The best part about visiting college towns? Seeing college sporting events.

The other best part about visiting college towns? Seeing what local breweries have to offer before and after college sporting events.

Behold The Athletic’s pint-sized guide to what’s on tap this fall and beyond: The top 21 (because 20 wasn’t quite enough) college towns based on local craft beer options. Our panel — college writers Brian Bennett, Scott Dochterman and Brian Hamilton — joined forces to celebrate achievements in sudsy refreshments and, hopefully, point you in the right direction on your next road trip.

For this exercise — which includes a First Four of near-miss play-in candidates — a “college town” is defined as a place where college sports are the biggest deal going. Beer meccas such as Portland and Chicago don’t qualify. And it’s Division I only, to keep it simple. If someone is brewing a world-class stout in a far-flung NAIA outpost, feel free to let us know.

We know you’ll debate the picks. But that’s the great part: You can explain how wrong we are in the comments, and that lets everyone know about other places to get good beer. It’s a win-win! So with that, get your fill of the best places to raise a glass …

Go Gophers!!

As far as beer goes...mass-produced domestics are everywhere. I'm covered.

Minnesota has a really good selection. Some breweries I like in the Twin Cities are
  • Bald Man Brewing - Their Honey Hush Kolsch is really good.
  • Indeed Brewing - Also a fan of their Mexican Honey Lager
  • Lake Monster - I've liked their Most Most Hazy IPA and Witbier
  • Surly Brewing - Big fan of the Furious IPA
  • Summit Brewing - For Summit I'm a big fan of their Oktoberfest and Winter Ales
  • LiftBridge - Mainly been a fan of their Farm Girl Saison

If we're talking about other college towns in Minnesota:
  • Bemidji - Bemidji has Bemijdi Brewing that makes some good stuff. They have a great winter IPA and right now a double hazy IPA.
  • Duluth - Technically not in Duluth itself, but just a ways north is Castle Danger by Two Harbors. I love their cream ale.
  • Mankato - Mankato Brewery has quite a variety. A really good one is their Spritz Golden Ale.
  • Moorhead - (Go Dragons) Junkyard Brewery has a good pilsner.

If Seattle qualified as a college town, I'm sure it'd be up there. TONS of local breweries in the Ballard and Fremont areas, and some in SODO as well.

Fulton is my favorite local brewery.

Without seeing the list, I'm sure Mpls, San Diego, Seattle, etc. all out-class these "college towns".

Can't mention Duluth without mentioning Fitger's -- the gold-standard for micro breweries.

I'd skip all the breweries in Iowa City and Ames and visit Toppling Goliath in Decorah IA.

My favorite in Minneapolis is Pryes Brewing. Indeed is one of my favorite breweries to visit because it is in close proximity to Popul Vuh/Centro my favorite tacos. :)

Schell's in New Ulm is the second or third oldest brewery in the country after Yuengling out east and one other that I forget that is disputed. Need to make the pilgrimage there someday.

Big fan of Bald Man Brewing, there's a five mile bike path along the Minnesota river from 35W to baldman that's my favorite summer circuit.
