per Axios Sports:

North Carolina lost to Virginia, 68-59, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.

Why it matters: The Tar Heels are set to become the first preseason AP No. 1 in the modern era (1985-present) to miss the men's NCAA Tournament.

  • Last season: National title game appearance, ended Mike Krzyzewski's career.
  • This season, despite returning four starters from that team: Unranked, swept by Duke.
For context … The last preseason No. 1 team to miss the tourney was NC State in 1975. But there were just 32 teams back then. Surely, the 1974-75 Wolfpack (22-6, No. 7 in the final AP poll) would have qualified in 2023, when 68 teams get in.

Go Gophers!!

The negative powers of Luke Nance...🤔😏

Can only imagine the level of meltdown going on over there. I mean our year has sucked but going from National title aspirations to not even making the tournament would be insanely disappointing.

So Pete Nance sticks it out at Northwestern for 4 years and then transfers to UNC, seemingly to increase his ability to go far in the tournament. Now UNC might miss the tourney completely and Northwestern finishes 2nd in the B1G. Nevermind the fact that he could have stayed at NU to get a masters degree from a relatively prestigious institution, instead going to a place that hands out degrees like candy at Halloween. Transfer portal cautionary tale.

UNC is ranked #29 among national universities by US News. Not as high as Northwestern (#10) but hardly horse meat.

they should be on probation and lose scholarships for the next 50 years for their academic cheating, and the university should have lost their accreditation. Rotten program. I love seeing few other teams lose more than them.

To clarify, Northwestern is a highly ranked academic institution, not a “relatively prestigious” institution. As for NC, I think the NCAA will get them in. Can’t leave the corrupt big boys out!
