The two negative old guys sitting behind me....

Some people can't wait to get out of bed so they can start complaining about something. I watched the entire Nebraska game with my Father-in-Law who would fit nicely into that category.

I'm middle aged, so this isn't an old guy rant.
These two guys behind me were incredibly negative about the Gophers today, just bitching and complaining about everything. (the crowd was too small, we pass too much, we run too much, coaches can't manage the clock, defense is terrible, blah blah blah) Meanwhile, they were completely silent whenever something positive happened.
Finally, I turned around and let them have it midway through the fourth quarter after they whined about the play calling on a three and out.
I asked in a very loud voice, "Guys, we're ahead 24-10 and are about to to go 8-2. What more do you want? If coming to the games is so miserable for you, why not just stay home?"
Several of the other regulars around us laughed. The two guys didn't say anything, and remained silent the rest of the game.
I felt a little bad afterward, but cripes, I had to listen to them complain for almost three hours.

Studwell and Indi?

Man, I hate it when folks just bitch to bitch. It happens at both the football and basketball games near my seats. Be positive.. just once.

I have no problem when someone complains when things are going bad. But then cheer when things are going well or someone makes a nice play. Why even be a fan if you can't at least enjoy the good moments? Doesn't make any sense to me.

You must have been sitting in the press box.

You have no right to call anyone out or shame them. If you don't like hearing people's opinions then maybe you should stay home. I'm sure you have never said anything negative at a sporting event. If not good for you. Did you post this to receive affirmation that you did the right thing?
At least he's not a disingenuous liar. Do these words sound familiar?
This is the least of their problems. OL very disappointing. I've been a season ticket holder for 18 years. But I'm done. This is not a knee jerk reaction. I've been thinking about it for awhile. It is never going to get any better. It is what it is. We are losing to a terrible Iowa team that we beat the last two years when we had supposedly worse teams. I'm done getting excited only to be let down over and over. I'll spend my money on something else.

Oh, by the way, congratulations on having your ban lifted here.

I was right there for that too. It was primarily a 20-something guy and he bitched the whole game. Never heard a reaction to anything positive out of him.

I wonder if they were the same two guys who sat behind me at the basketball game Friday night. From the opening tip, they were purely disgusted. This team has no discipline, slow down and take care of the ball, these players have no idea how to play basketball. They were yelling at Oto the whole game, and he played pretty well. I wanted to turn around and point out that with Pitino, this is the style they will play, helter skelter. But they seem to want Tubby's slow down, pass the ball around the 3-point line offense. It was very annoying to listen to for 2 hours.

What bothered me most about these two guys was that they just didn't seem to enjoy the game at all. I've been in the same seats for three years, and the two of them make it to about half the games. It's the same every time they show up. At the UNLV game, they bitched about the defense after the second play of the SEASON.
Yesterday, we had a series where on consecutive plays we had rushes for 39 and 5 yards. On the next play, we ran the ball again and got only one yard. The one dude then said, and I quote, "We can't run the ball against these guys. Roll out and throw the damn thing!"
These guys also sold their Iowa and Nebraska tickets to opposing fans, which tells me something right there.
They seem nice enough other than their negativity. They always say hello to the other season ticket holders when they arrive. They're just hard to stomach once the game starts and yesterday I'd had enough.

So they have the right to freely express their opinions, but he doesn't have the right to express his?

Nice logic there.

lars3212, with respect to Rickman55's comment, I have to agree with Rickman55. These old timers were not directing their complaints at CP Gopher. Yet CP Gopher's comments were directed at these two old timers, publicly humiliating them in the process. So why were the two old timers complaining about everything? Probably because they are in a state of disbelief. They have probably been suffering since 1967 attending all of the games, and over the years have been conditioned to resignation that things will not get better and we will always find a way to lose. It is tough to reverse almost 50 years of post traumatic stress. Give them a break and thank them for their support of Golden Gopher Football through good times (few since 1967) as well as the bad (mostly since 1967.)

Freedom of speech works both ways, people might just use their freedom of speech to respond. Some people just have learned so well how to be miserable that they don't know how to be happy when things are going well. If people insist on sharing their negativity with the world, people just might respond.

Reminds me of a guy that sat across the aisle from me. He would bitch and scream when we blew a play but wouldn't even flinch when we did something good. He would bring his son who I guess was around 7 or 8 years old and a couple times this kid jumped up and yell "you suck". Nice way to raise your kid. Also he (the Father) would constantly scream "show the replay" (granted sometimes they are bad about showing them). One time he yelled it right after they showed the relay and I yelled back at him "they just did". Everyone around us started laughing and he turned and looked at me with this look and I think he was going to say something until he saw my 6'7" hubby sitting next to me and thought better of it. Funny thing is hubby probably would have just sat back and let me at him. He knows I can take care of myself. LOL.

Unfortunately these guys make up a majority of the season ticket fanbase, these are the diehards that have been coming for years all while the Vikings ate up football market share in the Twin Cities. They're used to going and complaining because the play has been worth complaining about for most of 40 years. The biggest challenge for the U of M, Norwood Teague and others is building a season ticket base from the younger generation...something sustained winning usually helps build.

Good for you. Come down to section 142-all we do is high five each other.

Now hold on, I'm not a young guy trying to embarrass a couple of old timers. I'm approaching 50 and have had season tickets for a long time. Like them, I've also been through the rough patches of Gopher football.
Of course they have every right to voice their opinions, but I also have the right to voice mine. Why should I, or any of the other good fans around me, have to listen to their constant barrage of negativity without responding? Actually, I wanted to respond a lot sooner, but held back because I'm not really a confrontational person.
The other people around me are great. Lots of high fives and fun at every game regardless of what's happening on the field.

Then I would suggest that you stand all the time, high five continuously, block their view of the game, so they leave. It's called "get rid of the riff raff."

LOL! Well done, doc! :)

I had two guys almost come to fists over whether we should throw on every play, or run on every play. It was very odd. This was while having success. Winning is hard on some people.

I have gotten to the point where I don't care anymore about the people around me. I don't mean that in a bad way but I am there to be a fan. The frustrating part is the season ticket holders. I know who they are because I have seen the same faces since 2009. They sell their tickets to the enemy. Back to my original point. I am the first person standing and yelling on 3rd down, on big plays, on scoring plays, and singing the rouser. If I am in the way too bad. I would never stand the whole game but I will not apologize for standing and cheering and being a fan. That being said it was better last week as the whole section was into the game.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
