New Coach Al Golden
He has totally turned around a Temple program that was one of the worst D1 programs just three years ago. Almost knocked off Penn State two weeks ago, but his RB got hurt.

Local Choice- Dale Lennon from Southern Illinois formerly of UND where he won a DII National tilte

You left out the best part about Golden:

He wears a tie.

The best part about him isn't that his name is Golden? Although I do really like the tie.

Like the resume. Seems like a legit up-and-comer. I've only seen a couple of Temple games but have never heard him speak.... is he down to earth, or is he a rah-rah guy?

Al Golden is lock for the Penn State job when Joe Pa retires...he ain't go anywhere until then.

I do not want another coach from the MAC conference, I'd rather keep Brewster in that case. I would rather pick an up and coming offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator from another Big Ten school aka Tom Bradley from Penn State but Bradley not Golden will be the lock for the Penn State job.

A head coach from a MAC school > NFL TE coach.

One has experience running a collegiate program, one does not. Al Golden is someone the Gophers should look hard and long at. Temple was on the verge of dropping out of division 1. They got kicked out of the Big East and were floundering. The fact anyone could turn that team around and make them respectable is something to take notice of. He would be a great choice. Get him now, pay him a lot, and you don't have to worry about Penn St.

Another coach from the MAC conference? Brewster came from the NFL, Mason came from the Big 12, Jim Wacker came from the SWC, Gutekunst came from within, Lou Holtz came from the SWC, Joe Salem came from the Big Sky..etc

Al Golden was an up and coming defensive coordinator at a BCS school. Then he got a head coaching job.

I think almost everybody would be happy with Al Golden at head coach. He's a hot name though, so we will be in fierce competition for his services if we decide to go that direction. And, as mentioned, there is a solid chance he will hold out for the Penn State job.

Al Golden is going to be on everybody's hit list when the season ends...my guess is that Maturi won't even give him an interview...just like Bo Pellini 4 years ago. *ugh* I have no confidence that the right decision will be made. I LOVE the choice though.

You mean like a DeWayne Walker a DC from UCLA who is stinking up New Mexico State?

Or how about Mike Locksley a OC from Illinois and the Rose Bowl now stinking up the University of New Mexico?

Seriously, both football programs have stunk, like Temple, and have sunk even lower. Much better off picking a HC in FBS football who at least has had success at some level instead of another hope and a prayer like Brewster.

I posted that I'd be all for Richt, but he isn't my only potential coach I'd approve of. Golden is high on that list as well. I think it is funny someone posted a link to an article about how Richt should be booted out of GA and the first candidate they mentioned to replace him was... Golden.

And, in terms of things that don't really matter, but would be funny: What would it sound like to have Golden lead the team out of the tunnel and have the TV announcer say "And here comes Golden's Golden Gophers!"??

Yeah, it'd really suck to get someone like:

Woody Hayes
Bo Schembechler
Ara Parseghian
Urban Meyer
Randy Walker
Terry Hoeppner
Brian Kelly
Gary Pinkel

Yes, any of those names would really, really suck for us.

+1 These coaches all started somewhere. Every coach in existence is a risk. A retread is no sure thing.

Any college football coach who wears a tie has enough fashion sense to restore our real uniforms. And that's probably reason enough to get hired around here.

Wearing a tie is a strike against a coach. Ties are for people who don't do anything. Coaches should have sweatshirts, a ballcap and a whistle.

How about some sporty glasses on top of the head, like Beulah Balbricker. And, she added a nifty stopwatch.

I like the old pics of coaches on the practice field in full pads with the players.

Uhh...when did we hire a MAC coach? Does Utah regret hiring a coach from Bowling Green? Does Cincinnati regret its last 3 hires? Does Northwestern regret its last Big Ten title under Randy Walker?

Took a disaster of a program in a metro area and has turned them around. They are getting better every year. Also has a defense background. From a distance really like this guy.

Not to nitpick, but Dantonio was never a head coach in the MAC. That said, there are a lot of impressive names on that list and many more that could be added.

I don't know enough about it, but given Golden's experience (and the fact that he wears a tie on the sidelines), he's edging up my list consistently.

Head coaching experience is probably going to be necessary for the next guy. Either that or coordinator level guy at a successful FBS school.

You're right, my mistake. I had it in my head, for some reason, that two straight coaches came from Central Michigan to Cincinnati. Turns out I was thinking of Brian Kelly, then Butch Jones, not Dantonio, then Brian Kelly.

If hockey and B-ball coaches can look decent on the bench, why can't a football coach?

Note the key word: BENCH. Hockey and basketball coaches spend their time on a bench. A football coach has to roam a much larger territory than do hockey or football coaches. A coach with a tie has to worry about keeping his clothes nice. I don't want a football coach spending even a moment thinking of his wardrobe on the football field.

And at work, when the people in the ties come over to "help" disaster follows. The necktie is probably the most absurd piece of clothing in history.

The way you make coaching mobility requirements sound, perhaps 40-time should should be a prerequisite for a coaching job. Or maybe shuttle run time, if stops and starts are your thing. And besides, most fields these days are some variety of artificial turf, thus it is no more difficult to keep your clothes clean on the field than it would be at the office. Every Saturday I roam a rather large tailgate lot (and do the cooking, mind you) while wearing a tie. I have yet to have any disasters. Let me guess, you are a jersey wearer, correct?

Back to the topic at hand, I think Golden would be a great hire and would support it fully.

That necktie sure never got in the way of the old school coaches like Lombardi, Bryant, Landry, Paterno, etc..

No, I don't wear a jersey. You should loosen that necktie, it cuts off bloodflow to the brain.

Why not lace and powdered wigs? Some great Americans used to wear those too.
