The Gazette: Hawkeyes' sole focus this week is bringing home bacon

The time, place and situation for the Hawkeyes to be playing Minnesota almost couldn’t be better.

Here’s what’s at work against the Gophers when they enter Kinnick Stadium Saturday night.

1. Emotionally, they might be somewhat drained after two straight losses against powerful foes, a gut-wrencher in Minneapolis against Michigan, and Saturday night’s hard-fought 28-14 loss at Ohio State.

2. It’s a night game, Iowa is 9-0, and the environment in Kinnick will be as electrically charged as any third rail.

3. It doesn’t matter they are one of just six unbeatens left in FBS and they’ll be no lower than seventh in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings. Focus should be no problem whatsoever for the Hawkeyes.

They lost 51-14 at Minnesota last year. It was a humiliation, the underlining moment of their mediocre season. They gave up 291 rushing yards to the Gophers. They were outgained by over a 2-to-1 ratio. They were behind 35-0 at halftime.

Hawkeye Nation are looking for a 50 to 10 game. They are so confident it makes one sick. Lets hope we are are healthy and show then the quality of a team we are,

Not true. Iowa scored a TD on their first drive of the game and we were down 7-0.

If we're healthy, we'll make a game of it. There is one post at the Iowa site that posits that Minnesota has redirected its historic rivalry with Wisconsin towards Iowa recently because we haven't had much success competing with Wisconsin and occasionally win against Iowa. It may be that our revenue sports success against Wisconsin has been limited recently, but we still lead the football series 59-57-8. And we have more than occasionally beaten Iowa. We lead the football series 62-44-2. And I can personally assure the poster that the Minnesota-Iowa rivalry is anything but a recent phenomenon and hardly a one way passion. I was a student a the U in the late 50s and early 60s and the Minnesota-Iowa rivalry was very intense and very mutual in those days. I especially recall the 1960 game. Iowa came into old Memorial Stadium ranked #1 in the country and Minnesota was ranked #2. It was a very physical and intense game that Minnesota won 27-10. I recall one pre-game headline asking the question, "Whose Number 1"? As the game ended, Minnesota fans were screaming, "We're Number 1", while pumping an arm with a single digit extended. That since has become a familiar victory chant, but I believe this was the first time it was used anywhere.
