Tamani Carter switches to Michigan

Now I'm really starting to dislike Brady Hoke.....

Does the Free Press always cover recruiting that thoroughly or is it just because he is Hoke's 1st?

Yeah, SS was on point. I hate it when rumors are true....

Hard to beat Michigan in Ohio. Could never figure out why Carter had taken so long to commit anyway. Was happy to have him, but something did not seem completely straight.

Too bad. This kid has some talent and would have helped here.

I think this is a good sign for the program. I can't ever recall a time we lost a player to scUM based on playing time and fear of being buried on a MN depth chart!!

BTW--Nice recruiting effort Hoke-creative use of fishing on a conference teams commits. Payback will be a...., well, you know. Enjoy your porous D, the rest of the Big Ten will (side note-a frosh DB will not help)!!!

If you read Chris's interview with him just a two weeks ago, it seemed that playing time right away was the most important thing to him. I guess he'll probably get that chance in Michigan as well since their defense is terrible.

Yeah, basically all that lines up with Michigan as well, except it's a higher profile school as well. That sucks, but I can't really blame the kid, he's from Ohio and we know how that is.

He always wanted to go to Michigan it sounds like. He was never offered by the old Michigan staff and location was a major factor. I think he was more than happy with Minnesota, but Michigan was his original favorite to start with.

so a total of 12 days after he commited to us he switches. What a dbag. We don't need morons like that anyway. Indecisive little prick. So what, does he switch his commitment everytime he takes an official visit or something? If he committed to us already then why would he visit Michigan(assuming that is what he did)? Seems pretty common sense that if you really aren't that thrilled with a school you shouldn't commit to it.

What Goes Around....

comes around! Hopefully, Kill & Co. can pay Hoke back soon!

This seems like a tad much. The kid wasn't offered by Michigan when he committed to us, so at the time, we were his #1. When Michigan went forward with an offer, that changes things. I really don't fault the kid at all for that. I wouldn't say he wasn't thrilled with Minnesota, but when one of his original first options throws a late offer at him, he probably owes it to himself to go with it. I'm not even sure he visited them.

tate forcier???

The kid has some talent, but.....

It's rather comical to watch the reactions of the fantasy recruiting fans as a...

"verbal recruit" plays the little "I'm totally committed until a nicer offer comes along..." game. How can you people get so upset and hateful regarding this fantasy recruiing stuff. NEVER count on anything regarding a kid who is still in high school. Why get angry with the kid? You can kick yourself for being so emotionally involved with a fantasy high school recruit. Hate yourself for being that possessive of some kid who is being courted by recruiters who will simply move on along to the next fantasy recruit when they get stiffed by one they made an offer to whe verbally accepts their offer and then finds a prettier one to "dance with..."

Never count on anything until the kid is playing his final year for the program.

You super reactive people are pretty funny with your love/hate relationships with these fantasy recruits.

That's quite a bit of speculation. What makes you so sure that's why he switched his commitment?

Actually I am kind of glad he switched. If he committed at the first offer he had even though it wasn't where he really wanted to go then he must not think he is that good anyway and probably wouldn't have played much for us anyway. Seems like he was desperate for an offer to start.

Who said he committed to the first offer he got? He had a bunch of offers and choose MN because it was the best situation at the time. Michigan had not offered at that point but did now, so things changed for him. I don't think it was indicated anywhere that he never wanted to come to MN. He probably did, just wanted to go to Michigan even more.

It's a loss, but there is a kid from Texas (Carrington) that I'm wondering whether or not he is now visiting this weekend (his name is being kicked around on the GI message board subject lines) and he has some decent offers (Baylor, Houston, Kansas, and then a bunch of other smaller schools).

I liked Carter's film a lot (not impressed with his own, personal web site) and was excited when he committed, but maybe we'll get someone else just as good who is "all-in" with the U of MN. There are still a lot of good players out there considering us - the linebacker from Florida, Frank Clark, Sankey (I'm guessing Washington for him, however), and others keep popping up. We'll be fine.

Looking around at some Michigan reaction, seems like they see him as simply a "depth" commit, someone who will redshirt, get some special teams play in, and maybe eventually crack into the lineup. Definitely they aren't expecting him to play immediately, that's for sure. They also have a couple of highly regarded DBs coming in for visits next week, so I don't know. I'm guessing the kid just simply wants to play at Michigan.

Academics could play a role as well. He might have always wanted to go there, but just needed an offer. He has a Stanford offer as well.

Why is there even such a thing as a verbal commitment? Seems to mean nothing to some of these kids, and also throw in some opposing coaches.

It's part of the deal when dealing with high school kids. They're flighty, they change their minds at the drop of the hat. You're certainly free to change your mind, but the way kids sometimes seem to jerk coaches around really bugs me. If I was in their position when I was 17/18 and I made a commitment, I know for a fact my old man would have made me stick to it. Didn't matter if the program I was committed to had fired their staff midseason and brought in Satan himself to take over with Kim Jong Il and Dane Cook as coordinators, I would have had to see it through.
