Sounds similar to what UNLV was saying after the game last Thursday.

Gregg Brandon was not a happy camper this week, as the New Mexico State Aggies prepared to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Brandon, NMSU's football offensive coordinator, talked about his unit's performance during last week's 56-7 loss to the University of Texas. He pointed to the team's three turnovers against the Longhorns; the Aggies inability to get the ball in the end zone; and, in his words, how the group's execution "sputtered at times."

"It's 21-7, early in the third, and we've got the ball on the 15-yard line," Brandon said, reflecting on an early second-half drive. "We throw a pick. After that, the flood gates opened. We score there, it's 21-14. Who knows."
Yet, while all those statements are true, it's also true that the NMSU offense looks largely improved in 2013.
Schematically, it's light years ahead of where it was a year ago. The new model has the team implementing a spread, no-huddle attack, with some pistol formation, play-action passing and bootlegs, along with the quarterback-option running game.

Last week against the Longhorns, NMSU had nine different wide receivers catch passes (led by Josh Bowen's eight receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown). Quarterback Andrew McDonald completed 32-of-46 passes for 242 yards, while getting sacked just once (he also led the team with 50 rushing yards on the evening). And the Aggies got the tight ends involved in the passing game, with Andrew Dean and Perris Scoggins combining for nine catches for 47 yards (last year the entire tight end unit tallied just 30 catches on the season).

The first half did in fact see the Aggies move the ball at an effective rate on the No. 15 team in the country, with McDonald's 11-yard scoring pass to Bowen giving the team a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter.

"I loved what we're doing on offense," head coach Doug Martin said. "I think we're really well balanced ... I think our offensive line ... I think they can be a strength for us and I think they played well. But you have to be able to make plays.
"I like where we are offensively"

With Minnesota coming to town this weekend, the Aggies hope to move the ball at an effective rate once again, only this time protect it and, in turn, find the end zone more frequently.
When asked what the Aggies were capable of if they eliminated such turnovers and turned red zone opportunities into touchdowns, Brandon replied, "Winning the game."

Three Coaches With MAC Ties Meet Saturday

LAS CRUCES - When Doug Martin and Jerry Kill face off this weekend on opposing sidelines, as they lead their respective New Mexico State Aggies and Minnesota Golden Gophers onto the college football field, they'll be very familiar with each other's styles and philosophies.
That's because both are former coaching adversaries from the Mid-American Conference, where Martin was head coach at Kent State (2004-10) and Kill held the same position at Northern Illinois (2008-10). The two met just once during that three-year period, with Northern Illinois winning 42-14.

"I've known Jerry Kill for quite a while. Me and him are very close friends," Martin said.

"Physical, hard-nosed, disciplined," Martin added concerning how Kill's teams play the game. "Jerry is one of the most humble people you'll ever meet. If you look at his record, what he's done is won at all levels of football. He's won everywhere he's been."
Said Kill of the Aggie offense, "they're going to run option offense out of the pistol (formation). They're going to try and throw bubble screens, quick screens. Quick passing game, get the ball out."..

And Martin, who had a seven-year run at Kent State that saw the head coach build a foundation that helped lead the program to success in the seasons to follow.

"It's got a long tradition of having a lot of great coaches come through there," Martin said of the MAC. "The midwest is a big football area. Football's very important in that part of the country. There's a lot of high school players in that area to recruit."

I suspect a majority of the NMSU success last week could be attributed to a combination of two things; zero respect from UT, resulting in a lackadaisical start for the Longhorns, and NMSU coming out and throwing a few things at Texas that they weren't prepared for and hadn't seen on tape.

At least the Gophers will have some tape to prepare for this one

Walked down the Lake for beakfast this morning. We were sat by another couple. I was wearing a Gopher shirt. The guy says congratulations on the win last week over his Runnin' Rebels. He's a postman and has season tickets. Talked about he game(s), Sam Boyd Stadium, TCF etc. He mentioned that UNLV never covers. Told him that after looking at the schedule this year they could get 5-7 wins out of it.

He said "Yeah, that's what they say every year and we end-up winning two."

Yes, there are fan bases out there that have had it worse than we have.

Aggies announcer says they have more team speed than the gophers... if true that is sad. Edwards needs to get healthy.

If the Aggies announcer said it then it must be true. I think I heard that NM'icans do not lie.

Here's one from the hotel.

Now that's how you throw a team under the bus.

Not saying this is true. However, the Gophers do clearly lack speed on offense right now.

Absolutely positively not true. You will see.

Team looks ready and prepared. Squad meetings just broke up. They are focused. Look for some kickass.

Not sure how a 2nd Half blowout against a team that clearly didn't think they'd have to play for real in the opening quarters with no tape on there opponent is something positive to take away after the game...

Think of how this board would take it. Some would be utterly annoyed we got destroyed and some would say we're 90% around the corner because we kept it within a td for a half...

I could see that happening...
