per Sid:

Teague, who came from Virginia Commonwealth to become Gophers AD in April of 2012, also was asked about the current status of the $190 million fundraising project to try and improve athletic facilities around campus.

“We’re finishing our fundraising feasibility study actually in the next 10 days, and things are looking good,” he said. “We’re always getting some gifts, we haven’t gone public with any of those. But we’ll make some more announcements in the coming months. Things have been very good. I’m excited about the prospects. People are responding and our feasibility study has been very positive.”

Go Gophers!!

What does a "feasability study" entail?

"Hello Sir, would you donate a couple million to the Gophers Practice facility? If you had it? Perfect"

Seriously? They didn't do a feasibility study before they announced that 190M number? We'll hear more in the coming months? What the hell have they been doing?

I think they did a feasibility study, but this is a fundraising feasibility study... I think that, but I'm still confused.

My guess is he was aiming high with the $190 million. Teague got the practice facility built for $10 million at VCU. I realize that won't get it done here, but no way do they need a $190 million facility. Nebraska spent $18 million on their basketball facility. Just get the damn basketball facility done first, and build around it down the road!

Prospecting, prospect grid, gift tabling, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship... It's a long process, people

I agree with getting the practice facility done immediately, but the "U" has been neglecting facilities for all sports (with the notable exception of TCF Bank Stadium) for decades. The need for a basketball practice facility is most glaring, but the "U" also needs to vastly upgrade its study/eating areas for all athletes, football practice facility, probably some nice athletic dorms...basically all the bells and whistles that other other schools have been adding on for years and years while the "U" was content to get passed up.

Teague may be aiming too high with the $190 million number, but I would guess his strategy of one big fundraising drive to bring Gopher Athletics out of the stone ages and in to the competitive realm of the B1G is seen as more likely to work than going after donors for ~20 million each year to piecemeal out competitive facilities.

Hopefully, we will hear some good news soon.

I agree the U has been ignoring some athletic training facility needs but the athletes already have the nicest dorms/student apartments. And the U just built a brand new 6 story 600 resident building that is top of the line. When I was an undergrad all the athletes ate at stanford hall which was the nicest out of all the UDS options and not really sure you could get much nicer although I'm sure they have either improved that option or the dining hall in the new residence hall is even better. I can't comment on the study areas for athletes because I never got to use them but you can't say the U doesn't have nice dining options or dorm options for athletes.

No, there is no new basketball practice facility at VCU. You were tricked.

The plan for a feasibility study was announced last summer at the Board meeting where the $190MM with no priorities plan was also announced.

Scary.

Need to completely change directions on this. Need some quick "wins" (ie, on bball & fball facility fundraising) to help make believers out of some... then pursue the grandiose stuff.

You're right. Not sure where I came up with that. They are reportedly "close" to their fundraising goal.

I couldn't agree more. You have to walk before you can run.

You're essentially correct. The initial feasibility study was designed to test the feasibility of the study, without which, any determination on the study of the feasibility of fundraising would not be feasible. What you want to remember here, is that this process was incubated during the Maturi years, and thus the process itself may not be, in fact, feasible. I think we're on the same page here, don't you agree?

I think Pitino correctly understood this as 'shut up and go shoot baskets in that empty room over there.'

You mean the "room of necessity" at the Hogwarts Beirmen building that Tubby and his staff couldn't find?

I thought it was because Maturi was using that room for '7th place in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup' trophies, but I could be wrong.

Maturi was fond of saying "there's room for growth in the University's Athletic Department". You don't suppose...?

It's amazing how important you think you are, considering how little in life you accomplish.

190m was for more than just the practice facility

I'm aware of this.

I guess I'm concerned that going for the whole ball of wax will kill the chances of getting the basketball facility done. They couldn't raise the $10-15 million needed before, so they decide to try for $190 million. I hope they know what they're doing.

Pretty sure they've got more facts, talked to more potential donors, and thought it through more than, oh, about 100% of us on GH.

Lol, funny stuff!

For such an "expert" on college basketball and college athletics, you rarely contribute anything meaningful to this website. I think most posters would prefer you permanently relocate to a Marquette message board.

Mulligan, you have made several posts today that seem to imply that the U is a brain trust of success and we are not that smart. Maybe you are not aware of the most recent 50 plus years here at the U where I would call them anything but smart and successful when it comes to managing our athletic department and facilities. Which is why we are considered to have the worst BB & FB facilities in the B1G even after building a new on campus stadium.

Now I am excited about Kill, Pitino and Teague and what I think they can accomplish. That doesn't mean I am going to stop questioning them beings they haven't done a damn thing yet nor am I going to forget that the last time we went to the Rose Bowl I had not yet been born and that officially, we have never been to a final four and that the best BB years of my lifetime don't officially count because we couldn't seem to manage our own program.

So no, I don't blindly trust these people and I and others have good reason not too.

I don't have a lot of trust for our athletic department's administration. This is the same group that gave out thousands of free hot dog coupons for a football game, and didn't realize that it might effect the number of hot dog orders enough to make it worth telling the people who provide and cook the hot dogs. Regardless of how big of a tragedy fans not getting hot dogs was, that simple lack of reasoning, foresight, and communication is just horrendous.
