The Drive for (at minimal) the #10 Seed in Chicago

Question: Could it be beneficial for the Gophers to play on Wednesday to add one win to the record? For example, if the Gophers were to finish something like 7-11, would it necessarily do any good to get the bye? Could it be worth it to pick up the extra win over Northwestern (not a given, I know) before getting into the more competitive B1G teams? Or would it be better in terms of postseason to have the bye in hand and hope it helps towards a deep run?

The Gophers don't just need wins, they need quality wins. The only thing beating a Northwestern or a Rutgers does is add a road/neutral win. The Gophers only have 4 wins of any substance on their resume -- #23 Georgia, #47 Illinois, #71 Purdue, #98 Western Kentucky -- and only 1 of those occurred away from Williams Arena.

Any hopes of getting a NCAA bid without the benefit of a BTT championship, will require at least 1 win over Wisconsin. The good news is we have at least 2 opportunities to do so. Winning in Madison would be most preferable.

If you're playing that opening weekend, that one extra win over another bottom Big Ten team just adds a bit of noise to the equation and that's about it.
The Gophers non-conference schedule of playing two teams with sub 300 RPI and 4 more teams sub 200, you're kicking yourself out of the tournament if you get 10-11 losses.

13. (114) Rutgers (2-9)
14. (157) Northwestern (1-9)

Adding the schedules to some of these teams. I find this years B1G schedule hard to predict so who knows what will happen.

At Michigan State will be a key game. That's their most likely chance to win on the road.

Looking at the remaining schedules, I'm not sure that Nebraska has another win on it.

Through February 9

In place of the "road to 22 wins", we'll do this in its place. The goal now for the Gophers is to avoid Big Ten Tournament Wednesday. Next update after tonight's (Tuesday) games. Wisconsin beating Nebraska would certainly help the Gophers. Hurts to say it, but "Go Badgers".

Thanks SS. Looking at the upcoming schedules, I fear that the worst possible result is going to occur -- we are going to pass Nebraska and Michigan, but nobody else, and end up as the #9 seed in the tournament. Instead of a bunch of winnable games, we would get one bye, one winnable but not "move the needle" game, and then we're almost certainly eliminated by Wisconsin.

Again, I think the real goal should be to avoid the 8/9 seeds. But given the apparent quality of our team, it's probably a moot point.

A 3rd shot at Wisconsin in Chicago, if it comes to pass

A good point, but I would look at it the other way. If the Gophers get to #9, that means they would've won at least one game down the stretch they weren't supposed to. Even if they do that, their resume is going to be short. I would look at it as (assuming Gophers win the 8-9 game), what better way to help a resume that sorely needs help & to impress the Selection Committee than beating a potential #1 seed, perhaps even for the 2nd time?

Not so concerned about who the Gophers play in their first game, just want it to be Thursday. Whether they play #13 or #14 on Wednesday or #7 or #8 on Thursday, I look at it as the Gophers are good enough & bad enough to lose to anyone they play. The 1st opponent doesn't matter, with one exception. ... I want to avoid Illinois at all costs. The Illini have had some great moments in the United Center at the BTT, and it would be a virtual road game for the Gophers.

Well, if we tie with Nebraska, I believe the first tie-breaker is total score, and if that is the case, we win the tie-breaker.

Well, if we tie with Nebraska, I believe the first tie-breaker is total score, and if that is the case, we win the tie-breaker.

First tiebreaker is head to head. Split
Second tiebreaker is how you did against the best team. (Wisc). If we both go 0-2, then it goes to the next team...
Hard to say who that will be at this point and what both team's records will be.

I'd much rather we get a 10-11 seed than get a 8 or 9 seed. Minimal seperation between 2 and 11 in the Big Ten, and a potential three or four game run from us is expontentially more possible without Wisconsin waiting for us on Friday.

If we play on the first day and beat NW or someone, it still counts as another win for us, even if not against a good opponent. Maybe that could help if we are right on the bubble.

Exactly. A win counts as a win. I see playing an easier opponent as a blessing, especially being able to draw a team like Michigan State or Purdue (a 5 or 6 seed) in the second day. Of course, I wouldn't object towards winning 4 and getting, say, a 7 seed either! :D
I'm glad the Gophers are making things fun now, at the very least.

If we play on the first day and beat NW or someone, it still counts as another win for us, even if not against a good opponent. Maybe that could help if we are right on the bubble.

Problem is, if you're going to be in the 11 spot, you need Nebraska and Michigan both to win a couple so you essentially have the #9, #10, and #11 team all with equal records (like8-10) and you get the short end of the straw needing to play the extra game.

But I would think in that theory it only helps if you get to at least 8-10.

Then you could have Wednesday win.
Thursday win.
Friday win.
Loss.

Put you at 11-11.

Or
Win
Win
Win
Win
Loss

That would get you to 12-11, but by then your RPI would be pretty respectable from winning the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th BTT games.

Now we're just not being realistic... Getting an 8/9 seed means we're winning 1 BTT game tops. Getting a 10-11 seed leaves the door open to 2-3-4 BTT wins.

The way I look at it, what is the most likely path to the NCAA tourney (as unlikely as that may be)? I think we're more likely to win 3 BTT games in a row as the #10 seed or 4 in a row as #11 (either of which I believe would get us in), than to upset Wisconsin in our second game as the #8 or #9 seed. As the 8/9 seed coming in, I don't think a first round BTT win would get us in the tourney and I'd give us virtually 0% chance of beating Wisconsin on a neutral floor, whereas I think we are capable of winning a string of games vs any other B1G teams.

Obviously it's a very weird year for the conference with one great team and about 8 or 9 very similar teams.

You do have a point regarding Illinois...another tough matchup especially considering the venue.

Will update this tomorrow morning. Gophers have moved into the #10 spot by virtue of the tiebreaker (Gophers' win over Purdue) over Nebraska.

Really the only question at this point is

But can we shock Kentucky? :cool:Agree with you on the above. It's all possible...makes it fun but we are a long shot. Then again, maybe we continue our run. 3 in a row... 5 of 7. Be nice if in a big game we could play well and outta no where Mathieu or Morris or Joey drops 30 on somebody and we send them home muttering.

So you assume we're going to lose with 4 minutes left? I see how it is...

SS, you might have said this somewhere already, but if we win our home games, lose our road games and finish 8-10 (with a win over Wiscy), where do we stand on the bubble? I feel like our RPI wouldn't be too far off with those 3 more wins. Question probably would be if we have enough neutral/road wins to be in the conversation.

I'd say we'd have an RPI in the 58-62 range. That's probably not good enough. Would need at least 2 BTT wins.
