I'm middle aged, so this isn't an old guy rant.
These two guys behind me were incredibly negative about the Gophers today, just bitching and complaining about everything. (the crowd was too small, we pass too much, we run too much, coaches can't manage the clock, defense is terrible, blah blah blah) Meanwhile, they were completely silent whenever something positive happened.
Finally, I turned around and let them have it midway through the fourth quarter after they whined about the play calling on a three and out.
I asked in a very loud voice, "Guys, we're ahead 24-10 and are about to to go 8-2. What more do you want? If coming to the games is so miserable for you, why not just stay home?"
Several of the other regulars around us laughed. The two guys didn't say anything, and remained silent the rest of the game.
I felt a little bad afterward, but cripes, I had to listen to them complain for almost three hours.

I assume that they were conditioned to a winning team......era 60's. Then again....we haven't been that good for a long time. You did the right thing.

I don't blame ya man! I would've done the same thing!

It's a self-defense mechanism. Just like Nebraska has an expectation of winning that simply can't handle a loss to Minnesota, a lot of us old-timers have an expectation of dashed hopes, screw-ups, and general malaise. It will pass but there will be an adjustment period that will vary by individual.

I wouldn't read too much into it; you were right to speak up.

A few short weeks ago, many were calling for Kill's firing. I think most of them are probably on board now--although I think I saw a couple of "Fire Claeys" posts in the third quarter.

As for me, I'm really, really nervously optimistic. Optimistic to dump my usual sign-off of "Next year in Pasadena" and replace it with:

"Heck, yes, this year in Pasadena!"

You have no right to call anyone out or shame them. If you don't like hearing people's opinions then maybe you should stay home. I'm sure you have never said anything negative at a sporting event. If not good for you. Did you post this to receive affirmation that you did the right thing?

So they have the right to freely express their opinions, but he doesn't have the right to express his?

Nice logic there.

I catch hell for reminding people of that all the time!!!

Sounds like you were the one sitting in those spots!

And what exactly are you doing with this post...?

Fail.

If you couldn't enjoy that game as a Gopher fan today, pack it up, shut it up and root for somebody else. Well done, CP.

You thought that this:

"These two guys behind me were incredibly negative about the Gophers today, just bitching and complaining about everything. Equaled this:

"I'm sure you have never said anything negative at a sporting event."

If that was your reason for posting the above, the answer is yes. You did do the right thing. I am surprised you didn't say more to Souhan and Reusse.

We all need reminders at times, especially if we haven't had a lot of experience with enjoying success. While I think it would be hard for any supportive fan to listen to that the whole game, the only thing I sorta wished you'd done different is telling them to stay home. I was reminded last week that we should accept all converts on this bandwagon. You did good by telling them "we're about to go 8-2" but perhaps showing them how to be positive with "let's enjoy it" or "wasn't that a great play?"

I might get killed for this, but just thought I'd give my 2 cents.

Were you in 211, I watched someone lay into some complaining fans. Personally I liked it. Ski-U-Mah

It is annoying to hear people gripe about stuff at the game, especially when we're winning. Even when the team is losing, it can be too much. At the Iowa game I had a guy yelling out Boooooo!! at the Gophers the whole second half. An he's a season ticket holder. I hope he was yelling Yeaaaahhhh!!! every play just as loud today. But today I was in section 245 and everybody was great. It was a little cold up there, but the sight lines are great and it was well worth it to see win number 8. The Wisconsin game will be really big. I think my voice will recover by then.

Well done, CP! Those who pay their money have the right to voice their opinion; however, spewing bias against the team in TCF is intolerable. I have encountered it two times in 40 years. Both times they were faculty which took my chastising to another level.

Once was chewed out by a couple of dickheads for "talking too much" at a Gopher BB game. Conversation was general chit-chat and nothing negative. Did not realize Williams Arena was in fact a library.

Anyone who's been a fan of this university.......should stand up and give these kids a hand. We have no 4 star recruits, no respect and no love outside of this state. i was skeptical, but Kill is building something....AND...i don't think we have to worry about him leaving.

This thread brought to mind a memory of long ago at the Barn. I was a lot younger, and a lot more enthusiastic then, needless to say. In the 1982 final game for a Big Ten Title vs Ohio State, the whole game I was up and jumping and yelling with my then 14 year old son. We had "old people" yell at us..."Sit down and stop having so much fun, it's only a game ya know!!!!"

This was the roster:

I was right there for that too. It was primarily a 20-something guy and he bitched the whole game. Never heard a reaction to anything positive out of him.

I thought Hageman was a 4 star?

I used to have some dimwit sitting behind me who complained nonstop. Nothing even remotely thoughtful. Thankfully I was able to move my seats. Two years of that was enough. Granted the team was poor and everyone has their right to their opinion, but it seemed to me the guy was doing to get attention.

I agree. You did the right thing.

Man, I hate it when folks just bitch to bitch. It happens at both the football and basketball games near my seats. Be positive.. just once.
