Things going well at Illinois

He’s no different than other HC’s. He wants to win. And he will be looking the type of player that fits into his program. Love struggled there and BB has raised the bar and realizes he must improve recruiting. Honest appraisal so now we will find out if he can elevate the program. Tough gig
Raised the bar? You mean like he did at Arkansas? Lol…

No question that they need to get better players, but undercutting all of your current players is not a very good idea.

Buthead was handed a very good system at Sconny, full of good players and pipelines for recruiting. Plus he had Alvarez to help guide him. He didn’t do very well when he had to build his own program at Arkansas. Now he is again showing his building ineptitude by pissing off all his players. Frost is doing the same things at Nebraska, claiming he was going for the B1G title his first year and blaming the players for all the problems.

As much as everyone wants to mock PJ, he really understands the process. His culture and slogans quickly weed out the players that can not and do not want to be here. His constant positivity builds encouragement and improves player’s performance and expectations.

Rebuilding a program requires time and a lot of hard work. You can do it in a positive and productive way, or you can just shit all over yourself. We have examples of both.

He totally should have stayed at Wisconsin - he could still be there and have everything he needs. Going to Arkansas turned out to be a monumental blunder. If he fails at Illinois he will probably never be a head coach at a Power 5 school again.

He means that no freshmen/sophomore/juniors are on the two-deep.

Harmless statement taken out of context.

I miss Lovie already. One of the most incompetent coaches to walk the sidelines in the B1G in decades, but managed to keep his job for quite a little bit in Champaign. He was the gift that just kept on giving.
Kind of like Frost.

True - but if you read between the lines he probably isn't too happy with his depth and realizes this rebuild is going to take a lot longer than he thought!!

The actual statement was better than the Tweet, which is why I hate selective Tweets and edited quotes without context. He was specifically referring to the past offensive line recruiting and QB to a lesser extent. He's probably not saying anything the players haven't already heard, but still, most coaches find a way to polish a turd in public speeches - if nothing else, so opposing teams don't use it in negative recruiting.

I seem to recall both PJ and Kill tossing out references to inferior rosters in their first years in more muted ways. I suppressed the Brew years and don't remember.

I’ll help jog your repressed memories. Ol’ Jer questioned the toughness, talent, and discipline of the players he inherited from Brewster.

BB wants to fire all the kids like Barry A did in 1991. Except Barry’s actions in 1991 caused the NCAA do create rules to end that nonsense. Now the coach simply has to convince the kid to leave.

Bielema doesn't have a Phi Beta Kappa key swinging around his neck, but is this little snippet really that much different from some of the statements Kill made when he took over for Brewster? PJ's Year Zero approach was tamer, but really hit at the same issues.

Agree...Although he did swipe Ragnow right out from under us....

Didn't Jerry get an extension within two months of starting.
He convinced the AD at the time the project was so bad.

Went public to the media that he had to re-teach everything.
Went public saying "Whatever Brewster taught you, you need to unlearn".

It was such a rebuilding project, Kill got an extension just for staying according to ol' Jerr.

I think Bert and to some extent Mike Leach are just running out the clock and collecting a paycheck.

I'm sure they would say they want to win, who doesn't, but in reality they're just collecing their money from whomever they can.

I was looking for the post game interview with Kill where we goes in on the former staff and the players not going to class before he got here. He definitely made references to the character and work ethic of the players -- I don't know about skill per se.

Brett Bielema was a byproduct of coaching for a Wisconsin team that had identity and culture. Barry Alvarez turned the Badger program around and then had his hands all over it when he became AD. Bielema is a garbage coach, proved that at Arkansas and will confirm as Illinois coach.

Now that Barry has stepped away from Wisconsin, they will return to mediocrity for years to come.

Best coach speech throwing players under the bus since Mike Leech complained that his players fat girlfriends keep telling them how good they are.
