It may be a conspiracy theory ... but I subscribe to the idea that Coyle wanted to hire "his own guy" for football, and saw a golden but very narrow window of opportunity to pursue Fleck, at the time.


"...all that glitters may not be gold..." Time will tell.
 

I really started getting into Gopher football during the Mason-era (due to me being a child previously). I loved some of Mason's teams. Brewster was obviously a disaster, I don't think anyone argues that.

Claeys would have been fine for a couple years. I think players liked him, he is a good person, etc. but I'm not sure he could have ever sustained or furthered the success of Kill. His lack of recruiting prowess was evident even after a short time.

Fleck is a work in progress. He is building the program the best way he can--recruiting. I don't subscribe that stars and recruit rankings are all that matters, but the teams that fare well in recruiting year after year after year typically do well on the field as well. I am hopeful it works that way here.
