Bummer but not the end of the world IMO and a little happenstance plays into it.

But that stat has an extra kick in the pants there with AK.

But a sunny side with Iowa ;)

I renew my objection to this general statement with the fact that ... you call the plays the players can make. We saw last year ... couldn't make those plays.

If anything USC who ran for 6+ yards a carry against us a few weeks ago ... and inexplicably chose to throw time and again should tell you what happens when you try to FORCE passing into happening.

Last year if we had tried to force the offense to pass a lot. I don’t know if we win a game.

Mitch Leidner passed for 250 yards or more in four straight games to tie Mike Hohensee
who did it in 1982.
Leidner in 2015:
Nebraska 301 yards passing
Michigan 317 yards passing
Ohio St. 281 yards passing
Iowa 259 yards passing

Weber had 250 yards or more 14 times in his career...school record
He passed for 300 yards 6 times and 400 yards once
Weber also owns a Big Ten record for most career offensive plays (1,992)
 

And NW who throws hasn’t done it since earlier in 2022 (Hilinski in sept). They also haven’t had a 200 yd rusher since 2021 (MN 4x with Taylor, Nubin and Mox2). Idk why we fall in love with 300 yards passing so much. Often it means you’re losing like Morgan throwing for 368 when we lost to Iowa and 296 when we lost to Wisconsin in 2019

People gave Leidner an unfairly hard time as a passer. He was treated like a tackle taking snaps sometimes (his brother actually was a tackle) but he was about the same level passing as other multi-year starters here, and quite a bit better than a few others.

Fleck's style with a lead is so run-heavy that any QB to do it under him is going to need some heavy offense from the other side. Gopher D improvements have hurt the number of big passing games because there's less chasing. Patrick Mahomes has become a below-average fantasy football QB because the Chiefs D has become very good.

I think we'll see a 300 yard passing game before the year is over. Maryland is dead last in the B1G vs the pass and weather should be nice Saturday. Maybe the streak ends then.

When was the last time a Gopher QB had a 300 yard passing day? (ALMOST 700 DAYS!!!!)

When was the last time a Minnesota kicker made 5 field goals in a game?

How long has it been since one of our runners gained 200 yards in a game? Seems like ages ago!

I can't remember the last Gopher defender to have 3 sacks in a game! Oh, my!

Does anyone recall the last time the Minnesota special teams produced a blocked kick for a TD?!

And the final question: Do these 'streaks' really matter?

I'd argue that this list of 300 yard passers is indicative of offensive success and very much does matter in the grand scheme of winning football games.

The last 300 yard passing game the Gophers won the Axe.

The best passing season in Gopher history was in 2019 and we won 11 games. This stat very much matters.

A balanced offense and being able to attack the weakness of a defense is ultimately what's important. Need to be able run and pass. I wouldn't get super hung up on the number 300 though as that's an arbitrary standard.

Scoring more points than the opponent is a better indicator.

Still bugs me that Weber and Decker never got to play for Mason in the new stadium.

1) Maryland (1-3, 4-3)
2) Indiana (4-0, 7-0)
3) Oregon (4-0, 7-0)
4) Washington (2-2, 4-3)
5) Ohio State (2-1, 5-1)
6) USC (1-4, 3-4)
7) Penn State (3-0, 6-0)

If there's a direct connection between more yards passing per game and winning, I'm not just not seeing it.

On this leaders list, I'm seeing some really, really good teams, some average teams and some teams with sub-par records in the B1G. In fact, I'd guess most people would agree that Team #1 on the passing yards per game list, Maryland, is no world-beater. Their current overall record is exactly the same as Minnesota's, and their B1G record is worse than ours. Maryland has had a consistent record of throwing the ball well in recent years, and yet throwing for 300 per game hasn't led them to the Promised Land.

That being said, we'll see FleckBall vs. Maryland's vaunted air attack soon enough. Fingers crossed that it goes our way!

I get your sentiment, but if you do it across the NCAA it tells a much different story. You could run the same sort of list for rushing yards too, but any time your offensively putting up big #'s you're putting yourself in a great position to win.

I'd rather rush for 300 yards a game. The teams averaging that (Army) haven't lost this year. Extend to 250 yards and it's 34-9 (79%).

500 yards of offense? 27-6 (82%).

In things that surprise no one, yeah moving the ball you win more. I think what people are saying is 300 is not some magic number. You can also throw for a lot of yards when you're getting shit housed (Utah State) or giving up a ton of points (North Texas, ranked 122nd in PA/game).

really, you're probably looking more at "efficiency" as being a better way of looking at all these stats. Top 10 in QB rating (Army, Navy, Indiana, Miami, PSU, OSU, Ole Miss, UNLV, Oregon, Vandy) have lost a total of 6 games this year.

In short, you just need to do something well/do it efficiently. I wouldn't get so caught up with the raw number

I think the thing with Leidner is that his mechanics were so bad and Kill and Company never really seemed to bother to fix them. That led to a lot of inconsistency in his game and sometimes the criticism was harsh. He did what Kill wanted him to do and I guess we can leave it at that. He did have some good games as both a runner and passer.
 

On a plus note, McCord for Syracuse threw for 300 yards last night and definitely helped his team not win. 312 yards 5ints with 3TDs all to the wrong team
