The posts tonight show why Gray should not play QB

I've always been in the camp that Gray should get some time (preferably a start or two late in the year) at QB. That changed tonight. If Gray struggles we'd be looking at hundereds of negative posts claiming "Gray sucks too" "We're effed, we've got no QB for next year" "Another one of Brews overrated recruits" etc, etc. There won't be any rational thought about Gray (or Alipate for that matter) getting his feet wet, it will be decided that he can't play.

I would guess the ratio of posts about the coaching search to posts about the tOSU game was more than 10:1 this week. Now we have people angry and acting like the Minnesota job is terrible because the Gophers were blown out by OHIO STATE? I am glad people are still angry about getting blown out, but if we (as a community) didn't care enough to even discuss this game prior to today. Why? Because everyone knew a win was near impossible to achieve with the combination of previous poor play and distracted (and perhaps dejected) players.

I think a lot of the frustration of tonight's game isn't the outcome, or even the blowout score, but rather that it felt like we were the Bad News Bears - missed FGs, blocked punt, a punt that went 11 yards, a punt return that showed little effort when OSU took it down to the 2 yard line after we missed a dozen or so tackles, fumble return for TD, the fact that it was a complete blowout and only one team put in their back-up, and not the team that probably needed it, etc. Not to mention the lack of effort that the radio guys focused on after the game.

I had a few Buckeye friends text me saying they never imagined we were this bad. We are, and we're getting worse.

Go Gophers!!

I think most of us would feel better *KNOWING* Gray sucks then to wonder week in & week out why he doesn't even get garbage time reps let alone anybody else not named Weber. The fact that he can't 1 snap when the team is down 40 points speaks volumes on the coaching. Hell, I'd be happy to seem him in there handing the ball off, he even got reps last year when we were down 38-0 against OSU & looked good on the scoring drive...

Or that he really is not able to play QB at the Big Ten level.

I'd much rather find out if Gray sucks now than three games into next season.
I'm so tired of watching Weber and the whole situation I may not tune in next week.

Y'all realize there's a reason Horton lost a billion games in a row at his last gig.

Only one way to find out right? That's my point...

Agree in some respect, but the coaches must feel he is not able to help the team from the QB position. If he were heads and shoulders better than Weber, I would guess that Brew would have played him to try and save his job instead of hitching his wagon to AW...

Yeah, the fact that Horton has also stuck with Weber leads me to believe Gray hasn't shown anything special in practice. Either way we're really just rearranging deck chairs on the titanic here. I'm not going to worry too much until the next coach comes in.

Without an experienced quarterback, think of how bad they will be next year. It isn't going to be pretty no matter who is the coach.

Eh, I actually don't think it will take that much to tread upon the fringes of competency. This staff is so infected with buffoons from top to bottom a real professional will clean a lot of things up in a hurry. It will take some time, no doubt, to compete with anyone of note but I expect some improvement right away just from having someone in charge who knows what he's doing.

Pryor was kinda sucky his first couple games playing but that's how he got better...through experience...that's how most players get better and mysteriously Weber has gotten worse...

Yes, Gray is literally Terrelle Pryor if only he could get some snaps.

Even though he was flawed he had enough other attributes to justify a spot on the field.

A lot of you guys are making my point. We can't find out if Gray "sucks" in the current environment, but that won't keep many people from claiming he does. We put Gray at QB and now we have one legitimate WR in McKnight and people will make rash judgments about whether or not Gray can play QB based on his performance leading a team in disarray. We also have no idea what type of offense the Gophers will run next year and whether Gray will be a better/worse fit at QB in that system compared to what the Gophers run now.

What is more important, Gray potentially getting ridiculed on a message board or getting reps in a game. If he is afraid to fail due to being criticized, then the QB position looks even more bleak for the future.

Logic please?

How in the world is what people on a message board think about Weber or Gray going to effect those players or the program? I don't understand the importance many of you give to guys ranting, or arm chair quarterbacking and just offering their opinions for their own therapy on a message board. It's a message board. We ain't making policy. My gosh if I'm missing the boat here and Maturi, the coaches and the players actually come here for their information we got real problems.

It's just fans talking who have no say to make any difference other than to feel better and share misery.

If we all think Gray sucks if he'd play, so what? If we all said, see, he shoulda been playing all along...so what? It matters not a lick. It opinions from people like me who don't matter other than to themselves and each other (in some instances)

Who is Gray gonna throw to? McKnight will be double-covered every play. We aren't deep enough at WR and we no longer run the kind of offense that's suited for him at QB. Making him into a dropback pocket passer is just a waste of his talent. If I were Gray, I would transfer, even if it means I have to sit out a year. He made a huge mistake coming here.

Hayo? Seriously, the combo of Lair & Eure along with McKnight would give him some options. Move Stoudermire back to WR... we need to see what Gray can do under center in the next 3-games... we need to see if there's a good chance, a bad chance, or no chance that he's the starter next year, and in 2012.

Doogie,

How do you think the OSU qb would have looked playing with Minnesota's talent, schemes, blocking, lack of running game, horrible special teams play and defense? He would have been running for his life at best. IF he would have been facing a defense as stout as the OSU defense, he would have been one battered, tattered, harried passer who would have been taking hits left and right and sacks until he would have gotten so flustered he would have stunk the joint out the way he did against the Badgers a few weeks ago.

This is NO time to test Gray under fire and with no real offensive support. I agree with some of the comments that would worry about destroying Gray and pretty much forcing him to contemplate transferring at the end o this year. His future is NOT here right now as a qb. It MAY be here, depending upon who the new coach is, what style of offense he will run, etc.

There is nothing to provide the kind of support he would need right now to even have a chance to succeed right now.

Bring in the new coach. Gray will have time to decide what he wants to do once he is armed with the information of knowing who his coach will be, what kind of offense he will have to learn, what that coach plans to do to counter the lack-luster running game, to transform the offensive line and to come up with some excellent running backs and receivers.

There is more than enough speculation about Gray's status as a potential qb right now. Not everyone believes he has what it takes under anything but the best of circumstances.

I don't know the answer. However all the coaches who have worked with him at the U of M have not felt that he has been ready to go.

Wait until the new coach is named. We all just have to get through the rest of the 2010 season. We play three pretty fair teams. Now is not the time to throw Gray to the wolves. And this crowd is one mighty nasty crowd when it comes to qb's.

If I can actually hurt players through my posting I have a lot more work to do.

Denard Robinson doesn't do much throwing for Michigan. Somehow they scored 31 points at Penn State last night. A good QB does not always have to throw the ball. Good athletes make things happen. Give your best players the damn ball and see what happens!!

I can't wait for him to play! I'm telling all you Pro-Weber & anti-Gray types now that you will all be jumping on his bandwagon when the opportunity comes. Watch. Can't get any worse than the state were in. And no its not conceding one bit when the job is not getting done at the position now, etc.

It's not so much that I'm anti-gray as I'm wary of him getting killed in these last few games. Weber can be the sacrificial lamb.

lol nice! Wasn't calling out you Khaliq. You have some good points.

There would be nothing to be gained by moving Gray back to QB right now. Now if it meant the difference between 3 wins to end the season or 0 wins to end the season, I say make the switch, but it doesn't -- so let it be.

Gray will be coached up by the new staff during the spring. He will get the experience and Gopher football will move on.

We need to understand the kids are not trying to lose, but have had many obstacles to overcome. They will have a fresh start next year. I just feel bad for the Seniors who will be ending their careers this way.

Weber has earned the right to finish the year. Give him the chance to do so with out so much negativity.

Stoudemire is better where he is at, he is an extremely quick guy with bad ball skills, he should have been playing DB for awhile now. That said, for the rest of this season we could easily go with McKnight, Allen, Kiese, Barker, Eure, and Lair for the rest of the season, and even go with that crew next season.

We aren't in any position to be moving Stoudemire from DB back to WR.

Or that he really is not able to play QB at the Big Ten level.

We've already proven that statement applies to Weber. Yeah, he'll make one or two throws a game where he looks like Joe Montana, but for every one of those there are two or three that hit the ground 3' in front of the receiver or sail 6' over his head.

Agreed. Add a healthy Brandon Green to the mix at WR & we should be fine. I think we're going to be horrified how bad Gray is at QB, but I think we have to do it to avoid a full on, fan mutiny. Human sacrifice. The only downside I see is letting the cat out of the bag now could kill season ticket sales for next year. Maybe they want to make you buy next years tix if you want to see Gray at QB?
