Since 2000, the #1 team in the final RPI ratings has gone on to win the national championship only once (Duke 2001). The following final RPI ratings have won national titles since the turn of the millenium:
#5 twice (UConn 2004, Kansas 2008)
#6 twice (North Carolina 2005, Florida 2007)
#1 once (Duke 2001)
#3 once (Maryland 2002)
#9 once (Syracuse 2003)
#13 once (Michigan State 2000)
#15 once (Florida 2006)
So the smartest money this year would be on #5 Oklahoma or #6 Michigan State.
The others five teams in the running. ... #1 Duke, #3 North Carolina, #9 Utah, #13 Villanova or #15 Florida State.
