Teague called out the media and message boards

Full Disclosure. I wanted Flip. I am certainly happy with Pitino given the circumstances, and I hope Saunders and the braintrust agreed to disagree. I think Flip's "I'll always bleed maroon and gold" is a good sign, and I hope he is still a friend of the program.

Agreed.

I don't think Teague ever offered Flip the job. It is certainly the antithesis of hiring Little Ricky. Hiring Flip would have given Flip the upper hand. Boosters have his back at every turn, local hero, etc. I'm guessing they talked to him, realized Flip wanted total control and said no thanks, that doesn't fit with our plan. Teague and Ellis want to mold the program. Hiring Flip would not have allowed that.

I don't blame them one bit, if that's how it went down.

LOVE the hire. Very un-Minnesotan move. LOVE IT!

JMHO.

+1

From Doogie:

• The real story will likely never come out, but multiple sources insist that Flip Saunders was never offered the Gophers job.

If so, I wonder if Katz will write an article about his false sources. No, of course he wouldn't.

So anyone interviewed = offered?

Uh yeah it does and that's not a bad thing. We are people so thin skinned about admitting it? UCLA was turned down too. Not sure if their fans are so worried about admitting it. Oh, and they DO have something to worry about with their new hire.

So, a headhunter calls me and asks me if I would like to interview for a particular job. Does that mean I have a job offer? I don't think so.

So, you think that finding a Big Ten Basketball Head Coach a "one of 12 in the country" job is the same as finding a Sales Manager, Accountant or I.T. person? Does that mean that they're the same? I don't think so.

Still don't understand why it bothers people.

So you think that Pitino was at the top of there "We want this guy to Coach the Gophers" list and do you think that Billy Donovan was lying whenhe said he wasn't contacted until Monday.

Better question why are you so worried about it?

Yep. It's been my opinion for a long time that 90% of the Twin Cities media couldn't name 5 players on the Gopher football team without looking it up.

90% might be too kind.

Why would it be different? Anyone would want to interview the person before they hire them. Sounds like Teague set up shop in FL and was interviewing. Why would you not first figure out who, that you had interest in, was interested in the job and then set up interviews? I really doubt that anyone is just going to go down the list and call each person sequentially and ask them if they want the job. For example, we don't even know if Teague felt that Smart would be a good fit here. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Would Smart be a good fit here, right now? I don't know.

Doesn't bother me at all. Just weird that people like to jump to conclusions without any supporting evidence, at all.

A few people's concerns notwithstanding, Flip was the more sure thing. This is far more speculative, but I absolutely love the hire anyways. As I've posted elsewhere, the root risk was firing Tubby, and any hire you make after that is an inherent risk in its own right but unavoidable. At the end of the day, the biggest risk is if you don't hire the person available who you think is the best for the job.

No, he had a pool of candidates, some realistic, some not. In order to narrow it down you call them and see if they're interested and to get a feel for how they'd fit. Sort of like a pre-interview. I don't count people who said no at this point in the process. I think we probably only got past that point with Flip and possibly Shaka before coming to Pitino.

I love the V. Points for original moniker.

You're responding to something that isn't related to my post. I don't think Pitino was at the top, but like you, I don't have a problem with that. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was worried about anything.

Now, back to what I actually posted about. This was the original question: "If you ask someone if they want to be considered for the post and they say no, and get an extension where they are, does that mean they were offer and refused?" You said yes, but the correct answer is no. Contacting someone about a position is not the same as offering the position. That doesn't mean that I'm saying other coaches weren't offered before Pitino.

So you think that Pitino was at the top of there "We want this guy to Coach the Gophers" list and do you think that Billy Donovan was lying whenhe said he wasn't contacted until Monday.
