Tharpe a spring recruit?

true, but texas is no kansas, id be pretty hard to say no to the jhawks.

I think it he waits... we most likely will lose him (captain obvious..i know)

It Tubby can somehow convince him that he will flourish in Minnesota, perhaps we will get him. Something tells me we have a 25% chance of that happening. I do believe that if Tharpe signs early, its Minnesota or nobody.

I hope Tubby can put the press on and get him signed in November. I agree it seems like our chances go out the window if he waits til Spring.

Like Friend of Tubby says, how can having 25 mins of immediate playing time next year for a top tier frosh pg not be enticing?

Tubby probably wont commit minutes to any freshman no matter how highly ranked they are. If someone makes a terrible play they get yanked. If someone truely is not playing to their potential they have a lot of bench time to look forward to. That is just the way Tubby is. You won't be playing a bunch of minutes if you don't live up to his expectations.

Facts don't bear that out. Shea Seals (at Tulsa) played LOTS as frosh. Several frosh on 1997 Georgia team played key roles and lots of minutes, after 8 seniors graduated in 1996.

At UK, many frosh played LOTS - Tay Prince, Desmond Allison, Keith Bogans, Gerald Fitch, Jason Parker, Chuck Hayes, Rajon Rondo, Randolph Morris, Derrick Jasper, et al - and many of those started as frosh.

Brewster's coach says that Oklahoma has now offered Tharpe.

You can just tell this isn't going to end well for us. He is clearly waiting until the spring signing period so he can get the best possible offer which leads me to believe that the gophers are going to end up falling short. Now you have Kansas and Oklahoma entering the picture and we are in trouble.

We can't possibly know that he ultimately made his decision based on the influence of his Findlay Prep coach. In any case, I would guess that you'd agree that the longer he waits (and the more other offers come in), the worse the situation gets for us.

Cory Joseph was swayed by his Findlay Prep coach to pick Texas.

The Brewster coach is not Anti-Tubby like Coach Peck was/is.

It's pretty simple for Tubby at this point. He essentially has to tell Tharpe that he's our # 1 priority, but that we can't wait until Spring if we can find a viable second option, becasue we have to have a new starting point guard for next year. He has to take away the certainty of Minnesota being a fallback position for Tharpe or we will get used.

I do not know about how Tharpe is personally or what he is thinking, but we MN fans tend to down-talk our own school. As I am sure FOT will point out, Tubby got Devoe, Colton, Ralph, Royce, Trevor, Hollins, Mo Walker, etc. over some pretty legitimate schools, top tier schools.

I do not know how this will bode with Tharpe, but he seemed to really enjoy his visit and the area and the program. Add that to Tubby Smith and we do have as good of a chance as Kansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, or whoever.

Also, we talk about on here all of the recruits we've lost because we were "late" to showing interest in guys. We have shown earlier interest in Tharpe than any other school and are a very quality program. We still have a very good chance to get Tharpe even with these new schools interest.

I agree to an extent. While you are exactly right, we can't let Tharpe use us as a fall back, it's not a lie to tell him we can't wait. We most certainly can compete with any other school for any recruit.

And while I would LOVE to have Tharpe and think we could really really use him. I also do not want to lose out on Andre Hollins, Ogelsby, or Coleman because we are waiting on Tharpe.

FOT- The message that I read in CentralGopher's post was that Tubby would not give a recruit a gaurantee of minutes. Not that he wouldn't play anyone who follows the rules and will help the team win.

Dead on!

It isn't that Tubby would not play a freshman it is that he likely will be very straight forward with recruits and tell them minutes are earned. Any good coach will play a freshman if it will help the team. The difference with Tubby is that he is quick to yank a player after a mistake and if you are in his doghouse you won't see the floor much for a while. I don't think Tubby would ever tell a recruit to expect a certain amount of minutes. Most recruits may overlook this though but some may have enough foresight to realize that Tubby has little patience for mistakes.

No need to guarantee PG minutes. 25-30 are wide open NEXT year.

Again, Tubby plays freshmen even if they make mistakes. He yanks ANY player who continues making them, freshman or upperclassman.

I'd say he actually yanks any player who makes ONE mistake more often than he does waiting for them to make a number of them. The leash is so short on one defensive lapse, or a bad pass, that he immediately turns to the bench and puts someone in.

I honestly don't think I've seen a shorter leash in the country. Even Bobby Knight had his guys play through a turnover or bad shot. Don't get me wrong, Tubby has the track record of winning, but I his quick trigger bothers me.

It just creates too much apprehension to do anything out there. No wonder our guys just pass the ball around until the clock winds down; they're too afraid of making THE mistake that gets them yanked the next time down the floor.

+1 Well said.

SGL, CG, FoT

SGL, CG I agree with you completely about Tubby. I've heard exactly that from present and former players. However, the last thing we want is Tharpe reading stuff like this on a message board, especially under a thread with his name on it.

I agree. He has to get that point across but he also has to be very careful about the way he does it. If we rush him into a decision that he's already basically said he isn't ready to make, he might just say whatever since he has enough other legit offers.

If playing time really is his biggest concern (obviously in addition to playing for a solid program), he's best off coming here, but I would guess that top ranked players are "guaranteed" big minutes by most big time programs or else just assume they will get big minutes wherever they go.

I think we have as good of a shot as anyone right now (with the limited knowledge I have of his recruitment) and I agree with all of your points. However, the situation still inevitably gets worse as time goes by and more offers come in. It just gets to be more of a risk as time goes by (as we saw last year with Cory Joseph).

I've followed him for 13 years. He takes players out who CONSISTENTLY repeat mistakes.

If Tubby took players out immediately after they made one mistake, Lawrence Westbrook would have played a lot less than he did the last two years.

Tubby has always said he doesn't promise playing time to anyone, especially freshman. But anyone can look at the Gophers roster and see that there will be tons of minutes available to Tharpe or any PG that comes with this class. That's likely not true at Kansas, etc. Add that we should be a solid team and I'd like to think we have a good shot. But if he doesn't sign in November I think the chance goes out the window.

What is Josh Selby's status at Kansas this year? That could be a huge factor.

The players that Tubby yanks out of the game have competent backups who can take their place. Besides Devoe, there **probably** won't be a competent PG to back Tharpe up. Tubby won't keep Tharpe out of the game too long because he can't afford to keep him out.

Jerry Meyer is reporting that Kansas' number one point guard target is now Quinn Cook. That makes me a little more comfortable with our standing with Tharpe.
