It's pretty clear that the standards for acceptable conduct from coaches have changed over the years, the rise and fall of Bob Knight is one example. Then you have a guy like Lou Campanelli, who was fired for generally being an "insulting tyrant" (quote from an article in '93) after the AD heard him berate his players in the locker room a couple times. I guess Gillispie hasn't learned from the past and he's heading down the same road as Knight and Campanelli. The types of tactics Gillispie uses went out of style over 20 years ago.

I remember seeing A&M - was at their regional, we actually talked about him back then. What a hot coach he was - but he was a god at A&M and being a football school, they could pay a lot with little pressure.

Yep, it definitely started then, Kentucky isn't for everyone, and honestly, it's not for many at all. Tubby probably got out just in time, you could see it breaking him down after a while too. It's amazing though, how quick it all came apart for him.
