Has this been accomplished before? Feel like it hasn’t since Nebraska joined but maybe way back when.

Following up on that if you look for seasons where we beat Michigan as well you almost get all the national title seasons -- didn't play Michigan in 1904. Having just looked it up in 1938 gophers went 6-2 losing to jNW and Notre Dame (du Lac)

1934, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1960.
 




Showing we belong as a top team in the league by"

1.) Both of our coordinators demonstrate they belong as B1G 10 coordinators.
2.) our QB showing he is in teh top half of B1G QB's
3.) Our OL shows it can gel together and be a top half B1G OL.

I believe we have the potential talent to have a special year - but coaching, OL and QB play will determine it.
 



If we can throw the ball again and mix running and passing as we did much of last season. If we are throwing at 50%, we'll struggle to make a bowl.
 








Success today would be a bowl game and being competitive against everyone on our schedule considering we are breaking in a new QB with very little experience.

But to me, the definition of a successful season is always in flux because things change over the course of the year and expectations shift due to those changes....(injuries, teams being better or worse then expected.....).

So what looks like it would be a success in August might look very different in October.

True.

My old definition of success pre expansion was 7+ wins
My new definition is 5+ conference wins.

5-4 or better could seem a little disappointing due to circumstances but it will never be seen as a failure.
 

I feel like the team is talented enough to win 8+ regular season with just average QB play. Now if QB is below average, 8+ is probably going to be tough.

I'll say 8 regular season wins or more.
 

With this schedule, and a team that now should expect a moderately high baseline each season, 8 wins and up is a success. 7 is a meh. 6 or lower is a disappointment and result of something going wrong via injury or low QB output.

Above .500 in conference is a good baseline. 5 conference wins essentially guarantees a bowl game as well and a 7-8 win season at minimum.
 

People are way more confidant than I am, but they usually are this time of year.

I look across the team and I see a few standout players but so many positions where as a group ... I just dunno man.
 

8+ regular season wins. That would mean that we had a winning B1G season with a redshirt freshman QB and a new defensive coordinator. That would really raise expectations for the next two seasons.

I'm thinking the same. Fleck talked in 2019 about that being a season where the program turned the corner. Gophs have had a couple good seasons since, but I think that "corner" is still up ahead for Fleck and Co. This season on paper could be that season. If Drake pans out (I think he will), it should be.

The sad part is that so much hinges on one key position. But if Drake is competent (ie....not Kaliakmanis, Croft.....) the team has a shot to be solid. If Drake excels the bar goes up quite a ways but for a redshirt freshman getting first taste of action it is wise to temper expectations.

Since 2019 the team has only failed to reach .500 in conference one time (not counting abbreviated 2020) and that was the AK mess.

Scary putting faith in such a young QB but it's where we are at and the coaches didn't go out desperately searching for another option so hopefully that means they like what they are seeing from Drake and think he is ready to be the guy.
