The Secret of Bo Ryan's Success

Stiemsma was a guy who would have been more productive if he had
a) gone to a school that played zone or
b) redshirted
Bo demands bigs who can switch and guard in space. In the long run this probably helped Stiemsma as a player, but he did tend to draw a ton of fouls. He also had his 4 years mirror Butch. If he had done a 5th year, he would have been a 30 minute a game player and that team really could have used him. It was a strange 4 years for Stiemsma.

I do think midsized guys (6-5 to 6-9) tend to do better for Bo. He's had a run of busts (Gavinski, Markolf, Anderson) and I am very happy to see 6-8 guys like Hayes, Brown, and Happ coming in.

If I recall correctly Stiemsma also suffered from some depression and academic ineligibility.

Yes. He lost the 2nd semester of his soph year iirc. I recall an article about Badger trainer Henry Perez-Guerra being really instrumental in getting Greg help. Steimsma also came in as a frosh off a knee injury in high school.

Stiemsma's last season at Wisconsin suggested he could be outstanding with one more season and more minutes. He gave Bo a lot of good minutes his final season. He began controlling his fouls while developing both a mid-range push shot and a nice baby hook.

There are three differences between Bo and Tubby
1) Bo Recruits better talent
2) ALL of his recruited players can handle the ball and shoot, not either/or
3) His players are actually able to drive into the paint now and then because there aren't two bigs clogging up the lane at all times. Because of this threat of a drive, they also get more open 3's

2) Roster stability is key. Few transfers. Few legal or academic issues (nobody has zero, but Bo has taken fewer and fewer risks. Hell we beat out Yale and Brown for a kid from Exeter in the 2013 class). Many redshirts. Freshmen often wait their turn and don't play till they take care of the ball and know the defensive rules.

That's been one of our biggest problems without a doubt. Whether it's because of not liking Tubby, his coaching style and/or playing time, he's had a horrible time keeping guys around. We talk about it in football all the time and it's very critical for most programs to keep guys in your program for 4/5 years.

This is complete and total speculation but...maybe part of the problem with some guys transferring (Cobbs comes to mind) is that Tubby tells them what they want to hear about playing time in the recruiting process. "You'll have a good shot of playing a lot early on" and stuff like that. In Cobb's case, there was very little chance of that happening right away. Maybe Bo gets guys that understand they may have to redshirt and/or sit for a few years before they get a chance.

I could be completely wrong though too. No way of really knowing.

P.S. As much as I dislike Wisconsin and enjoy any jabs I can take towards the Badgers, I do appreciate some civil discussion once in awhile and appreciate yours and some of the other non trolls insight.

My guess is Tubby continually talks about the fast pace we will play and then we move along in the half court.

It just reflects the sorry state of college basketball. AAU teaching kids to play the wrong way and all real talent leaving for the NBA before they mature into great college players has made Wisconsin's success possible.

Well told.
