With the shakeup at Penn State and Ohio State there are going to be some major changes in the coaching landscape this off-season. Both PSU and OSU are going to target and land big name coaches for their programs. If either of those guys come from other BCS programs then the dominos will fall fast and furious.

Thankfully we shouldn't be players in this upheaval so we can just sit back and watch the drama unfold in terms of who is going where. I am expecting a ton of activity.

Any early speculation on who might end up in each spot? Have to figure Gruden's name will get tossed around a lot. Would also think it Peterson is ever going to consider leaving Boise one of those openings might be enough to entice him to move.

I still think Urban Meyer will be in the mix at both tOSU and tPSU...

PSU is not an attractive job, especially compared to OSU. First Penn State does not pay well or as much. Second State College is remote. You cann't get there easlily, and what is the attraction the rest of the year? A trip to Altoona, or Hershey? Attracting a coaching staff and their wives to Penn State will be tougher than you think. The top jobs are south of here. Texas, LSU, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, USC, heck even UCLA or Miami. Warm weather, a wealth of talent, and things to do. OSU would be in the top 5, but no other Big 10 school would attract a mega talent. And following a 'legend" at Penn State will be tough.

Of the current jobs that are open, Ole Miss is a better job than Penn State.

Husker you may be right or you may be wrong about just how attractive the PSU job will be. It hasn't been open in so long it is really tough to say what kind of names might be interested in it. For my part I think they will get a pretty big name simply because they are the only game in town, and will be motivated to make a big splash to keep their fan base energized and to try and move past this massive black eye as quickly as possible.

It may not be as attractive as some of those jobs you listed but it isn't all that far behind them and it is still a top position in the Big Ten conference at a place that draws 100K plus for all home games. Those jobs are not easy to come by.

Penn St was the second most profitable FB program in the country behind Tx. I think they can afford a big time coach if they want.

How much of that money will be earmarked for lawsuits coming out of this Sandusky scandal though?

The Penn State job is going to be really interesting. Enough money to get a big name, but who is going to want to be the "new sheriff in town" given what's happened and how long Paterno has been there?

But I agree it's going to be an interesting off-season.

The one thing you can guarantee with coaches is that there is someone out there that will want to be the guy to bring Penn State back from the place where it is right now. Whoever he is, he will take over a team with lots of talent and resources, pretty nice situation to walk into even with everything that is going on right now.

Penn State is the second/third best job in the B1G. This will make it a little tougher but still way ahead of most of the programs. Paterno was an icon but I can't help but think he might have held the program back a little the last few years even without the scandal. The scandal really makes it obvious he stayed on way to long. It will be interesting to see what happens. I would guess they will have to clean house completely. I would also guess they are going to look for an established coach and not a coordinator.

Don't disagree with either of you guys on the Penn State job. I think the downside is that whoever takes the job will be whipsawed by the increased scrutiny nationally and the inevitable comparisons to Paterno locally.

The right guy could do it though. Great program that may flatten out a bit over the next year or two, but should be able to rebound.

Another school I could see having an opening is Texas A&M. The move to the SEC and fertile Texas recruiting grounds makes that an enticing job for someone. It's believable that some of the wealthy alumn would want an upgrade over Mike Sherman going into the SEC.

Another interesting situation is what happens to Bradley at PSU. There is no way he stays when they clean house. He has the credentials to be a Head Coach but will he get an offer?

I don't know that anyone would touch Bradley as a head coach for next season. In a couple of years when the stench of what is going on in Happy Valley has died down I would think someone might consider him to lead their team.

I still think Urban Meyer will be in the mix at both tOSU and tPSU...

Urban Meyer has already moved to Dublin, Ohio last summer (suburb of Columbus), but I would not be surprised that Urban Meyer would not get back into coaching but could become an athletic director. I would bet that Smith at Ohio State gets fired after everything.

Third best? Besides Minnesota, what job is better than Penn State?

1. The Ohio State
2. Michigan
3. Michigan State
4. Nebraksa
5. Wisconsin
Shall I stop?

Kevin Sumlin looks brilliant for not taking the raise to come here or elsewhere for that matter, and sticking around for Casey Keenum's final year. Sumlin should get a job at a top 10-20 program.

Are you saying Michigan State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are better jobs than Penn State. Recruiting base and program support are much stronger for Penn State than any of these programs. Even Nebraska's support doesn't compare to Penn State. The numbers are so much greater, it's not only Pennsylvania, there are pockets all along the east coast where support is strong. The scandal will impact it some but the fan base loyalty is pretty good, my guess it will come together and might even increase in the long run.

The only 3 I would even consider ranking ahead of Penn State would be Ohio State, Michigan, and Nebraska. Wisconsin and Michigan State are attractive jobs but no way would they be more attractive then Penn State. If I was ranking them I would probably rank PSU #2 behind OSU with Nebraska and Michigan interchangeable but just slightly below.

Scandal not withstanding, replacing an icon like a "Joe Pa..." may prove to be a bit like a Bama replacing an icon like a "Bear..."

I've got to admit: when I hear about Alabama in football, my first thought is always about "Bear's Teams..." And that HAT...always that hound's tooth check hat that he used to wear...

Or John Wooden at UCLA, Vince Lombari at Green Bay, It even took a couple of years and a couple coaches at NC to transition from Dean Smith. How did go a Ohio State after Woody punched the Clemson kid? And add to that what will be the on going investigation, civil law suits, and possible criminal trials it will suck the life out the coverage out the program. It will be a recruiting nightmare. Can you imagine the negative recruiting that will go on. I would think Mark Emmert should consider allowing any current player the chance to transfer without sitting out if they choose.

I agree with jovs and MNVGUY. Penn State is probably the 3rd best job in the Big Ten and no lower than fourth depending on where one ranks Nebraska. Wisconsin and Michigan State are good jobs, but we are talking about Penn State here and its awesome reputation on the field for the past sixty years. People equate Paterno with Penn State's excellence, but Rip Engle was no slouch either winning more than two-thirds of his games there.

Statutory immunity will limit the exposure and the rest, if any, will be paid and defended by the insurance company. Jeff Anderson won't be lining p to represent the victims in this case. Even though he says it's about the kids, it's really about him and the 40 o/o contingency he collects when suing deep pocketed catholic dioceses. 40 0/0 of the exposure of a governmental entity won't be enough for him. They will have plenty of money for a coach.

Jeff Anderson is a great attorney, he could have made a lot of money doing any kind of law. He should be applauded for what he's done going after the Catholic church. He would have likely made a considerable more amount of money had he chosen to do something else, and he's brilliant, he could've.

To the main point, the only thing that might make it a tough job is the stigma around PSU right now. However, it's somewhere between the 2nd and 3r best job in the Big 10. I'd imagine that Penn St. will be willing to open up the checkbook and pay at a high level. They can certainly afford it.

Second, it is a recruiting hot bed.

This year, they have:
1 5 star;
10 4 stars;
30+ 3 star players in their state.

That's an immense amount of talent for a state that has 1 big time college football program and a couple other decent programs.

Penn state is a top ten job nationally:

In no particular order other than me thinking west to east:
USC
Texas
Oklahoma
Lsu
Alabama
Florida
Penn state
Ohio state
Michigan
Georgia

My list might be a little off. But those ten are all no worse than top 15-18 jobs.

Sports illustrated did a list this summer that had them ranked:
1) Texas
2) Ohio state
3) oklahoma
4) Florida
5) Georgia
6) LSU
7) Alabama
8) Penn state
9) Auburn
10) oregon
11) USC
12) Michigan
13) notre dame
14) florida state
15) Nebraska
16) Tennessee
17) Virginia tech
18) Arizona state
19) Arizona
20) Oklahoma state

I think 1-17 are pretty clearly the best 17 Jobs in the country and after that it's pretty subjective. But sports illustrated had Penn state number 8 on their list and indicated they thought there was a large gap between 8-9 on their list.

Ole Miss is a better job than Penn State.

Silly.

Care to make a friendly wager as to which school fills their position with the better/more attractive/more in-demand candidate?

Both lists seem very good to me. I really do expect them to go after someone well established with a strong track record to try and push this scandal to the back burner as quick as possible. Get a big name head coach and then clean house to make it very clear that the University wants nothing to do with any of the people involved in this scandal in any way.

It is a shame that Paterno's legacy will be forever damaged by this but there is no way with as tight knit as coaching staffs are that he didn't have a very good idea of what was going on. For Sandusky to do the things he allegedly did right in the football complex tells me he was not worried about being caught and felt confident he would be protected by the people in authority positions above his. Just a sad sick situation all the way around.

The fact that it happened is bad enough, the fact that it was swept under the rug by the people that could have done something to stop it makes it that much worse.

See copy and paste below...

1. AD, gone
2. President, gone
3. Sr. VP, gone
4. Iconic head football coach, gone.; red-haired assistant coach being sequestered in an unknown place
5. Federal grand jury indictments, with familiar names being subpoenaed
6. You now have the FBI (through the U.S. Dep't of Education) launching an investigation.
7. PSU launching an internal investigation to see who or what else could possibly have been involved
8. You will have criminal and civil trials coming up in which the Penn State name will be brought up countless times and will surely be carried on T.V. We will all continue to be reminded -- in excruciating detail -- of Penn State's 'secrets' in Happy Valley for years to come
9. Will take years to get thru just the legal part of it, with more names and facts sure to come out.
10. This will cost PSU tens of millions of $ to defend and settle.
11. Outside of maybe a couple of the BOT members there is no one who could possibly be talking real numbers for a contract with a big name.

PSU might get really lucky, but can't imagine a scenario in which a 'name' would even consider this toxic mess

Glen Mason!

Only half in jest.... Ohio State was #1 on his list and Penn State was #2
