The Other Side of the Beer Argument

I don't like a school contradicting themselves and trying to pretend they are righteous and all-caring. I especially don't like a school claiming they are doing something because of their principles and mission... then doing a complete 180 because their product isn't good enough to bring in the desired number of fans.

Stupid post. The U would prefer the same alcohol policy as everyone else has. They aways have. How is that a change in position???????????

The suites were already built when the state legislture did a complete 180.
Someone has to pay the note on the building. Again... the f'n suites were already built. They have to be paid for. It's that simple. The legislature certainly didn't offer to step-up to the plate to cover gap in the projected vs. actual difference related to their dumbass policy that made premium seating less valuable (which they suddenly and inexplicably forced on the U).

They forced this policy on the U. There is no other option. This is the direct resulkt of a horse-$h!+ MN state legislature whose memberes are unable to understand the issures they are voting on.

I also don't like stupid rules that help to put on the all-caring front (such as only having two locations that serve beer & wine to the general public currently). They'll likely change it in the future and it makes sense to change it - so change it. Stop trying to act like the good guy when you're not. You want to make money and are willing to go "against your principles and the school's mission" - fine, I get it. But save me the sugar coating nonsense and understand that some people won't like it and some people will have negative experiences as a direct result of the decision. The two locations are arguably not convenient to the general public even though the law requires and the limited locations absolutely do encourage double fisting (which does, on average, result in quicker consumption).

You understand how political this process was right? They obviously had to do attach strings to service of alcohol in TCF to get it approved and moved through the process. This is how reality works "brah".

I also know people act like dumb***es sometimes. If the family that wrote a letter had a bad experience, that's unfortunate. I don't find their story to be shocking or amazing or far fetched in the slightest... if they want to write a letter, go ahead. Big deal. If it's that bad, then stop going to games. That's what they did.

The bolded summed up what he should have done if it bugged him that much. The thing that bugs me about this guy's story the most (not to mention its ridiculous slant and loaded language) is that he took the time to get on his soapbox and write to the Star Tribune bashing the U for executing what is by all official accounts a successful roll out of an already controversial program. If he had gotten a flask aided mixed rum and coke in a stadium soft drink cup spilled on him would he be writing a diatribe to the Trib about it? No. He wanted the negative association with beer being served and he wanted to be obnoxious about it.

I also don't have a big problem with a response of, "those people are being babies. wah wah, don't go to a football game if you can't handle some rowdy behavior."... but the "these people are lying, these people have worked at xyz company/government, are making $X a year, they go to Twins games - I checked the lady's Twitter picture, he's running for office, I don't want stupid people like this at games, etc" crap is sad.

Ok I'll address the square comment, and I don't throw that term around lightly by the way. Sorry if it bugs you, but this guy just seems like he wouldn't be any fun. I don't like it when the Gophers lose a fan, but if they are going to lose them let's just say I'm not losing sleep over John Gunyou not going to TCF anymore. From what I gather he's a third down sitting, no fun having, I'd rather be at a meeting of the Parks Department kind of guy.

Again the blame is misplaced. It's not the beer sales that are at fault. It's the rudeness and misbehavior that's the problem. The cause of that misbehavior -- whether it's intoxication or an undisciplined childhood -- are not relevant. Stop the misbehavior through enforcement.

I can say that I've been to no fewer than 300 sporting events in my life at major stadiums where beer was served. I can say that in all the times I've been to many, many different venues - I can NEVER remember having beer spilled on me, not once. I will say I remember my wife having beer spilled on her once. I don't remember a single fight breaking out in the stands at any event I've ever been to...ever. Sure, I've been around some rowdy people who were overserved, but never anything like this guy describes. And, to think, it happened at TCF Bank Stadium, a place that most people believe isn't rowdy enough.

Yeah, my experience has been similar. I've been going to professional baseball and football games since I was a kid, as well as other on-campus sports (football mostly) where alcohol was not for sale in the stadium but readily available outside (or snuck inside). I've also been to international soccer games inside and outside the U.S.

In all that time I can remember exactly one beer being spilled on me. I, along with several others, were going for a home run ball, and one of the guys dropped his beer, and it splashed on several of us. I was a kid, so I thought it was cool.

Three spilled beers in one game? Hard to believe.

Similarly, while I have seen fights a number of times (mostly at NFL games), I have never been nor have I ever seen anyone threaten to rearrange anyone's face. Again, hard to believe it happened once, much less "the better part of an entire game."

I think the writer has an agenda, and is at the very least exaggerating what happened.

Why wouldn't they be telling the truth? No reason not to believe them.

Because they don't want alcohol sold at the Bank so they make up a ridiculous story to try to convince people it's a bad idea and try to pressure the U to eliminate it again.

1. People around us (maybe including myself) have been hammered for the history of the stadium, even before beer sales. People around us (maybe including myself) have consumed alcohol in the stadium, even before beer sales.

2. As mentioned above, even if two fisting, they didn't start sober and end up fighting because of beer sold in the stadium. Besides, drunk a-holes will be drunk a-holes, with or without beer sales.

3. I saw many cops Saturday, not to mention ushers. Even if they didn't want to flag one down from their seat (scared of repercussions), they could have easily found one in the concourse and explained what was going on.

4. Honestly, anytime I've seen any sort of argument in the stands the cops or ushers are there faster than I could call.

5. And if they really are season ticket holders, they're letting one bad experience cause them to give up? Were they season ticket holders in the Dome? Did they have similar experiences there???

Nothing about this passes the smell test.

Why wouldn't they be telling the truth? No reason not to believe them. They should/could have went out and got some security if they felt threatened. The third time they were doused should have done the trick. Selling their tickets seems to be quite an over-reaction. Reading the letter though, they seemed to be so "ticked-off" about the decision to allow alcohol to be sold in the stands in the first place that it was probably only a matter of time before something pushed them "over the edge".

Wished they would have told security and then gutted it out until next year. The Wisconsin game would have given them a much "wetter" story to tell.

Biggest reason not to take at face value: one of them is running for public office. If this became a news story, might help with name recognition.

I do not have any direct evidence, of course. This might just be a concerned citizen who happened to have what appears to be a very rare experience at TCF.

This guy is completely right. A kid that was so drunk he could barely stand puked right in my row a couple years ago at the Northwestern game. I am completely convinced this never would have happened if he wouldn't have been able to buy beer at TCF Bank Stadium last week.

By golly, I think you've hit on it. We'll know for sure if Mitt shows up to watch the game Saturday.

blood money

I didn't kill anyone for the money to sit in the center, I earned it! Sorry, that kind of bothered me. Giving back to the U for my nice education, I think.

As for the topic, been a Twins season ticket holder for 10 years. I've seen some over-served people, but never had 3 beers spilled on me during a game.

I drink sometimes, but do so in moderation. I have had very few problems with drunks at UNLV football games where they have served beer and mixed drinks for years. There were however some obnoxiously drunk Wash St fans last week. Lots of 4 letter words around my 7 year old daughter, and many could not figure out their seat locations as people had to repeatedly have ushers escort them to their correct seats (often swearing as they were being moved). They weren't terrible, but we left at the end of the 3rd quarter. I can usually resist giving unrequested advice, but for those people who become bigger a$$holes when drunk, they should consider drinking less, no matter if its while tailgating or in the stadium.

Dear Mr. Gunyou,

Thank you for writing this letter to the editor. I usually abstain from voting in elections where I have no clear information about the candidates, but your hyperbolic letter including (very likely) outright falsehoods gave me enough information about you to cast a vote for your opponent.

I looked up my ballet just to see if I'd have the pleasure of voting against him but no such luck. I have different candidates for my district. Please report back to see how the Outraged Gunyou does in his bid to rule the world, of trails... in his district.

I didn't remember why I subconsciously picked the other candidate today. This was why

You're a dancer! Just like Rodgers.

I hope he wins, so the public in wherever he represents can watch him make a total ass of himself.
