"I'm one of the lucky ones," Motzko says of his battle with the coronavirus as he prepares to lead the Gophers men's team into 2020-21.

If anybody knows how serious the COVID-19 virus is, it’s Motzko.
Motzko thought he was being careful. He thought he was being smart. And then five weeks ago, he had a dull, nagging headache that gradually turned into flu-like symptoms that kept worsening.
“Usually when you have the flu, it’s 24 to 48 hours. This one just wouldn’t go away,” Motzko said during a conversation Tuesday afternoon with The Athletic.
So Motzko got tested for COVID-19, and sure enough, he was positive for a virus that to date has reportedly infected 11.4 million people in the United States.
“I didn’t get it here at the U. I didn’t get it running around,” Motzko said. “I got it being a parent just tracking around with one of my kids in his hockey world. And I was luckier than many … and I was not as lucky as many. We’re all expert epidemiologists now. So, I know from that standpoint where I was luckier than many. But it knocked the heck out of me for a couple of weeks, zaps your energy, flu-type symptoms.
