Defense, defense, defense. The hardest thing to recruit for, especially when you're at the middle/end of the gravy train.

It's often said that the difference between the elites and the middle of the road teams is on the lines. Watching N. Illinois, I have little doubt that their skill players are on par with almost any middle BCS school. The challenge will be on the lines. I have little doubt, given our location, that we will be able to recruit an adequate offensive line, but what about D? Can he do what Gutey, Wacker, Mason (outside of '99) and Brew couldn't?

I like what Kill said about having 2 difference makers on D and building a well coached, disciplined defense around them. I think that's basically what Iowa's D is every year. But can he do it?

I'd say the obvious challenge for Kill is winning football games.

Thank you

But I was looking for more of an opinion on Kill's ability to recruit/coach a successful Big Ten defense. Scoring points (pre-Brew/Weber) has never really been the problem. To win those games you speak of, Can Kill build a D?

This thread brings to mind coaches stating the obvious.

My favorite ...the venerable Dan Reeves before his Broncos team was smashed by the Giants in a Super Bowl long ago......"In orderfor us to be successful we need to move the football."

Dan ...my brothers and I have joked about this for years...especially when that very week...you didn't do muc 'moving of the football'.

Thanks for trip down memory lane.

Seeing those guys on NIUs D throttle Fresno.....I have no doubt the existing cast will play at a much higher level.

I too hope the recruiting along with coaching can yield winning seasons Kand much more than 7-5 some years.

I think it is important to focus on everything. Heck, in 2009 I would say it was our offense that held us back from being a much better team.

One thing about Kill's teams is that he has seemed to rapidly improve on the defensive end. His defense his first season at Northern Illinois was probably the best defense in the MAC (out of nowhere).

This is where I love the Kill and Gary Patterson are good friends. Patterson has done a great job of building an awesome D at TCU. From my understanding he has done it by taking guys who were great athletes and really thought of themselves as offensive players but they just weren't quite good enough for the helmet schools. Patterson brings them in moves them to D and look what he gets.

Kill will need to get our players into better football shape. Elite athletic shape. S&C and nutrition have to change. We need more speed with the mass to kick ass. I believe we have athletes available to him for that. They need to be coached up and schooled in his schemes so that they play fast and aggressive. He can do that. Kills complaint about the existing roster is the lack of depth. He says he can't not practice the way he wants to and needs to in order in win without more depth. He says NIU was in the same condition when he got there and it wasn't until 2010 he had the roster in shape to practice winning football.

Obviously he can't fix that in time for spring practice. How much progress with JUCOs and the little time remaining in 2011 recruiting before fall practice?

Will it take 3 years here too? I hope not.

Coach Kill seems to know what needs to be done, what he wants to do, and he has done it before. Something that Coach Brew seemed to be lost at.

Two parts here...

1) Kill's ability to recruit/coach a successful BT defense? I say yes, his history shows he can recruit and coach up players to be successful at every level he has been at so far, why stop now?

2) CAN Kill build a D? See part one.

p.s. A key unasked question is WILL HE? Time will tell on that. He and his staff know a hell of a lot more than I do, so I am turning the entire plan over to them. I will take care of making sure that there is plenty of cold beer in the fridge and defy anyone to find my fridge empty. That I can handle, and Coach Kill has turned that job over to me. I like a Coach who delegates proper authority and knows our individual strengths and weaknesses.

GO GOPHERS!!!!!

Are you bringing in four or five star cans or bottles to fill the fridge?

During the regular recruiting season I concentrate on 3* recruits. During the Holiday Season I concentrate only on 4* and 5* candidates such as Leinenkugels Holiday 12-packs with 4 different varieties of Leinies. And they get scholarshipped in a hurry. :)

I cant even force myself to buy leinenkugels and the grandaughter of the owner was the sweetheart at my best friends frat at the U. She was pretty cool but I hate giving Wisconsin any of my money

So you are sending your money to South Africa...is that better than Wisconsin? I find it a dead heat of horribleness..
Buy Summit or Schell's...Think Globally, Drink Locally.

Stick with the three S's and you be fine, Shell's,Summit, and Surly. All fine Minnesota companies.

All of the Surly stuff is too high on the IBU for me...tastes all like IPA to me. Lots of good choices with Shell's Summitt...etc. now if only I lived in a place where I could buy it. North TX...not one of them.

I can find draft fat tire which is yummy. In bottles not as good.

Beer is Beer. C'mon my friends. ENJOY!!! Let us not argue.

I've spent a lot of days and nights at the chalkboard lately and I think I've finally found out a successful equation for our defense Kill + Beal = Win. I'm hoping my math is correct.

For beer check out fulton, originally from minnie but sadly have a brewery in sconnie right now but I will end with good news that being they are building a brewery back in the cities!

I love the attitude here...We can take any potential thread and turn it into best beers. You guys are great. Beer rules!!!

Go Gophers!!!!!
