I know we are all going a little nuts about the HC search. Teague has certainly shut down the athletic dept tighter than a drum. Isn't this an improvement from the Maturi regime where every action was reported in the press and each declination felt like a stab in the back.

One thing for sure, the current administration hasn't given out any promises of a home run hire or any other stupid indications that John Wooden himself just might show up in the Twin Cities. That is certainly an improvement.

Heck I'm not sure we even know if they are going after a current Head Coach. I assume they are, but their history of identifying the really good assistants and putting them with AD's can't be forgotten. I assume the B1G is too much for an up and coming assistant, but who knows haw committed the current admin is to this process.

In the mean while, as my Momma used to tell me, "Patience Jack Ass, patience."

You can't judge an AD before you see how his hire has performed.

It's like the draft, the draft day grades mean nothing.

I think Mr. Teague has the guy he wants but is simply waiting for the right time to announce. It's going to take some preparation by the PR staff to spin this into the best hire in Gopher sports history even though obviously isn't (from what I can tell). They are probably practicing the answers to angry questions as we speak. When some assistant coach is going to be announced this week as the next head coach at the University of Minnesota, people are going to be outraged. They need some time to get ready for the fire. That's my opinion.

Our media is completely lost when it comes to college sports. All he needs to do is make a good solid hiring. He needs to hire a coach that will continue to win and occasionally make a nice run in the tournament. Our media is going to hate it but oh well.

But... But... The whole process is already a failure!!!! FIRE TEAGUE

If we had hired a hobbit from the Shire vs. Teague it would have been an improvement over Maturi.

Which is MORE that enough for most people. It's way to early to tell how Teague's tenure will end-up. Nobody should be calling for his firing and nobody should be sure that he's going to do a good job either.

But you're sort of stuck with giving him the benefit of the doubt, until at least things have panned out. The U hired him and most of us were happy when they did. Now that he's making his first hiring, it seems weird that people are already jumping ship one week into the process.

I get your drift, Bob, but the more I observe the reactions of fans (and people in general to a number of topics) the media really do have an effect on the perception of the program. We need a guy who can manage that, not with PR tricks, but success. If the media has never heard of the new coach, a distinct possibility with our hard working media group in the metro, he and the program will be fried immediately. The new guy needs the chance to not have to defend himself from Day One. "Solid hire" does not do that. "Homerun" does. Media can't dictate, but it can't be ignored, either.

They do, but only for a little bit. The casual fan might get excited for a little bit one way or the other depending on the splashiness of the hire. However, the only way to really have any impact is to win. People had no idea who Kill was and he's turned around some of the people because they like what has happened so far. Who cares what the initial reaction was?

That would be perfect if it was his first act as A.D. Many people "jumped ship" after the North Carolina cancellations. Others when he gave Tubby the extension and that was under Teague's watch not Maturi despite the overwhelming effort around here to re-write that history. Now couple those with how he may or may not have handled the negotiations with Flip and the dissatisfaction with Mr.Teague probably isn't something that's just a week old.

Teague has two things going for him. First and foremost he isn't Maturi. Though it's getting pretty funny how so many people can only defend him on that basis. The other? He's a basketball guy and other "basketball guys" will band together no matter what to defend "someone who get's it" over any and all objections. They'll nail any critic with cries of how they just don't "get it" or they've got to give the guy time to do his job. All the while making proclamations of how they "know" he will make the right decision based on_____ well, not anything that he's done but because he's a "basketball guy."

Don't know how he'll do as A.D. Won't know how this hire goes until a year from now anyway. Do know one thing though, there better be on-hell-of-a buyout number on whoever gets the job. One of the "basketball guys" has convinced me that it's a "must have".

Oh and for a guy who is known mainly as a fundraiser, who's bio at VCU features that skill and who mentioned it at his first news conference like to see some results in that area around here too.

Good points. I guess for me, I just think of the hiring and firing of coaches as the most important job. I'm glad he fired Tubby when he did, I'll give him some kudos there. The North Carolina thing was a non issue for me, it did seem to bother some people and I can see it.

I still think, if Kill is successful no one will care about North Carolina and if our basketball coach is successful, no one will remember this last week. It's about wins and that is what eventually makes or breaks you.

Isn't that the truth!

Folks take potshots at Maturi all the time, but I can't recall anyone on Gopherhole bagging on Maturi for hiring Tubby.
Not that I read every post, but I read most of them...
Was there a ton of hand wringing when Tubby was hired?

Shows how much people slobber over a big name.

Anyone who has met both NT and JM (as I have) can tell within 2 minutes that NT is a more genuine, thoughtful, and stand-up guy than his predecessor. Does that assure that Teague will be a smashing success? No, of course not.

But given the long, and frankly, embarrassing ~10-year tenure of JM, NT has a very low threshold to step over to qualify as an improvement.

I can't believe the premature freak-out factor going on in here, and in most media outlets.

With Tubby's record at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky nobody was upset with Maturi for the hiring. People were stunned and happy Smith was coming here. The kicker was while Maturi wasn't "hit" for the hire, he got no credit either. The consensus is that Tubby made the decision to come here himself. He "fell" into Maturi's lap.

Joel never did anything that resulted in praise from the Gopher Faithful.

What Woody needs to remember (and I think he is smart enough to realize this), is that success of the hire is what will matter for him in the long run. If he makes a hire who everyone hates because they don't like his resume, but then turns out to be the Barry Alvarez of Gopher Basketball, no one is going to remember or care that they hated the hire at the time. Conversely, if he gets Coach K here and Coach K doesn't win, no one is going to be praising the hire 6 years down the road (see Tubby, Maturi). Just like Coach Kill dealing with his critics, if you produce wins and successful postseason performance, perception will take care of itself.

Agreed at USC everyone out there hated Pete Carroll and he turned out okay for them

How can you possibly judge Teague before he's made his first major hire?

So would it be fair to say that one can neither accurately defend him at this point nor assail him for making a bad hire? Both a defense of Teague and a assault of Teague are judgments. So far, I think he has made one good move-(firing Tubby) and one serious error (blowing the Flip deal), but he can make up for it by hiring an excellent coach.

At this point we have no idea whether Teague is a genius or a putz. Meanwhile there are about 4 threads started this morning attempting to line up as Teague apologists.

Fired Tubby - actually happened. People can make their judgements.

'Blowing the Flip deal' - We don't really know what happened. Too early to judge.

Our football performance during his time here, our B1G and NCAA tournament performance in basketball during his time here, and one of the longer stretches without a tournament win in Gopher hockey history.

Nice list bleeds. Maturi can be blamed for a lot of things but not one of the things on your list. The ignorance about Gopher sports history in GopherHole knows no bounds.

I think nearly eveyrone was on board with teh hiring of Tubby Smith and couldn't believe that Kentucky fans would not want to keep a guy who wins 20+ games a year. Now 6 years later we understand why they grew tired of Tubby as well, there seems to be the potential for so much more but for one reason or another they just can't get to that next level.

Wait, I don't understand...Maturi made each of those coaching hires (Brewster, Tubby)...now I'm not saying he's soley to blame for those program failures, but he certainly is not without any blame.

Thanks for having my back DieHard. At the end of the day, responsibility needs to run uphill. The AD is responsible for running a successful Athletics Department. He needs to put the right people in the right jobs and give them the support to succeed. I agree with you that there are also other people who deserve some blame. The reason I don't push the responsibility up to the President is that his job is to run a successful University, not focus on the Athletics Department. I want an AD who says "the buck stops here".
