Hope the off week didn't help them.

SAN JOSE -- Don't say the words "week off" around the San Jose State football team.

"It's not really a week off," junior defensive tackle Travis Raciti said. "We get the weekend off."

And really, it's just Saturday off. The team will be back at work Sunday.

The Spartans aren't necessarily licking their wounds either after Saturday's 34-13 loss to Stanford. The performance actually has SJSU feeling encouraged as it begins to prepare for its first true road trip -- next week's game at Big Ten Conference foe Minnesota..

The Spartans' offensive line may be undergoing a bit of a shake-up. After starting the first two games at center, Nicholas Kaspar practiced Thursday at right guard, the position he started all 13 games at last season.

Junior David Peterson worked with the starters at center, with Reuben Hasani taking the second-team center reps. Keith Bendixen worked with the first team at left guard, with Ryan Jones suited up but not participating in team drills.

Television: The San José State-Minnesota game will be televised by ESPN2. Beth Mowins calls the play-by-play. Joey Galloway provides analysis. Paul Carcaterra is the sideline reporter. Air time is 9:00 a.m. (PDT)/11:00 a.m. (CDT).

San José State-Minnesota series: The series is tied, 1-1. The two teams are playing each other for the first time since September 12, 1992 when the Spartans posted a 39-30 win in the Metrodome. Minnesota's win in the series was a 26-20 victory in the Metrodome on September 14, 1991.

Do you know the way?

I don't like the broadcast names.

And Galloway is just as bad. This is the worst broadcast team around (well except AggieVision, but that isn't a real station).

Oh thank god I won't be watching it on TV. Oh praise jeebus. Thats a broadcast team that forces you to mute the tv and sync up with the radio.

Reshuffled o-line after 2 games, was there an injury or just poor performance? Either way, I am now expecting big things from our d-line.

Looks like it might be time to "open it up" and throw it around a little.

SAN JOSE -- It is tough for San Jose State to know what to expect this week when it takes its first true trip to face Minnesota on Saturday.

The Golden Gophers (3-0) have question marks stretching from the health of their coach and several key players to the strength of their nonconference schedule.

One thing the Spartans know is that they will face a big, physical team with a power running game, qualities typically found in a Big Ten Conference opponent.

"I'm excited to go back to Big Ten country," SJSU coach Ron Caragher said. "We know it's going to be a physical game."

The status isn't known of Minnesota coach Jerry Kill, who suffered an epileptic seizure Saturday during a 29-12 home victory over Western Illinois. He was resting comfortably at home soon after the game.

"It's my understanding that he's in good health," Caragher said. "I know that was a scary incident. Certainly hope he's back in full health and on the opposite sideline. I hear great things about what he brings to the game."

SJSU is preparing to face an opponent it expects to be similar to Stanford, which overpowered the Spartans in a 34-13 victory Sept. 7. Caragher noted the Gophers' offensive linemen, who are big and athletic and help produce a strong running game that sets up play-action passes.

Minnesota has passed on 28 percent of its offensive plays. Quarterback Philip Nelson, whose status is unknown because of a hamstring injury, is the team's leading rusher. Running backs Rodrick Williams and David Cobb are averaging over 7 yards per carry while filling in for starter Donnell Kirkwood, who injured his ankle in the season opener but might be back this week.

Even if Nelson is healthy enough to play, backup Mitch Leidner is expected to get playing time. He played well in relief of Nelson on Saturday, completing 7 of 8 passes for 105 yards and rushing 17 times for 64 yards..

Beth Mowins and Joey Galloway would be reason enough to make the 5+ hour drive up and go to the game, even if I didn't have tix.

Saturday can't come soon enough!

I am going to the game, but I like to watch the replay on Sunday on BTN2Go. I guess I'll have to put up with Mowins for that.

Galloway makes things up as he goes when doing Gophers football broadcasts.

The worst part about getting a Mowins/ Galloway pairing on any Gophers away games broadcasts is the
constant "pulling things out of his butt" statements that Galloway makes. It's like the guy does zero research,
and watches zero film of previous games from this year when broadcasting Gophers games.
From the constant mis-pronouncing of Gophers players names to the the digs at the Gophers offensive and defensive calls
and allignments, he is a pain to listen to. He is definately an ANTI Gophers guy for a former Big 10 player.
Glad I am going to be at the game and will not be DVR'ing this one.
No need to listen to Galloway ramble on about nothingness, hard to believe he is even on ESPN.
Our own Ron Johnson put's Galloway to shame he should be the one on ESPN not Galloway, at least
he would do some actual research and put effort in to the broadcast games he would work.
Galloway is a lazy broadcast analyst.

Mowins and Galloway did the Iowa game last year correct? If so, yes they are both brutal. I do remember Galloway being especially bad and knowing nothing about the team. I might have to mute the tv.

Don't know who Mowins is but it's my first live Gopher game and I don't have to hear her.

Does anyone know where I can listen to the game up at Battle Lake/Ottertail area? Pls help. Tks in advance.....I might be forced to listen to them........Crap

Isn't Galloway the one that went on and on about Kill meeting with the team at halftime on the field before they went into the locker room?

My favorite was the "Walk-ons don't even get the same socks" take.

*facepalm*

Yes he made a big stink about the coach Kill sideline huddle during one of the broadcast last year.
How can the players hear him, what a waste of time?

Yes. It's not hard to figure out that Kill had a history of doing this. Any due diligence by him would have discovered this.

I don't think Kill does this anymore. It went back to his days teaching at lower levels where teams would use the same tunnel. They would lose a few minutes waiting for one team to get through the tunnel. That's not much of an issue anymore, I suppose.

I guess so, but when watching with hindsight, the stupid comments and inane observations become more comical and less infuriating. At least for me, when I do a re-watch.

that 26-20 victory over SJSU was my first Gopher game in the metrodome...

hope we can pull off a similar victory... :cool02:

For all of those in the area, if you don't like the tv announcers, then go to the game. I have a friend that is flying in from Az. just to go to the game, so yes it does happen.

San Jose State Assistant Coach

Nice story about Neil Parry, the linebackers coach for San Jose State.

SAN JOSE -- Some members of San Jose State's football team had no clue the player featured in a display in the training center was the same Neil Parry who coaches linebackers.

The same guy who 10 years ago Wednesday made football history by playing in a game with a prosthetic leg as a member of the Spartans' punt return team.

Parry certainly doesn't advertise it. He never wears shorts on the practice field. Heck, sometimes Parry forgets what an inspiration he became by playing three years after suffering a compound fracture during a game that led to a partial amputation of his right leg.

When new coach Ron Caragher asked his graduate assistant to address the team at the start of fall camp, Parry, now 35, hadn't realized a decade had slipped past.

But given a chance to reflect on what it meant to play in eight games in 2003, gain national attention and meet Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Parry smiles.

"I'd do it all over again if I had the chance," he said recently after helping his players prepare for a game Saturday at Minnesota.

Yet, the heartache of losing his leg and glorious return to the field seemed like an out-of-body experience to a father of three who is earning a master's degree in communication.

"I don't remember life as an able-bodied person," Parry said. "I'm just me..
