 of your list either came yesterday or after losses

I feel real comfortable about this team based on the vitriol some of our more "intelligent" posters are spewing in the last 24 hours. Always bet against the idiots.

Our biggest weakness is rebounding, Purdue's biggest strength is rebounding. Hammons is super talented, but gives inconsistent effort... except against us, he is always very motivated against us.

This was always going to be a tough game, even if we are the better overall team, which I still believe that we are.

I was pissed off after the game too, but I don't quite understand all the hate and pessimism that seems so rampant around here right now.

I had hoped Josh Martin could be that guy (for now). Maybe Konate can.

I agree. But with a likely loss on Saturday it's hard to be optimistic. We'll be facing a virtual 'must win' against a good OSU team on January 6th. That's not good.

No way this team wins at Maryland.

Comes off as pretty negative, but I agree. If you can't beat Purdue, you certainly aren't looking good on the road against a team like Maryland. I was pretty surprised Maryland needed OT to beat Michigan State in East Lansing, because the Terps are a very polished team.
