The 2024-25 Gophers basketball season will be a success if?...

I do not think they have a decent shot at making the NCAA's unless they get some major luck, stay totally healthy, and at least 2-3 of their players really surprise. To me if they finish close to .500 in the B10 its a decent season, and I think they should find a new coach too.

Maybe I will be proven wrong, I hope so but I just don't see a ton of talent.

on paper, I think this team has enough talent to sneak into the NCAA tournament.

But - they have to stay healthy. when you have a borderline team, there is little or no margin for error. Cannot blow leads or give away winnable games.

assuming Frank Mitchell is OK, I want to see what the team looks like when F. Mitchell and Cochran are healthy.

(still waiting for someone to give a definitive report on F. Mitchell. Doogie on Skor North last week said the team was waiting for another evaluation, but it did not appear to be the type of injury that would keep him out for multiple months. still, that's Doogie - so he's only repeating what some 'source' told him.)

I will try to say it politically correct.

For me the season will be a success if at the end of it, we are confident in its direction going forward. If that's because CBJ has it figured out and we look like an actual threat great. If that's with a new coach that brings something new, also great.

The last thing I want is a well maybe we are ok we aren't sure. As the wise Yoda said "do or do not, there is no try".

6 Q1 wins
1-1 or 2-1 in BTN Tourney
NCAA selection-don't lay an egg in MM Tourney
Attract immediate impact transfers at needed positions
Commits from 2025 Jefferson, Bartlett, Seely or comparable
Commits from 2026 Wiggins or comparable
No NCAA violations/infractions

If they finish close to .500 in conf, they’d likely make the tourney. Unless becaus of early injuries we lose some of the easiest non conf games on record, then improve??

so if they finish 9-11 or 10-10 they will likely make the tourney with their Non Conference schedule? Seems unlikely to me, but maybe I am minsinformed.

Maybe? B1G doesn’t have any top 10 teams now, but 3 of the 4 teams added should be very solid: OR, USC, and esp UCLA. Probably no on Washington.

If this team wins 5 big ten games I’ll be shocked, so not really going to argue about the tourney.

If I were Coyle I’d get Fleck’s views on what kind of basketball coach can be successful here? Charisma, NIL, experience, etc. how to excite a solid local recruiting base!

I agree with this sentiment. The delusional viewpoints of "brick by brick", "doing it the right way", and "if we only locked down the border" should be clear to anybody now. The new free agency and NIL environment has changed the landscape dramatically. I'm hoping they don't finish the season with a mediocre 7 or 8 conference wins and then inevitably need to start over with 12 or so new players next year and it's good enough to give Johnson another year. Either take an NCAA step this year or give me hope under a new regime.

Do you still feel this way? Honest question.

I am less optimistic. After seeing some of the new guys play, they are not as talented as I had hoped. If/when Cochran is able to play, he will really have to be good to make a difference

But, the Gophs still have not had their entire roster healthy and available. So there is still a chance, but it's a really small chance.

I'm not sure the Gophers will win a single conference game this year. At the end of the year Ben will be gone and most of this roster and we'll be starting all over again.

And then it will be more of the same with the next coach. And that's a guarantee.

Gee, (sarcasm warning), I thought Ben Johnson was the problem, and simply changing coaches would make everything better.

are you telling me that there are issues with the program that go beyond Ben Johnson? that's not what I read on Gopher Hole.

Make the tournament! 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😅🥹😆

Oh boy, did I need a laugh this morning. Thanks OP

If it’s good enough to make the tourney
Or
Bad enough to get a fresh start

In the middle will just kill fan interest
