The Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC are expected to make a formal announcement about their alignment soon, perhaps as early as next week, multiple sources told The Athletic. It's not yet clear how specific the announcement will be because there are so many details to iron out, although administrators in all three leagues have stressed in recent conversations that issues of governance can and should be front and center.

Schools within the three conferences believe they are like-minded, that they want to continue to prioritize broad-based sports offerings and that the academic profile of their institutions matters — as does graduating athletes. For example, Big Ten schools sponsor an average of 24.8 sports per campus, with the ACC (23.8) and Pac-12 (22.9) not far behind. SEC schools offer an average of 19.9 sports.

So it seems not only is this a Football thing, but also a "we all have stakes in other sports and would like to keep them in the conversation as well" thing.

So far seems as much as that.

"We're teaming up with an understanding / agreement that we value these things and we want to work together to preserve them."

Now the door is open to communication about other things if / when they need to do it and don't have to sweat what the SEC does as much.

Good start.

Maybe they can double or triple-dip BTN/FSN, CBS, and another network. There must be other opportunities with streaming services. I am not too savvy on that. I don't know who the other media players are behind the scene that wants to monopolize pro and college sports.

On the athletics end, they will effectively stave off an SEC/ESPN monopoly. There must be many conferences worried about protecting their traditions too.

Can we finally get rid of NCAA and jettison the SEC and do our own Championships and stop giving so much away to a governing body with no real power other than over schools who cower to them...like MN.

NCAA is made up of the schools ... our school.

Not sure it changes that much...

It’d be a great time to have Diamond Jim at the helm. This not a shot at KW.

Honestly I think that is more ideological than anything else so ... no.

Those folks think Warren runs the B1G like a dictator or something ....
Wrong, KW has shown repeatedly he is not the man for the job. He should have resigned after his Covid debacle for damn near collapsing the B1G.

This is about the balance of power in major college football. The SEC and ESPN want to call the shots. With this new alliance, the 3 conferences have the collective clout to push back against the SEC as they negotiate the expanded playoffs and other topics.

Yep. I think these conferences are also seeing that if the SEC and ESPN have their way, football becomes the only sport that really is cared about, and that could mean it's harder to negotiate televising other sports that those conferences are more dominant in (basketball, volleyball, hockey, etc).

It's all about leverage.

Yeah some SEC schools have fewer athletic programs compared to others.

If you're facing folks willing to cut everything for football... gotta be concerned.

The Alliance would also effectively bring Notre Dame into it. Irish have a pretty stout schedule this year. FOX,CBS,NBC all have to be very interested. ESPN may have just F**ked itself.
