Tally of Starters Opting Out

But I am still “traumatized” by his bowl game collapses against Texas Tech and North Carolina State. (Please don’t bring up Michigan….)
Maybe we would have been spared the Brewster Experiment if the TT kicker missed that 52-yard FG at the end of regulation.

It was discussed that some playoff players might be able to go into the portal and still play for their team as long as they stay committed to their squad until the playoffs are done. Seems like it would be a really strange situation but I guess it may be happening in some cases.

There were a number of players from a team (Florida, I think) who played for them in their bowl game a year or two ago despite being in the transfer portal. The announcers mentioned it a number of times during the game.

Oregon, build dude. Remember that Oregon walk-off win, Build. Mase was also the best damn Gopher coach to have to coach in that damn dome and to even have to recruit to that soviet designed piece of crap when it wasn’t booked for monster truck events or tractor pulls…

Mase is one of the best coaches to coach at the university since they fired Murray Warmath and Cal Stoll, and don’t you ever forget it!

Take that Build!!!! ;0)
To use your words against you only big ten wins matter and in 2.5 less years PJ already passed Mason in that regard

Thank you for paying attention re: Big Ten wins. However, Build’s post ONLY mentioned bowl games.

Also, PJ never had to coach in that damn dome OR recruit to the humpty DUMP stadium.

Don’t jump to conclusions: The Only thing about coaches I said was that Mase was one of the best Gopher coaches in Football SINCE they fired Murray warmath and Cal stoll. That was a long time ago and a whole bunch of football ago!

I have become a big damn fan of both Mase AND PJi

they have had different advantages and disadvantages during their tenures. Both the right coach for their specific period period of time.

DB Mansoor Delane is arguably their biggest loss too, star CB for them.

Build’s post ONLY talked about bowl games. PJ has a pretty nice run as a B1G coach. I’m a BIG fan of PJ as a B1G. football coach!!!

But Build was only talking about bowl game. Back in Mason’s days no team EVER got a bowl game with less than 6 wins. ;0)

Has Minnesota ever had a starter enter the Portal? Before or after the bowl game?

AK was the '23 starter but probably wasn't going to be in '24. Bucky Irving started some games due to injuries but also was going to be RB2 in '22. Beanie Bishop was looking like a nickel or dime back for his last season before going to WVU and being an All-American.

Having a hard time thinking of anyone who was starting, projected to start the next season, and just left for another school.

Michael "Flip" Dixon?

According the the Virginia Tech poster who has shown up here I believe Drones is not playing.

Unless something changed and I missed it Brosmer has said he is playing for us. Someone mentioned in another thread that Jackson indicated he might not play in the bowl. I would expect most of the guys listed for us to play with the exception of Ersery most likely due to getting injured in the last game and not wanting to hurt his draft stock.

Trill Carter perhaps?

No worries as Mase being hired is why I became a Gopher. He was Georgia's HC for a week and if he was good enough for UGA, then I had something to respect at that time for UMN. Most important, hiring Mase told me the Administration (Yudof) was not only aware...but was ready to wake...the sleeping giant.

So, yes Walrus I take a shot at Mase now and then but mostly in disappointment. I still believe that if David Gibbs had stayed as DC, holding the offense and special teams constant, we would have been a hell of a football team with a little recruiting luck. He holds a special spot in my Gophers coaching tree.

Overall the portal has been a positive for us in terms of what we have gained vs. what we have lost.

We have definitely lost some guys that could have helped us if they had stayed, Bucky Irving probably being the biggest name but others like Bishop, Oliver, Dixon could have been solid parts of the rotation the following season if they had stuck around.

Mason rescued the program from the dumpster fire it had become. He will always hold a special place in Gopher football history for that. Unfortunately he could never shake the Ohio State thing and when they turned him down he lost his fire.

But he got to three of his seven bowl games with 3-5 Big Ten records which means non-conference wins are pretty important too.

Brosmer has said he's going to play. I'd add Jackson and Spencer to the potential opt outs.

Mase made us respectable, he was the coach of my childhood. My first memories of gopher football are the Wacker years where we would play Ohio State and struggle to get past the 50 yard line, so Mason made me realize we could actually go to bowl games and compete

I have lived through Murray Warmath, Cal Stoll, Joe Salem, Lou Holtz, John Gutekuhnst, Jim Wacker, Glen Mason, Tim Brewster, Jerry Kill, Tracy Claeys, and P.J. Fleck. 11 different football coaches!

The best of these is P.J. Fleck.

And hopefully the most supported.

I wish I had a crystal ball. I understand opt outs but they bug me and I hate to see them. Fleck has had a long history of not announcing injuries during the season or opt outs for bowls. So in some cases we don't find out until the very last minute. I think JMS opted out during pregame warm ups upon seeing the ridiculous baseball field turf.

So for as much as I'd like to make one visit here and feel confident I know who won't be playing in the Mayo Bowl, I suspect I actually won't really know until an hour or two before kickoff - unfortunately.

The JMS situation was a little bit of a surprise but for the most part we know who is opting out well before the game unless it is for injury reasons that came up during bowl prep.

I don't like the opt outs either but it has become a common practice. My personal feeling is that you should play in the bowl game if you are part of the team but I get why guys choose to sit them out.

I would be absolutely shocked if Max doesn’t play….. he just seems to have bought into the PJ culture and I don’t see him sitting out of the last game he’s going to play as a Gopher.

I'm guessing NIL contracts will start adding clauses that players must play in the bowl game to receive full funding. Maybe they already do. These guys are professionals now after all. If you get paid to play, then you play.

Also keeping in mind he's never had a bowl game experience since he was FCS. Hopeful he plays!
Didn't he travel and oberve last year's? Still, very different as a starter and much better location this year.

I'm confused as to why people are still acting like they are not sure if Brosmer is going to play. He already said back near the end of November that he is planning to play in the bowl game so unless he comes out and says he changed his mind the safe assumption would be that he is going to play.

True but there were also less bowl games and I'm sure PJ would love to trade an extra game vs a big ten East power for a game against Murrey State or Louisiana Monroe to pad his record like Mason could. Mason bowl record was fine, the three wins were all very fun, 1999 loss was a good game. We don't need to talk the other loses haha

So strongsazz: I see you just joined this board a few days ago. You weren’t one of those posters who was so fed up we PJ after the first four games this 2024 season that you were done with Gopher because of the coaching…the offensive coordnation situation and so forth and so on? Hope those dudes who said they couldn’t take it any longer are doing ok today. Pj got the team back to the middle of the pack by the end of the season without their presence and/or strong support.

Damn, man, it was just the other day that the Saban character was ranting about some team from some power conference some where in the damn south eastern part of the country needing to schedule softer because they were left out of the championship field as a result of 3 losses in their damn directionally named conference located somewhere down south. This Saban
fellow seemed to think that their coach would need to schedule softer in the future.

Maybe PJ should heed that Saban fellows warning and advice.

Personally, I have long advocated no non-conference games for ALL B1G coaches! Now, that would have kept Mase and even PJ honest and above criticism for the teams their athletic directors scheduled them to play!

;0)
