Tharpe is telling everyone he will make his decision in the spring, do we wait? Do we have a plan B? We need a point guard in the worst way.

Kind of makes me nervous. We all know how the Cory situation ended. Not saying that this will end the same but I don't like seeing all our eggs in one basket, so to speak.

If I'm tubby and Nadir can't decide before the spring signing period than I am moving elsewhere if we get a commit before hand. We cannot have another CoJo debacle. And I believe that is exactly what Tubby will do.

+1

IMO Tubby is a good enough coach that he can successfully coach arround not having a standout true PG on the floor for a year or two. There is enough talent on the squad right now for him to make it work well with them.

No reason to wait on him, nor do we push him away because of his intent to wait. We should continue to look to fill the available scholarships. If still available in spring, by all means we keep recruiting him... but we shouldn't wait for him (he's not h.barnes or c.joseph).

If anything we do not fill a PG spot this year, and the allure of immediate playing time for a 2012 recruit would immensely help our chances in landing someone high profile who can contribute right away.

The basketball (Early Period) is November 10, 2010 till November 17, 2010. We play Siena on November 15, but the Puerto Rico tourney does not start for the Gophers till November 18 against Western Kentucky. Recruits might want to wait till the regular signing period to see how well we are playing and where they might fit in. If we finish near the top of the Big Ten then, like Walker this year it will lead to more recruits thinking Maroon and Gold.

Not PG recruit(s). Nolen graduates. He's the only "true" PG on the roster. 20-25 minutes of PT is available RIGHT AWAY to PG recruit(s).

I would think Tharpe's situation is closer to Darius Smith than Cory Joseph. Darius wasn't quite ready to commit, so Tubby took Justin Cobbs. Cory Joseph was a 5 star recruit and you have to leave a scholarship open for a kid with his resume.

That said, unless you buy that Oglesby can play pg, I am not aware of any PG recruits the staff is in serious contact with. I don't want to go in to the Spring without a PG signed, but I also don't want to take a kid with questionable talent just to fill a need. It is strange that Tharpe would choose to delay to the Spring unless he's got grade issues. He's not a Cory Jospeh type recruit that can feel confident that top programs will hold a spot for him. If he is looking for something "better" as some theorized, he could just as easily end up at Kent State as he could Kentucky.

BTW Darius Smith left UConn but I still haven't read where he transferred.

Recruting pg is going to be a problem for Tubby if he doesn't land one in the fall. If he goes into the spring signing period and misses, it could really hinder the success of the team in the next couple of years.

That is why he is the coach and gets paid the big bucs though, something will come through.

We've got to lock up one player here pretty soon. I would think that would put a little more pressure on the remaining recruits. With Coleman no longer visiting Iowa State, hopefully he gives a commitment soon. The perception of only 1 scholarship left has to be a bit of a motivator. I fully expect at least 3 players in this class though.

Like Friend of Tubby says, how can having 25 mins of immediate playing time next year for a top tier frosh pg not be enticing?

A true point guard is a must for any team and one of the most important players on the court. Yes a combo player can sometimes give you some minutes there. But if your pg is constantly scoring he's not getting the other players involved.

Is everyone writing off Maverick as a non-factor as our next PG? From everything I hear it doesn't sound like he will be a starter...

I think we really need Tharpe.

CSI. Southern Idaho (JUCO). Couple of other Chicago kids are playing out there.. including freshman Fabyon Harris... who had his brother, cousin and a friend all killed in Illinois over a short time period, I think within a few months of eachother... might be nice to get away from Chicago for a bit for Harris. Was heading to Houston (and SMU and Northern Colorado before that), but was released from his NLI about a month ago.

Gophers could sign him as JuCo recruit in 2011 class.

Chicago Tribune; "Basketball: Hyde Park grad Fabyon Harris arrested" -- Link at bottom

"
August 25, 2010|By Mike Helfgot | Special to the TribuneJust as he was set to begin his freshman year at Howard College, former Hyde Park basketball star Fabyon Harris was arrested earlier this week on a theft of property charge in Big Spring, Texas.

According to Lt. Irene Buchanan of the Howard County Sheriff's Office, Harris was among three Howard College basketball players charged with theft of property under $1,500.

She said all three have been released on $1,000 bond.
It's the latest in a tumultuous 2010 for the 19-year-old Harris, whose brother, cousin and friend were killed within weeks of one another in the spring.

Those tragedies convinced him to look outside of Chicago for college rather than accept a scholarship offer from DePaul.

He signed with the University of Houston in a dramatic ceremony in May, only to transfer to Howard after Houston agreed to release him from his scholarship last week.

Harris and the other two freshman charged were kicked off the team right when it happened... too bad to see that at Howard, it's a very good program...

The other player with some potential at PG is the punt returner. He is probably as gifted athletically as anyone.

Brewster Academy tweet:

"NTharpe10 hearing from a lot of schools lately. Many schools on campus today to meet with him, including Kansas, NC State, and Oklahoma."

Go Gophers!!

Per NBE

Tubby reportedly will be in Michigan tonight to meet with Trey McDonald. Huggy Bear was there earlier today, Marquette tomorrow... and tOSU and Wake checking out his workouts on Thursday.

KU just lost out on their top 2011 PG prospect, when Josiah (sp?) Turner committed to Arizona. Tharpe would appear to be a bit of a backup plan for Bill Self.

Just saw this on ESPN Rumors...

Naadir Tharpe on his visit: "Right now Minnesota is deff top of my list!!" Article will have more tonight.
