He's taken a lot of heat for that play. I haven't seen the replay so maybe it's obvious on tape, but why are so many people saying Shabazz quit on and/blew the play? Where was the safety? Shabazz rolled at the end of the play & came up furious with someone (didn't see who?). Do we know that wasn't the safety who screwed that up & Shabazz is just taking the beat for it?

Both guilty.

Safety was out of position but Shabazz definitely slowed to a jog for several steps and that's all it took to account for the separation needed to make the catch.

Plus Shabazz publicly said he gave that one up. Obvious on replay.

Is it possible he's just being a good teammate by not throwing someone under the bus?

I see NFL players let a guy run past them all the time when they are expected to have safety help. I don't blame Shabazz for that one. He ran the play as it was designed. He was noticeably pissed off at Thompson when the play ended.

Nope. No one ran "past him" - he was the deepest defender on the play. Shabazz was watching for the sack, QB scramble, throw away, etc. and by the time the ball was launched his guy was too far away to catch up. Not on Thompson here - the play was behind Thompson who was at the 10-yard line. This is not a shot at Shabazz - he played a great game, but that TD was on him. I think he would (and did) say the same.

Shabazz was looking for the sack and figuring he was out of the play, so he basically stopped. Oops! That's why you play until the whistle. By the way, anyone arguing that he figured on safety help is making a poor excuse. First, he was already deep in the end zone away from the roll, meaning if he was thinking of holding a zone area he was already far out of it (and jogging away from that side of th field. Second, with the QB rollout, the safeties should have been moving toward the rollout side of the field (away from Shabazz and away from help they could give him). All Shabazz had to do was play until the whistle and he'd have made an easy play. Lesson learned, hopefully.

We won despite that mental mistake. So I am glad it happened as I think it could be a great learning opportunity for the entire secondary. I'll guess that Shabazz won't let something like that happen again.

Shabazz doesn't deserve all the blame but as has been stated here he gave up on the play. There was some confusion in the secondary so some should certainly fall on the safety as well. Wonder if the coaches will talk with him about the pointing at his name celebration thing he does, most coaches tend to not like players doing stuff like that and would rather see them celebrating with their teammates.

This was a quarter back rolling to his right, throwing across his body deep over the middle. The chance of that being complete? Well in this case 100%. On a deep ball in the middle you should be able to play the ball in the air, if you are within five yards. I would bet practice this week will feature video of that play being run and rewind and run ....... And on the practice field you never give up, never. This will be a teaching tool.

Noticeably pissed off at himself. You are completely wrong.

Yeah, Shabazz was the deep man in that area. I think he was annoyed with himself, he publically took the blame and the three times I've seen it, the WR looked like his man (if he wasn't, what was Shabazz doing?).

We won and it's something that can be fixed, maybe it's a goo lesson to learn right now. But I don't think there is any deceptive to shelter Thompson's pride from criticism, it was just a bad play by Shabazz.
